Experiments aimed at studying the role of microorganisms in the formation of kaolinite from aluminosilicate solutions (Si:Al = 1:1) are reported. The experiments were carried out at room temperature in presence of living microorganisms, Leonardite humic acid, bacterial debris, bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPS), and some organic ligands. The bacterial debris, EPS, Leonardite and organic ligands were chosen to stabilize Al in octahedral coordination for allowing the crystallization of kaolinite.

Article Synopsis
  • Structural income inequality, defined as the uneven distribution of income across regions, affects brain dynamics and functions more significantly than individual factors like age or education.
  • This study used EEG signals from 1,394 healthy participants across 10 countries to explore how structural inequality predicts various brain activity metrics, revealing a connection between socioeconomic conditions and neural functioning.
  • Results show that higher structural income inequality is associated with lower brain signal complexity, increased random neural activity, and reduced power in certain brain wave frequencies, suggesting the need for a broader understanding of how social factors influence brain health.

The biological stability of solid waste is one of the main problems related to the environmental impact of landfills and their long-term emission potential. Current European legislation (European Landfill Directive, EC/99/31) introduced the need to reduce biodegradable organic compounds deposited in landfills; however, it set neither official parameters nor methods to define the stability of such a waste. In Spain, biodegradability is generally evaluated using the biological oxygen demand/chemical oxygen demand (BOD/COD) ratio, measuring it on the leachate, thus not considering the non-soluble fraction and therefore creating false negatives.

Life on our planet likely evolved in the ocean, and thus exo-oceans are key habitats to search for extraterrestrial life. We conducted a data-driven bibliographic survey on the astrobiology literature to identify emerging research trends with marine science for future synergies in the exploration for extraterrestrial life in exo-oceans. Based on search queries, we identified 2592 published items since 1963.

The global increase in pharmaceutical consumption, driven by factors such as aging populations and chronic diseases, has raised concerns regarding the environmental impact of pharmaceutical contaminants. Europe, and more specifically Catalonia (Spain), exhibits high pharmaceutical consumption rates, potentially exacerbating environmental contamination. Pharmaceuticals enter rivers through various pathways, persisting after wastewater treatment plants and posing risks to aquatic organisms and human health.

Diversity in brain health is influenced by individual differences in demographics and cognition. However, most studies on brain health and diseases have typically controlled for these factors rather than explored their potential to predict brain signals. Here, we assessed the role of individual differences in demographics (age, sex, and education; n = 1298) and cognition (n = 725) as predictors of different metrics usually used in case-control studies.

The IUPAC International Chemical Identifier (InChI) is a structure-based chemical identifier that encodes various aspects of a chemical structure into a hierarchically layered line notation. Because InChI is non-proprietary, open-source, and freely available to everyone, it is adopted in popular chemical information resources and software programs. This paper describes the InChI Open Education Resource (OER) (https://www.

The neurocomputational model 'Directions into Velocities of Articulators' (DIVA) was developed to account for various aspects of normal and disordered speech production and acquisition. The neural substrates of DIVA were established through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), providing physiological validation of the model. This study introduces DIVA_EEG an extension of DIVA that utilizes electroencephalography (EEG) to leverage the high temporal resolution and broad availability of EEG over fMRI.
