Epidemiologic characteristics and burden of psoriasis: A multicenter, cross-sectional study.

Background: Although psoriasis burden and treatment have been well characterized in developed countries, there are scarce in-depth epidemiological studies in Latin American countries.

Objectives: To describe the sociodemographic and clinical features and the economic burden of psoriasis among children and adult patients from Colombia.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included patients from dermatology private practice offices, health provider institutions and hospitals in seven Colombian cities.

A checklist of helminths associated with reptiles (Tetrapoda: Reptilia) from Peru.

An annotated checklist of the helminth parasites associated with reptiles from Peru is provided, as the result of a compilation of parasitological papers published between 1963 and January 2022 and records of species deposited in national and international collections. The list provides data on hosts, developmental stage, sites of infection, geographical distribution in Peruvian territory, code of material deposited in helminthological collections, references and taxonomic notes. The database includes records of 106 different species of helminth parasites (82 nominal species and 24 taxa identified at the generic level), the majority in the adult stage.

Preoperative Doppler Ultrasonography Allen Test for Radial Forearm Free Flap in Oral Cancer Reconstruction: Implications in Clinical Practice.

The Radial Forearm Free Flap (RFFF) is one of the most widely used microsurgical flaps for intraoral reconstruction. Although the Clinical Allen Test (CAT) is the most widely used preoperative diagnostic method with which to study the distal patency of the hand prior to the use of RFFF, several authors have reported potentially preventable serious vascular complications. This study included 87 consecutive patients with cancer of the oral cavity and RFFF as the flap of choice who were treated between 2010 and 2020, and compares the results of the Clinical Allen Test (CAT), the Doppler Allen Test (DAT) and the Surgical Allen Test (SAT).

Integrating Genomic Screening into Primary Care: Provider Experiences Caring for Latino Patients at a Community-Based Health Center.

Introduction: Minority communities have had limited access to advances in genomic medicine. Mayo Clinic and Mountain Park Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center in Phoenix, Arizona, partnered to assess the feasibility of offering genomic screening to Latino patients receiving care at a community-based health center. We examined primary care provider (PCP) experiences reporting genomic screening results and integrating those results into patient care.

Experiences of Latino Participants Receiving Neutral Genomic Screening Results: A Qualitative Study.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to characterize experiences of Latino participants receiving genomic screening results.

Methods: Participants were recruited at a federally qualified health center in the USA. In-person, semi-structured interviews were conducted in either Spanish or English by a bilingual, bicultural interviewer.

Increasing access to individualized medicine: a matched-cohort study examining Latino participant experiences of genomic screening.

Purpose: Multiple efforts are underway to increase the inclusion of racial minority participants in genomic research and new forms of individualized medicine. These efforts should include studies that characterize how individuals from minority communities experience genomic medicine in diverse health-care settings and how they integrate genetic knowledge into their understandings of health-care needs.

Methods: As part of a large, multisite genomic sequencing study, we surveyed individuals to assess their decision to pursue genomic risk evaluation.

Secondary Cervicofacial Soft Tissue Reconstruction With Upper Trapezius Myocutaneous Flap in "Frozen Neck" With Bone Flap and Reconstructive Plate Exposure.

A frozen neck is a scarred neck with severe fibrosis with a loss of tissue planes secondary to prior irradiation with or without surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of cervicofacial reconstruction in patients with soft tissue defects and bone flap and reconstruction plate exposure with the upper trapezius myocutaneous flap. Fifteen oncologic patients with prior surgery and radiotherapy developed soft tissue dehiscence with bone and osteosynthesis material exposure.

Hallopeau type of pemphigus vegetans, an unusual clinical presentation of an infrequent disease.

Pemphigus vegetans is a rare variant of pemphigus vulgaris, characterized by vegetative lesions that develop mainly in flexural areas. Herein, we present a middle-aged woman who presented to the emergency department with a rare cutaneous finding of bilateral axillary pustules that progressed over months to vegetant and malodorous plaques associated with subsequent painful erosions.

Psychodermatologic pathology in adolescents: findings from the Colombian National Mental Health Survey.

Background: Associations between mental health and dermatology have generated a new branch of study called psychodermatology, which includes relevant conditions to the adolescent population. However, there is limited research focusing on this field and this specific population.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of dermatological pathologies in the Colombian adolescent population and their possible associations with mental health conditions.

Returning genomic results in a Federally Qualified Health Center: the intersection of precision medicine and social determinants of health.

Purpose: This report describes the return of sequencing results to low-income Latino participants recruited through a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). We describe challenges in returning research results secondary to social determinants of health and present lessons learned to guide future genomic medicine implementation studies in low-resource settings.

Methods: Five hundred Latino adults (76% women) consented to research sequencing for a predetermined panel of actionable genes.

Contact-angle-hysteresis effects on a drop sitting on an incline plane.

We study the contact-angle hysteresis and morphology changes of a liquid drop sitting on a solid substrate inclined with respect to the horizontal at an angle α. This one is always smaller than the critical angle, α_{crit}, above which the drop would start to slide down. The hysteresis cycle is performed for positive and negative α's (|α|<α_{crit}), and a complete study of the changes in contact angles, free surface, and footprint shape is carried out.

Developing a Process for Returning Medically Actionable Genomic Variants to Latino Patients in a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Aim: To develop a process for returning medically actionable genomic variants to Latino patients receiving care in a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Methods: Prior to recruitment, researchers met with primary care providers to (1) orient clinicians to the project, (2) establish a process for returning actionable and nonactionable results to participants and providers through the electronic health record, and (3) develop a process for offering clinical decision support for follow-up education and care. A Community Advisory Board was engaged to provide input on recruitment strategies and materials for conveying results to participants.

Attempted use of PACE for riboswitch discovery generates three new translational theophylline riboswitch side products.

Objective: The purpose of this project was to use an in vivo method to discover riboswitches that are activated by new ligands. We employed phage-assisted continuous evolution (PACE) to evolve new riboswitches in vivo. We started with one translational riboswitch and one transcriptional riboswitch, both of which were activated by theophylline.

Wetting and dewetting processes in the axial retraction of liquid filaments.

We study the hydrodynamic mechanisms involved in the motion of the contact line formed at the end region of a liquid filament laying on a planar and horizontal substrate. Since the flow develops under partially wetting conditions, the tip of the filament recedes and forms a bulged region (head) that subsequently develops a neck region behind it. Later the neck breaks up leading to a separated drop, while the rest of the filament restarts the sequence.

Facial nerve reconstruction following radical parotidectomy and subtotal petrosectomy for advanced malignant parotid neoplasms.

Introduction: To describe the oncological management and functional outcome of patients with advanced parotid malignant tumors undergoing facial nerve reconstruction after radical parotidectomy and subtotal petrosectomy.

Materials And Methods: A combined approach was used to treat advanced stage parotid malignancies with intrapetrous involvement of the facial nerve main trunk or abutment on the stylomastoid foramen. Patients underwent facial nerve rehabilitation with cable graft reconstruction or with static techniques.

Relationship among respondent ethnicity, ethnic identity, acculturation, and homeless status on a homeless population's functional status.

This study investigated the relationship of homeless status, ethnic identity, respondent ethnicity (African American, Latino, Native American, and Anglo), and Latino, Anglo, and Mexican American orientation on the functional impairment (Behavior and Symptom Identification Scale, BASIS-32; S. V. Eisen, 1996) of 355 homeless men and women who were interviewed in Pomona, California.

Residency in the United States, subjective well-being, and depression in an older Mexican-origin sample.

Objective: To compare the mental health and well-being of Mexican immigrants with native-born Mexican Americans living in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

Methods: A randomly stratified sample of 353 Hispanics aged 45 and older were interviewed. The immigrant group (n = 148) was compared with native-born Mexican Americans (n = 205).

Prevalence of diabetes mellitus and related conditions in a south Texas Mexican American sample.

The prevalence of self-reported diabetes mellitus in a Mexican American sample population living in Hidalgo County in south Texas was examined along with risk for related sequelae. Data from a stratified random sample of 849 Mexican American men and women ages 45 and older were examined. A subsample of 193 diabetics was compared to 656 nondiabetics with respect to hospitalization, reasons for hospitalization, and other related medical conditions.

Statistical and clinical evaluation of the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale-Spanish adaptation: an initial investigation.

The usefulness of the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (MDRS) for Spanish dominant elderly adults has seen little empirical documentation, though there is considerable reason to hypothesize its value with this diverse and growing population. A Spanish adaptation of the MDRS (MDRS-SA) was developed for the present study in a manner to facilitate linguistic equivalence. Reliability for the MDRS-SA showed high split half internal consistency across all scales and Total Score.
