Plasma membrane cyclic nucleotide gated calcium channels control land plant thermal sensing and acquired thermotolerance.

Typically at dawn on a hot summer day, land plants need precise molecular thermometers to sense harmless increments in the ambient temperature to induce a timely heat shock response (HSR) and accumulate protective heat shock proteins in anticipation of harmful temperatures at mid-day. Here, we found that the cyclic nucleotide gated calcium channel (CNGC) CNGCb gene from Physcomitrella patens and its Arabidopsis thaliana ortholog CNGC2, encode a component of cyclic nucleotide gated Ca(2+) channels that act as the primary thermosensors of land plant cells. Disruption of CNGCb or CNGC2 produced a hyper-thermosensitive phenotype, giving rise to an HSR and acquired thermotolerance at significantly milder heat-priming treatments than in wild-type plants.

Stable alpha-synuclein oligomers strongly inhibit chaperone activity of the Hsp70 system by weak interactions with J-domain co-chaperones.

α-Synuclein aggregation and accumulation in Lewy bodies are implicated in progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson disease and related disorders. In neurons, the Hsp70s and their Hsp40-like J-domain co-chaperones are the only known components of chaperone network that can use ATP to convert cytotoxic protein aggregates into harmless natively refolded polypeptides. Here we developed a protocol for preparing a homogeneous population of highly stable β-sheet enriched toroid-shaped α-Syn oligomers with a diameter typical of toxic pore-forming oligomers.

An unusual association of small bowel atresia and biliary atresia: a case report.

The embryological development of the hepatobiliary bud presupposes that biliary and duodenal malformations are often associated. On the other hand, the association of biliary atresia with more distal small bowel malformations, possibly due to a vascular accident, seems to be fortuitous. We herewith report such a case and, on reviewing the literature, have found only two previous similar observations.

Frequency of testicular atrophy following incarcerated hernia.

From 1977 to 1981, 40 infants and children were operated for incarcerated inguinal hernia, 35 boys and 5 girls. During this time, 903 hernias were cured. Follow-up examination has been possible with 32 boys, from 6 months to 5 years after surgery.

[Prophylaxis of recurrent urinary infections in children. Long-term use of a weak dose of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole].

The efficacy of a long-term prophylaxis with Co-trimoxazole was studied in 18 girls with recurrent urinary tract infections. SEven patients had neither anatomical nor functional anomalies of the urinary tract. Eight patients had a vesico-ureteral reflux, and three patients a complex urinary problem.

Primary closure of laparoschisis.

Five consecutive cases of laparoschisis repaired with primary closure were successfully treated between 1977 and 1980. All five remained intubated after surgery and with assisted ventilation for 24 hours to 10 days. Parenteral alimentation was systematically instituted and continued from 10 to 30 days, until recovery of bowel function.

[Nephrotomy using in situ hypothermic perfusion. Apropos of a case].

The case of a 14 year old boy, suffering from severe bilateral nephrolithiasis, secondary to cystinuria, is presented. The progressive increase of the lithiasis, the dilatation of the excretory system of the right kidney and the painful passage of stones justified surgical removal of the staghorn stones on the right. The nephrolithotomy was performed under hypothermic perfusion of the kidney in situ, with section of the renal artery.

Surgical correction of caudal duplication.

The authors report the rare case of a dipygus monster. The infant had an omphalocele, a secondary pelvis with two limbs, an accessory pelvic kidney, and two bladders. At operation, the secondary pelvis and extremities were removed, and the omphalocele was repaired.

Intramural diverticulosis of the esophagus in an eight-year-old boy.

A third pediatric case of intramural diverticulosis of the esophagus is reported in an 8-year-old boy. A hiatal hernia, chronic nonspecific esophagitis and defective esophageal motility was also documented in his 10-year-old brother.
