Increased oxidative stress in children exposed to passive smoking.

Background: Atherogenic process is accelerated with cigarette smoke that contains many oxidants and prooxidants, capable of producing free radical and enhancing the oxidative stress. We investigated oxidative and antioxidative status of children who had been exposed to passive smoking and compared with those of not exposed group.

Methods: One hundred forty-three school children aged 9-13 years, 61 of whom had never been exposed to passive smoking, and 82 of whom had been exposed to passive smoking at least 10 cigarette per day for at least last 1 year in their house, were enrolled in this study.

The utility of lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme pattern in the diagnostic evaluation of malignant and nonmalignant ascites.

Objective: Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), a tetrameric protein composed of four monomers, is expressed as five isoenzymes. Serum LDH isoenzymes may be useful in differential diagnosis of ascites etiology since tissue damage releases isoenzymes contained therein, leading to a change in their pattern.

Materials And Methods: We determined ascitic fluid LDH level and LDH isoenzyme activities in patients with malignant and nonmalignant ascites in a total of 76 patients (43 males and 33 females).

Thrombocytopenia in brucellosis: case report and literature review.

Background: Brucellosis, constituting a major health problem in many parts of the world--particularly in the Mediterranean and the Middle East--is a multisystem disease with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. Hematological abnormalities ranging from a fulminant state of disseminated intravascular coagulopathy to subtle hemostatic alterations have been reported in brucella infection. Immunemediated thrombocytopenia is also a clinically important mechanism that can be encountered during brucellosis.

Improvement of colonic healing by preoperative rectal irrigation with short-chain fatty acids in rats given radiotherapy.

Background: We investigated the effect of preoperative rectal irrigation with short-chain fatty acids on irradiated colonic anastomosis in rats.

Methods: Sixty male Wistar rats were divided into four groups. Group I (control group, n = 15) underwent left colon resection and primary anastomosis.

[Gorlin syndrome with osteoma in the maxillary sinus (case report)].

Gorlin syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas of the skin, odontogenic keratocysts of the jaw, various skeletal abnormalities, and lamellar falx calsifications. Many associated lesions have been reported. In this report, we present a case of Gorlin syndrome with an osteoma in the maxillary sinus which has never been reported in the literature.

The role of gamma probe activity counts in minimally invasive parathyroidectomy. Preliminary results.

Aim: The benefit of preoperative gamma probe in the diagnosis of adenoma in patients with histopathologically proven parathyroid (PT) adenomas was examined.

Patients, Material, Methods: 20 patients with positive (99m)Tc MIBI uptake in PT scintigraphy with primary hyperparathyroidism were enrolled in this study. 740 MBq (99m)Tc MIBI were injected 3 h before operation.

Lack of association between RNASEL Arg462Gln variant and the risk of breast cancer.

Background: The RNASEL G1385A variant was recently found to be implicated in the development of prostate cancer. Considering the function of RNase L and the pleiotropic effects of mutations associated with cancer, we sought to investigate whether the RNASEL G1385A variant is a risk factor for breast cancer.

Patients And Methods: A total of 453 breast cancer patients and 382 age- and sex-matched controls from Greece and Turkey were analyzed.

Color Doppler ultrasonography findings of bladder tumors: correlation with stage and histopathologic grade.

Purpose: To describe color Doppler ultrasonography findings of bladder tumors and to investigate the correlation between these findings with stage and histopathological grade.

Material And Methods: Twenty-four patients with bladder tumors were assessed with color Doppler ultrasonography for tumor size, presence of vascularity, vascular pattern, and spectral properties. All patients underwent surgery.

Isoniazid and hypoglycaemia in a premature infant.

Severe hypoglycaemia requiring more than 20 mg/kg per minute glucose infusion was seen in a premature infant. The infant was born to a woman with active tuberculosis, and she was on prophylactic isoniazid. Discontinuation of isoniazid resulted in prompt recovery of hypoglycaemia.

Efficacy of local adrenalin injection during sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus excision.

Background: The most commonly preferred treatment method for sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease is surgery. Peroperative and postoperative hemorrhages may develop frequently because of the increased vascularity of the region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of adrenalin, a potent vasoconstrictor agent, on pilonidal sinus operations in comparison to a control group.

Granulocytic sarcoma of the colon and leukemic infiltration of the liver in a patient presenting with hematochezia and jaundice.

Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is an extramedullary tumor composed of immature cells of the granulocytic series known to occur in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome, chronic myelogenous leukemia, or acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Involvement of the gastrointestinal tract is relatively rare in GS. We present an extremely rare case of GS of the colon and liver infiltration in a 60-year-old male patient with AML presenting with jaundice and hematochezia and review the literature.

[A case of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia with atypical clinical and radiological progress].

Eosinophilic lung disease is characterised by eosinophilic infiltration of lung tissue besides peripherical blood and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid eosinophilia. A 48 year-old male who attended our clinics with cough and sputum lasting for 2-3 months, has been evaluated for micronodular interstitial infiltration bilaterally in all lung areas. Eosinophilia was detected in hemogram but BAL fluid was not diagnostic.

Renal failure in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and coexisting dermato-polymyositis: first report in the literature.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is a multisystem disorder characterized by multiple, bilateral renal cysts and is also associated with cysts in other organs, such as the liver, pancreas, and arachnoid membranes. Dermatomyositis is a disease which mainly involves the skin and muscles, although occasionally other organs are affected. In this report, a 56-year-old male patient with a four-year history of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease was presented.

Airway disease risk from environmental tobacco smoke among coffeehouse workers in Turkey.

Objectives: To examine the effect of ETS exposure on respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function and to compare workers in coffeehouses to those in other occupations in order to assess the risk of respiratory illness in this occupation.

Prolonged fever of unknown origin (FUO) is a challenging and important medical problem. Tuberculosis is the most frequent cause of FUO, especially in endemic regions, such as developing countries. We present a case of cervico-mediastinal tuberculous lymphadenitis that had been searched and followed up as a prolonged FUO.

A novel isoform of sarcolemmal membrane-associated protein (SLMAP) is a component of the microtubule organizing centre.

The microtubule organizing centre (MTOC) or the centrosome serves a crucial role in the establishment of cellular polarity, organization of interphase microtubules and the formation of the bipolar mitotic spindle. We have elucidated the genomic structure of a gene encoding the sarcolemmal membrane-associated protein (SLMAP), which encodes a 91 kDa polypeptide with a previously uncharacterized N-terminal sequence encompassing a forkhead-associated (FHA) domain that resides at the centrosome. Anti-peptide antibodies directed against SLMAP N-terminal sequences showed colocalization with gamma-tubulin at the centrosomes at all phases of the cell cycle.

Serum concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in neonatal calves with presumed septicemia.

This study was performed to determine the concentrations of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in the serum of neonatal calves with presumed sepsis and determine the correlation between serum concentrations of TNF and the severity and outcome of disease. Thirty-five sick calves < 30 days old that suffered from enteritis, respiratory disease, or both were considered suitable for inclusion in this study by satisfying clinical and laboratory criteria suggestive of septicemia. At admission, blood samples were collected from all calves to determine the prevalence of high concentrations of TNF.
