Arterial stiffness has emerged as an independent predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, objectively monitored steps per day is widely perceived to be beneficial for controlling health risk factors, and for preventing morbidity and mortality. The aim of this review was to determine the relationship between steps per day and arterial stiffness, as measured by its reference standard, pulse wave velocity (PWv).

Studies have evidenced more severe health consequences in individuals who smoked crack cocaine as compared to intranasal cocaine users. Differential neurocognitive deficits between the crack and intranasal cocaine-addicted patients, associated with prefrontal cortex functions, have never been tested using complex cognitive tasks in humans. In this study, we examined possible distinct neurocognitive deficits in 43 crack-addicted patients (CrD) compared with 36 intranasal cocaine-addicted patients (CD) and 32 controls.

Background Chronic deposits of advanced glycation end products produced by enzymatic glycation have been suggested as predictors of atherosclerotic-related disorders. This study aimed to estimate the relationship between advanced glycation end products indicated by skin autofluorescence levels and the risk of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality based on data from observational studies. Methods and Results We systematically searched Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the Web of Science databases from their inceptions until November 2017 for observational studies addressing the association of advanced glycation end products by skin autofluorescence levels with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.

Background: Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have been extensively exploited in gene therapy approaches as vectors for intracellular delivery of bioactive molecules. The ability of CPPs to be internalized into cells and their capacity to complex nucleic acids depend on their molecular structure, both primary and secondary, namely regarding hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity. CPP acylation has been used as a strategy to improve this structural feature.

Devic's disease or neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an autoimmune, inflammatory and demyelinating pathology of the central nervous system that affects the optic nerve and the spinal cord. Diagnosis confirmed by imaging, magnetic resonance (MR) and the presence of the anti-aquaporin 4 antibody (anti-AQP4). We describe two cases of patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and Devic's disease, who had anti-AQP4 positive and areas with neuroaxis MR abnormalities, showing this rare association.

Background: Cardiac autonomic dysfunction as assessed by I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (I-mIBG) scintigraphy is associated with poor prognosis in heart failure (HF) patients. Although cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has emerged as an effective therapy in improving outcomes on HF patients, its effect on cardiac sympathetic nervous function is still not fully understood. We aimed to study the value of pre-implantation I-mIBG late heart-to-mediastinum ratio (HMR) as a predictor of response and outcomes after CRT and to correlate modification in this parameter with CRT response and functional improvement.

Over the last years, heavy ethanol consumption by teenagers/younger adults has increased considerably among females. However, few studies have addressed the long-term impact on brain structures' morphology and function of chronic exposure to high ethanol doses from adolescence to adulthood in females. In line with this idea, in the current study we investigated whether heavy chronic ethanol exposure during adolescence to adulthood may induce motor impairments and morphological and cellular alterations in the cerebellum of female rats.
