Background: Physical fitness has been considered an important health indicator. Several factors can impact the increase in physical fitness in children and adolescents, including chronological age, sex and BMI, in addition to training variables such as weekly frequency, session and intervention duration, and types of exercises performed. To know the importance of variables that can impact physical fitness, it is important for health professionals to identify the most efficient way of prescribing physical exercises for children and adolescents.

Imaging is critical to HCC management, including surveillance, diagnosis, staging, and treatment response assessment, which requires it be performed consistently at a high level. The Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) was developed to standardize the acquisition, interpretation, and reporting of liver imaging, but until now, has not addressed the essential component of exam quality and adequacy. In this manuscript, we discuss the concepts of quality and adequacy and their clinical significance in the setting of HCC diagnostic imaging and treatment response assessment.

Article Synopsis
  • Oliguria, a condition characterized by decreased urine output, may be misinterpreted as acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients post-surgery, despite being a potential adaptive response during surgery.
  • A study analyzing 1,476 patients revealed that 34.4% exhibited oliguria within the first 24 hours after surgery, with certain factors like vasopressor use and non-elective procedures linked to increased risk.
  • Although oliguria was associated with a higher rate of AKI development compared to non-oliguric patients, 87.6% of oliguric patients did not show kidney dysfunction based on serum creatinine levels, questioning the accuracy of oliguria as an indicator for AKI.

Fluid flow through fractured geological media is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by climate change, resource management, and energy exploration. Numerical models commonly employ fracture surface representations and aperture distribution models to simulate these processes. However, conventional statistical approaches often overlook the inherent spatial continuity and directionality within fracture data, impacting the accuracy of aperture geometry and subsequent flow simulations.

Introduction: Current disease-specific models for prevention of mental disorders are challenged by the overlap of psychopathology, biological mechanisms, and risk factors. Moreover, mental disorders usually begin during childhood or adolescence, when symptoms fluctuate and are highly non-specific.

Discussion: We propose a staging model that integrates three domains - psychopathology, functional impairment and risk factors-, in which prevention is defined as actions to avoid stage progression, irrespective of diagnosis.

Four novel triterpenoid saponins, 1,3,23-trihydroxy-olean-12-en-28-oic acid 28---glycopyranoside ester (), 1,3,23-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid 28---glycopyranoside ester (), 3---galloyl-1,23-dihydroxy-olean-12-en-28-oic acid 28---glycopyranoside ester () and 3---galloyl-1,23-dihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid 28---glycopyranoside ester () and two new pentacyclic triterpenoids, 3-----coumaroyl-1-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid () and 3-----coumaroyl-1-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (), together with six known compounds were isolated from the ethanolic extracts of leaves and stem bark. Their structures were established by HR-MS, 1D and 2D NMR and comparison with literature data. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of the leaves and stem bark extracts and fractions was evaluated using the micro broth dilution technique.

Background: The diagnosis of HIV infection can cause mental disorders or exacerbate existing symptoms because of the stigma, psychological stress, and need for the self-management of the illness. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in people with HIV and to identify the associated factors.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study.

Background: Multidrug-resistant bacteria in humans have prompted the search for alternative solutions derived from herbal medicines that can substitute antibiotics in livestock production. Thus, the goal of this study was to evaluate the phytogenic properties of Marrubium vulgare infusion (MVI) on weaned pigs. Thirty animals were randomly divided into five groups of six animals, each receiving a physiological solution, clenbuterol and the infusion extract at doses of 0.

Article Synopsis
  • The study emphasizes the importance of understanding human mobility in controlling the spread of diseases, particularly in Brazil, using a data-driven approach to identify potential key municipalities for early pathogen detection.
  • Researchers compiled extensive intercity mobility data and utilized a graph-based model to rank cities based on their suitability as sentinel sites for tracking disease transmission.
  • The findings revealed that a small number of cities could effectively cover the majority of the national mobility patterns, highlighting a strategic framework for enhancing surveillance and response to infectious diseases based on transportation networks.

Introduction: Samples classified as indeterminate correspond to 10-20% of cytologies obtained by fine needle biopsy of thyroid nodules, preventing an adequate distinction between benign and malignant lesions and leading to diagnostic thyroidectomies that often prove unnecessary, as most cases are benign. Furthermore, although the vast majority of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) have such a good prognosis that active surveillance is permitted as an initial therapeutic option, relapses are not rare, and a non-negligible number of patients experience poor outcomes. MicroRNAs (miR) emerge as potential biomarkers capable of helping to define more precise management of patients in all these situations.

Purpose: To evaluate the prognostic value of C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin, CRP/albumin ratio (CAR), and modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) at different thresholds in patients with advanced cancer in palliative care.

Methods: Prospective cohort study with patients evaluated at a palliative care unit in Brazil between July 2016 and March 2020. We included patients ≥ 20 years old, both sexes, able to provide the necessary information or accompanied by someone able to do so, and Karnofsky Performance Status ≥ 30 %.

Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a prime choice to control the oral microbiota. However, it's a chemical agent leading to side effects such as teeth strains, taste disturbance, and desquamation of oral mucosa. Alternatively, the lactoferrin and oxygen-based Blue®M has been introduced as an alternative to the CHX, not disturbing tissue repair.

Background: Most cardiovascular (CV) events stem from modifiable risk factors, but it remains uncertain whether their impact on mortality has decreased in recent years as a result of treatment, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. We evaluated the temporal trends in the population attributable fraction (PAF) of modifiable risk factors to CV mortality in patients undergoing myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) for suspected coronary artery disease in a large city in Brazil.

Methods: The cohort comprised 25,127 patients without established CV disease undergoing MPI in a referral center in Curitiba, Brazil, from 2010 to 2018.

  • * Out of 190 participants, 43.1% reported consistent condom use, with serodiscordant individuals using condoms more consistently than seroconcordant individuals, but overall self-efficacy for condom use was similar across both groups.
  • * Results indicated that serodiscordant PLHIV who lacked guidance on HIV prevention and access to testing had significantly lower self-efficacy and were 11.5 times more likely to use condoms inconsistently
