Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive therapeutic modality approved for clinical treatment of several types of cancer and non-oncological disorders. In PDT, a compound with photosensitising properties (photosensitiser, PS) is selectively accumulated in malignant tissues. The subsequent activation of the PS by visible light, preferentially in the red region of the visible spectrum (lambda>or=600 nm), where tissues are more permeable to light, generates reactive oxygen species, mainly singlet oxygen ((1)O(2)), responsible for cytotoxicity of neoplastic cells and tumour regression.

We study theoretically the electronic and transport properties of a diffusive superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junction in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We show that the field dependence of the critical current crosses over from the well-known Fraunhofer pattern in wide junctions to a monotonic decay when the width of the normal wire is smaller than the magnetic length xi(H)=square root Phi(0)/H, where H is the magnetic field and Phi(0) the flux quantum. We demonstrate that this behavior is a direct consequence of the magnetic vortex structure appearing in the normal region and predict how this structure is manifested in the local density of states.

The degree of variability of the interferon sensitivity determining region (ISDR) in the hepatitis C virus (HCV) genome has been postulated to predict the response to interferon therapy, mainly in patients infected with subtype 1b, although this prediction has been the subject of a long controversy. This prediction has been tested by analyzing a cohort of 67 Spanish patients infected with HCV genotype 1, 23 of which were infected with subtype 1a and 44 with subtype 1b. A sample previous to therapy with alpha-interferon plus ribavirin was obtained and several clones (between 25 and 96) including the ISDR were sequenced from each patient.

The envelope 2 protein of hepatitis C virus (HCV) presents three hypervariable regions, named HVR1, HVR2 and HVR3, in which the presence of antigenic sites has been described. Genetic variability in these regions may reflect the generation of escape mutants as a consequence of the immune response. Therefore, these regions would tend to accumulate amino acid changes along the infection process, an effect that could be accelerated by antiviral treatments.

Bone marrow-derived stem/progenitor cells have been shown by independent investigators to give rise to neural-like cells (neurons and glia) both in vitro and in vivo. The objective of the present study was to determine whether nestin-enriched cells derived from bone marrow can differentiate into cells with the same morphological and functional characteristics as neurons derived from adult brain neurogenic zones. Cell culture methods were used for generation of adult bone marrow and brain stem/progenitor cells and for studying their differentiation into neural-like cells.

We present a measurement of the mass of the top quark from proton-antiproton collisions recorded at the CDF experiment in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron. We analyze events from the single lepton plus jets final state (tt-->W(+)bW(-)b-->lnubqq'b). The top-quark mass is extracted using a direct calculation of the probability density that each event corresponds to the tt final state.

We present a measurement of the W-boson mass using 200 pb{-1} of data collected in pp[over ] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at run II of the Fermilab Tevatron. With a sample of 63 964 W-->enu candidates and 51 128 W-->munu candidates, we measure M_{W}=80 413+/-34{stat}+/-34{syst}=80,413+/-48 MeV/c;{2}.

We introduce a two-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with self-attractive cubic nonlinearity in a rotating reference frame. The model applies to a Bose-Einstein condensate stirred by a rotating strong optical lattice, or light propagation in a twisted bundle of nonlinear fibers. Two types of localized states are constructed: off-axis fundamental solitons (FSs), placed at distance R from the rotation pivot, and on-axis (R=0) vortex solitons (VSs), with vorticities S=1 and 2 .

The basic current-carrying mechanism through a superconducting weak link embedded in a resistive environment undergoes a continuous crossover, as the voltage increases, from Josephson Cooper pair transfer exciting electromagnetic modes in the environment to multiple Andreev reflections leading to the creation of quasiparticles. We corroborate these ideas through measurements of the dc current-voltage characteristics of superconducting atomic contacts containing channels of arbitrary and adjustable transmission. We present a simple model, in the spirit of the classical resistively shunted junction model, that accounts well for the observed characteristics.
