Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of on-pump vs off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in Peru, focusing on survival and short- to mid-term outcomes.
  • Using a propensity score-matched analysis of 2280 patients, key comparisons were made between the two techniques regarding major adverse events and overall health outcomes post-surgery.
  • Results revealed that off-pump CABG was associated with lower short- and long-term mortality rates and fewer complications compared to on-pump CABG, suggesting it may be a safer option for patients.

Introduction: The operating room is no longer the ideal place for early surgica training of cardiothoracic surgery residents, forcing the search for simulation-based learning options. The study's aim was the construction and surgicaltraining of coronary anastomosis in a portable, low-cost, homemade simulator.

Methods: This is an observational, analytical, and multicenter study.

Article Synopsis
  • EVAR (Endovascular Aortic Repair) is shown to have better short-term outcomes than traditional Open repair for treating unruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms in a Peruvian cohort, with lower mortality rates and shorter hospital stays.
  • In the study of 251 patients, the majority had UIAAA diameters over 65 mm, with key risk factors including diabetes and prior abdominal surgery.
  • Long-term results indicated that while Open repair had lower mortality rates, EVAR patients experienced higher rates of aneurysmal rupture and reinterventions, highlighting complexities in choosing the appropriate treatment method.

Gerbode Defect (GD) is a rare congenital heart disease that mainly affects the upper portion of the membranous septum, generating a shunt between the left ventricle and the right atrium. Even though most cases are congenital, it has also been reported acquired cases due to cardiac surgery, infective endocarditis, acute ischemic heart disease, and invasive percutaneous procedures. The diagnostic workup includes the clinical evaluation and the echocardiographic study.

Introduction: There is currently no universal and uniform pattern of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in the lower limbs; however, it is influenced by various cardiovascular factors of the individual. The objective of this study was to identify the arteriographic patterns of PAD in the lower limbs according to cardiovascular factors in a Peruvian cohort of patients.

Methods: This is an analytical, observational, and retrospective study.

Background: The surgical approach to pathologies of the Ascending Thoracic Aorta (ATA) that compromise aortic root and the aortic arch is currently one of the most complex interventions in the spectrum of cardiac surgery, where circulatory arrest with cerebral perfusion plays an important role for Success postoperative and patient survival.

Case Presentation: We present the case of a 57-year-old patient with the only history of arterial hypertension and an ATA Aneurysm that compromised segment of the aortic root up to segment 2 of the aortic arch. A successful Bentall surgery was performed, debranching supra-aortic vessels with Total Circulatory Arrest with Deep Hypothermic Cerebral Perfusion-Antegrade Bilateral.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection can cause alterations in the coagulation mechanism conditioning thrombotic phenomena such as acute limb ischemia (ALI) as the only manifestation of the infection. The aim of the study was to describe clinical and surgical characteristics of a group of patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 who presented ALI in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic at Lima, Peru.

Methods: A multicenter, observational, and retrospective study was performed in six general hospitals, from March to July 2020.

Pseudocoarctation of the aorta (PCOA) is a rare anomaly of the aortic arch and its presentation is often an incidental finding. We present the case of a 66-year-old patient with a history of high blood pressure, who was admitted for surgical management of bicuspid aortic valve disease with severe insufficiency and who was incidentally detected to have a PCOA. It was decided to manage the latter conservatively and go ahead with surgical aortic valve replacement, to address the problem that led to his admission to the hospital.
