Regional populations of geographically widespread species may respond to different environmental factors across the species' range, generating divergent effects of climate change on life-history phenology. Using thousands of citizen science observations extracted from iNaturalist and associated with corresponding temperature, precipitation, elevation, and daylength information, we examined the drivers of adult mating and of nymphal phenology, development, and group size for populations of the large milkweed bug, , in different ecoregions. Research-grade iNaturalist images were correctly identified 98.

Psychedelics, also known as classical hallucinogens, affect processes related to perception, cognition and sensory processing mostly via the serotonin 5-HT receptor (5-HTR). This class of psychoactive substances, which includes lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin, mescaline and the substituted amphetamine 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOI), is receiving renewed attention for their potential therapeutic properties as it relates to psychiatric conditions such as depression and substance use disorders. Current studies focused on the potentially clinical effects of psychedelics on human subjects tend to exclude sex as a biological variable.

This study sought to determine the effectiveness of an 8 wk reduced-exertion high-intensity interval training (REHIT) at improving cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and positively modifying cardiometabolic health in the workplace environment. Participants (n = 32) were randomized to two groups: (1) One group (n = 16) was prescribed an 8 wk REHIT program, and (2) one group (n = 16) was prescribed moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). Cardiometabolic risk factors and CRF were measured at baseline and 8 wks.

Among New World direct-developing frogs belonging to the clade Brachycephaloidea (= Terraranae), there are several genera with uncertain phylogenetic placements. One notable example is the genus Niceforonia Goin Cochran 1963, which includes three species that are endemic to Colombia. Three specimens of the species Niceforonia nana were collected and for the first time the genus is included in a molecular phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial (mtDNA; 12S and 16S) and nuclear (nucDNA; TYR and RAG1) markers.

Chiasmocleis is the most species-rich genus of Neotropical microhylids. Herein, we provide the first comprehensive multilocus phylogeny for the genus, including all but 3 of the 34 recognized species and multiple individuals per species. We discuss cryptic speciation, species discovery, patterns of morphological evolution, and provide a historical biogeographic analysis to account for the current distribution of the genus.

Preclinical findings in rodent models pointed toward activation of metabotropic glutamate 2/3 (mGlu2/3) receptors as a new pharmacological approach to treat psychosis. However, more recent studies failed to show clinical efficacy of mGlu2/3 receptor agonism in schizophrenia patients. We previously proposed that long-term antipsychotic medication restricted the therapeutic effects of these glutamatergic agents.

Antipsychotic drugs, including both typical such as haloperidol and atypical such as clozapine, remain the current standard for schizophrenia treatment. These agents are relatively effective in treating hallucinations and delusions. However, cognitive deficits are at present essentially either persistent or exacerbated following chronic antipsychotic drug exposure.

The Manitoba Follow-up Study (MFUS) is Canada's longest running study of cardiovascular disease and ageing. The MFUS cohort consists of 3983 men recruited from the Royal Canadian Air Force at the end of World War II. At entry to the study, 1 July 1948, their mean age was 31 years, with 90% between ages 20 and 39 years.

Purpose: Of all Canadian and American men who live to age 75 years, about half can expect to live to age 85. Our objective is to examine how clinical diagnoses made before age 75 relate to a man's survival to age 85 years.

Design And Methods: Since 1948, a cohort of 3,983 young men (mean age of 31 years at entry) has been followed with routine contact and medical examinations to prospectively document incident disease.

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a disease commonly associated with coronary artery disease. Most risk models for HF development have focused on patients with acute myocardial infarction. The Prevention of Events with Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibition population enabled the development of a risk model to predict HF in patients with stable coronary artery disease and preserved ejection fraction.

As many as half of all sudden cardiac deaths are unexpected, with no preceding symptoms or signs of cardiac problems. Since 1948, the Manitoba Follow-up Study has prospectively recorded routine medical information and resting electrocardiographic (ECG) findings from a cohort of 3983 men. During 58 years of follow-up, 180 men experienced sudden unexpected cardiac death (SUCD).

Although sudden cardiac death (SCD) has been extensively studied in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and low ejection fraction, prediction of SCD among individuals with preserved left ventricular systolic function is less well understood. We randomized 8,290 patients with stable CAD with preserved left ventricular systolic function to trandolapril or placebo in a secondary coronary prevention trial, and we used Cox proportional hazards models to identify independent baseline predictors of SCD during 4.8 year follow-up (median).

Purpose: As the first and only manifestation of ischemic heart disease, sudden unexpected cardiac death (SUCD) is a serious clinical and epidemiological concern. Prospective population studies permit the identification of risk factors for SUCD. Knowledge of the short-and long-term risks for SUCD are key to understanding the basis of any intervention.

Objective: The paper demonstrates the value of the Health Sciences Library/Fuld Campus to the organization and shows how responses from patrons aligned themselves with the categories of the taxonomy of contributions of library and information services (LIS) to hospital and academic health centers devised by Abels et al.

Methods: Over a period of thirty-two months during 2001 to 2003, patrons' literature searches and interlibrary loans were followed up on by sending patrons letters, which included a question asking for feedback as to how the information was used. The comments from users were analyzed according to Abels et al.

Purpose: Although the concept of successful aging is used widely in the field of gerontology, there is no agreed-on standard or common underlying definition for measuring success in aging. Our recent survey of an elderly male population asked respondents to define "successful aging." This paper describes the themes that evolved from those definitions, explores interrelationships between the themes, and examines the association between characteristics of respondents and the themes provided in their definition.

At Capital Health System/Fuld Campus (formerly Helene Fuld Medical Center), the Health Sciences Library lost many books and videocassettes. These materials were listed in the catalog but were missing when staff went to the shelves. The hospital had experienced a downsizing of staff, a reorganization, and a merger.

Background: The role of lipid modification in stroke prevention is controversial, although increasing evidence suggests that HMG-CoA reductase inhibition may reduce cerebrovascular events in patients with prevalent coronary artery disease.

Methods And Results: To test the hypothesis that cholesterol reduction with pravastatin may reduce stroke incidence after myocardial infarction, we followed 4159 subjects with average total and LDL serum cholesterol levels (mean, 209 and 139 mg/dL, respectively) who had sustained an infarction an average of 10 months before study entry and who were randomized to pravastatin 40 mg/d or placebo in the Cholesterol and Recurrent Events (CARE) trial. Using prospectively defined criteria, we assessed the incidence of stroke, a prespecified secondary end point, and transient ischemic attack (TIA) over a median 5-year follow-up period.

Two cases demonstrating unusual side effects of warfarin are described. The first case illustrates the 'purple toes' syndrome, which occurred as a complication following the use of warfarin for the treatment of atrial fibrillation and stroke. The second case is an example of warfarin-induced vasculitis in a patient with a mechanical valve prosthesis.
