Despite evidence that small bite closure is beneficial, it is not well documented how accurately and consistently surgeons employ this technique. We created a felt model to simulate fascial closure and educate residents regarding small bites. This study aims to gauge accuracy and consistency of bite size in fascial closure and assess if utilizing a templated model could improve technique.

Bacillus of Calmette and Guérin (BCG) and the risk of leprosy in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, 2016-2017.

Objectives: Paraguay has experienced a 35% reduction in the detected incidence of leprosy during the last ten years, as the vaccination coverage against tuberculosis (Bacillus of Calmette and Guérin [BCG] vaccine) reached ≥95% among infants. The objective of this case-control study was to evaluate the protective effect of BCG on the risk of leprosy.

Methods: We used a population-based case-control study of 20 leprosy confirmed cases reported among residents of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, diagnosed in 2016-2017.

Motivated by biotechnological prospects, there is increasing evidence that we may just be scraping the tip of the iceberg of poisonous marine invertebrates, among which the Polychaeta are promising candidates for bioprospecting. Here we show that an inconspicuous phyllodocid uses toxins in its uncanny feeding strategy. The worm, a jawless active predator characterised by its bright green colour, preys on larger invertebrates (including conspecifics) by extracting tissue portions with its powerful proboscis through suction.

Determining systemic mediators may help clarify the nature of inflammation in patients with ACO.

Objectives: We aimed at investigating the role and interaction of common markers of systemic inflammation (IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α), Th2-related markers (periostin, IL-5, and IL-13), and IL-17 in asthma, COPD, and ACO.

Risk assessment of pesticides in estuaries: a review addressing the persistence of an old problem in complex environments.

Estuaries, coastal lagoons and other transition ecosystems tend to become the ultimate reservoirs of pollutants transported by continental runoff, among which pesticides constitute the class of most concern. High amounts of dissolved and particulated organic matter greatly contribute to the accumulation of pesticides that eventually become trapped in sediments or find their way along food chains. Perhaps not so surprisingly, it is common to find elevated levels of pesticides in estuarine sediments decades after their embargo.

Thermal processing effects on the IgE-reactivity of cashew and pistachio.

Thermal processing can modify the structure and function of food proteins and may alter their allergenicity. This work aimed to elucidate the influence of moist thermal treatments on the IgE-reactivity of cashew and pistachio. IgE-western blot and IgE-ELISA were complemented by Skin Prick Testing (SPT) and mediator release assay to determine the IgE cross-linking capability of treated and untreated samples.

Liver and gonad histopathology, biometric parameters and hepatic metal bioaccumulation were assessed monthly over a one-year period in common soles from the Basque continental shelf, in order to determine baseline levels and confounding factors within biomonitoring studies. Biometric parameters and hepatic metal bioaccumulation varied according to season and gender. Accordingly, hepatic histopathological traits presented seasonal variations related to the reproductive cycle.

Development of histopathological indices in the digestive gland and gonad of mussels: integration with contamination levels and effects of confounding factors.

Bivalve histopathology has become an important tool in aquatic toxicology, having been implemented in many biomonitoring programmes worldwide. However, there are various gaps in the knowledge of many sentinel organisms and the interference of confounding factors. This work aimed (i) to develop a detailed semi-quantitative histopathological index of the digestive gland and gonad of the Mytilus galloprovincialis mussel collected from five sites contaminated with distinct patterns of organic and inorganic toxicants along the Basque coast (SE Bay of Biscay) and (ii) to investigate whether seasonal variability and parasitosis act as confounding factors.

Histopathological indices in sole (Solea solea) and hake (Merluccius merluccius) for implementation of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive along the Basque continental shelf (SE Bay of Biscay).

Sole and hake, together with sediments, were collected during two campaigns along the Basque continental shelf to study the utility of two existing histopathological indices for assessing the biological effects of contaminants to implement the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Hepatic and gonadal histopathology were measured, and metal and/or organic contaminants were determined in both liver and sediments. Sediments from the Basque continental shelf were found to be moderately impacted by metals but non-impacted by organic compounds.

In vitro studies of water-stable cationic carbosilane dendrimers as delivery vehicles for gene therapy against HIV and hepatocarcinoma.

Here we present a synthetic procedure for water-stable carbosilane dendrimers containing ammonium groups at the periphery of type Gn-{[Si(CH2)3N+(Me)(Et)CH2CH2N+Me3]x (CF3SO3 -)y} which have been used as non-viral vectors for transfecting different types of nucleic acids against two different medical problems, HIV and hepatocarcinoma. These systems have shown to be non-toxic in both PBMC and HepG2 cell lines under the experimental conditions and are able to form nanoconjugates with nucleic acids perfectly stable over time and in a wide range of pH values, which leads to the conclusion that the interaction between dendrimer and nucleic acid is very strong. In addition, a high degree of transfection using these nanoconjugates has been observed, ranging from 70-90% depending on the generation and in the particular case of PBMC transfection with anti-HIV oligonucleotides.

Molecular characterization of familial hypercholesterolemia in Spain.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), characterized by isolated elevation of plasmatic low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and premature coronary heart disease (CHD), is associated with mutations in three major genes: LDL receptor (LDLR), apolipoprotein B (APOB) and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9). We have analyzed 5430 Spanish index cases and 2223 relatives since 2004 with LIPOchip(®) genetic diagnostic platform, a microarray for the detection of Spanish common mutations in these three genes, including copy number variation (CNV) in LDLR, followed by sequencing analysis of the coding regions of LDLR and exon 26 of APOB, when the result is negative. Samples were received from hospitals of all around Spain.

The discovery of Homo floresiensis on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia has also highlighted the possibilities of identifying new hominin species on islands in the region.

Pediatric HIV BioBank: a new role of the Spanish HIV BioBank in pediatric HIV research.

The vulnerability of children has long raised ethical concerns resulting in the lack of inclusion of children in research studies. This has impeded the development of relevant medical therapies specific for children. In response to these circumstances, international policies have begun to recognize the need to carry out research focused on children.

Water-stable ammonium-terminated carbosilane dendrimers as efficient antibacterial agents.

A new family of amine- and ammonium-terminated carbosilane dendrimers of the type Gn-[Si(CH2)3N(Et)CH2CH2NMe2]x and Gn-{[Si(CH2)(3)N+R(Et)CH2CH2N+RMe2]x(X-)y} (where n = 1, 2 and 3; R = H, X = Cl; R = Me, X = I) respectively has been synthesized by hydrosilylation of N,N-dimethyl-N'-allyl-N'-ethyl-ethylenediamine, [(CH2=CH-CH2)(Et)N(CH2)2NMe2] with the corresponding hydride-terminated dendrimers and subsequent quaternization with HCl or MeI. Quaternized dendrimers are soluble and stable in water or other protic solvents for long time periods. The antibacterial properties of the quaternary ammonium functionalized dendrimers have been evaluated showing that they act as potent biocides in which the multivalency along with the biopermeability of the carbosilane dendritic skeleton play an important role in the antibactericidal activity of these compounds.

The Spanish HIV BioBank: a model of cooperative HIV research.

Background: The collection of samples from HIV-infected patients is the beginning of the chain of translational research. To carry out quality research that could eventually end in a personalized treatment for HIV, it is essential to guarantee the availability, quality and traceability of samples, under a strict system of quality management.

Methods: The Spanish HIV BioBank was created with the objectives of processing, storing and providing distinct samples from HIV/AIDS patients, categorized according to strictly defined characteristics, free of charge to research projects.

Impaired apoptosis in lymphoblasts from Alzheimer's disease patients: cross-talk of Ca2+/calmodulin and ERK1/2 signaling pathways.

We have analyzed the intracellular signals that allow lymphoblasts from Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients to escape from serum deprivation-induced apoptosis. The following observations suggested that modulation of ERK1/2 activity by Ca(2+)/calmodulin (CaM) is involved in preventing apoptosis: (i) ERK1/2 activity seems to support lethality in control cells, as PD98059, the inhibitor of the activating MEK prevented cell death; (ii) control cells show a persistent and higher stimulation of ERK1/2 than that of AD cells in the absence of serum; (iii) CaM antagonists have no effects on control cells, but sensitize AD cells to death induced by serum withdrawal and increased ERK1/2 phosphorylation, and (iv) no apoptotic effects of CaM antagonists were observed in AD cells treated with PD98059. These results suggest the existence of an activation threshold of the ERK1/2 pathway setting by Ca(2+)/CaM-dependent mechanisms, which appears to be the critical factor controlling cell survival or death decision under trophic factor withdrawal.

When a funduscopic examination is the clue of maltreatment diagnostic.

Objective: : To report a case of unexpected shaken baby syndrome, the diagnosis of which was possible after an incidental funduscopic examination.

Methods: : Observational case report. An infant was to be sent back home with an apparent unprovoked seizure diagnosis when a funduscopic examination was made because of an incidental research study changing the diagnostic orientation.
