Study Design: Face and content validation of a surgical simulation model.

Objective: Accidental transection of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) during bilateral sagittal split osteotomies (BSSO) has a reported incidence of up to 7%, determining important sensory disturbances in patients. Proper repair demands the need of microsurgical anastomosis skills.

Effect of aggressive vs conservative screening and confirmatory test on time to extubation among patients at low or intermediate risk: a randomized clinical trial.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the best strategy to achieve fast and safe extubation.

Methods: This multicenter trial randomized patients with primary respiratory failure and low-to-intermediate risk for extubation failure with planned high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) preventive therapy. It included four groups: (1) conservative screening with ratio of partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO) to fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO) ≥ 150 and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) ≤ 8 cmHO plus conservative spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) with pressure support 5 cmHO + PEEP 0 cmHO); (2) screening with ratio of partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO) to fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO) ≥ 150 and PEEP ≤ 8 plus aggressive SBT with pressure support 8 + PEEP 5; (3) aggressive screening with PaO/FiO > 180 and PEEP 10 maintained until the SBT with pressure support 8 + PEEP 5; (4) screening with PaO/FiO > 180 and PEEP 10 maintained until the SBT with pressure support 5 + PEEP 0.

Tissue-specific mitochondrial toxicity of cigarette smoke concentrate: consequence to oxidative phosphorylation.

Cigarette smoke exposure is a well-known risk factor for developing numerous chronic health conditions, including pulmonary disease and cardiometabolic disorders. However, the cellular mechanisms mediating the toxicity of cigarette smoke in extrapulmonary tissues are still poorly understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to characterize the acute dose-dependent toxicity of cigarette smoke on mitochondrial metabolism by determining the susceptibility and sensitivity of mitochondrial respiration from murine skeletal (gastrocnemius and soleus) and cardiac muscles, as well as the aorta to cigarette smoke concentrate (CSC).

[Proposal of an informed consent form to obtain audiovisual material from patients].

Background: An informed consent is mandatory to obtain any clinical audiovisual material from patients. Although there are some documents created for this purpose, there are some barriers for their application, such as the context in which they were created, the language and download availability.

Aim: To create a proposal for an informed consent form (ICF) for the capture and different uses for audiovisual material from patients.

The association between perioperative frailty and ability to complete a web-based geriatric assessment among older adults with cancer.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the degree to which patient frailty is associated with both need for assistance and time required to complete the eRFA, a web-based GA tool.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively identified patients who underwent surgery for cancer from 2015 to 2020, had a hospital length of stay ≥1 day, and completed the eRFA before surgery. Frailty was assessed using two methods: the MSK-FI (score 0-11) and the AGD (score 0-13).

MicrosimUC: Validation of a Low-Cost, Portable, Do-It-Yourself Microsurgery Training Kit.

Background:  Microsurgery depends largely on simulated training to acquire skills. Courses offered worldwide are usually short and intensive and depend on a physical laboratory. Our objective was to develop and validate a portable, low-cost microsurgery training kit.

Evaluation of Research Opportunities and Limitations for Plastic Surgery Residents: An International Survey.

Background: Conducting research during specialty training provides an opportunity to develop critical thinking and leadership skills along with a better understanding of the scientific literature. However, trainees often find it difficult to undertake research, in the context of labor-intensive surgical training. The aim of this study is to evaluate the research output and limitations of plastic surgery residents in different countries.

The Role of Behavioral and Neurocognitive Functioning in Substance Use Among Youth with Perinatally Acquired HIV Infection and Perinatal HIV Exposure Without Infection.

This study examined associations of self-regulatory behavior and cognitive functioning with substance use (SU) to inform interventions for youth with perinatal HIV infection (YPHIV) or exposure but uninfected (YPHEU). Youth aged 7-15 years (YPHIV, n = 390; YPHEU, n = 211) were followed longitudinally with cognitive testing and behavioral questionnaires including self-report of alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other SU. Cox proportional hazards analyses were used to examine correlates of initiating each substance for those without prior use at baseline and generalized estimating equation analyses were used to address associations of cognitive/behavioral measurements with SU prevalence for the entire sample.

Mind the Gap: a Competency-Based Scoping Review of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Reported Simulation Training Models.

Background: Simulation training has become an integral part of plastic surgery postgraduate curricula. It facilitates the acquisition of skills in a safe environment that can be later transferred to real-life settings. A variety of models have been described covering some aspects of the specialty better than others.

Proper perception of sounds in the environment requires auditory signals to be encoded with extraordinary temporal precision up to tens of microseconds, but how it originates from the hearing organs in the periphery is poorly understood. In particular, sound-evoked spikes in auditory afferent fibers are phase-locked to sound frequencies up to 5 kHz, but it is not clear how hair cells can handle intracellular Ca changes with such high speed and efficiency. In this study, we combined patch-clamp recording and two-photon Ca imaging to examine Ca dynamics in hair cell ribbon synapses in the bullfrog amphibian papilla of both sexes.

Avoiding a Second Wave of Medical Errors: The Importance of Human Factors in the Context of a Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on the delivery of healthcare services around the globe. This has resulted in important loss of life for our communities, including health professionals that have been exposed to the disease in their workplace. A human factors approach to the recent changes introduced due to the pandemic can help identify how we can minimize the impact of human error in these circumstances.

[Molecular identification of Aspergillus fumigatus isolated from patients with invasive aspergillosis].

The objective of the study was to identify molecularly-isolated strains of Aspergillus from patients with invasive aspergillosis (IA); these strains were primarily typed as Aspergillus fumigatus sensu lato by conventional phenotypic methods. We worked with 20 strains from the mycology section of the Institute of Tropical Medicine "Daniel A. Carrión.

A Novel Ex Vivo Training Model for Acquiring Supermicrosurgical Skills Using a Chicken Leg.

 Supermicrosurgery is a technique used for dissection and anastomosis of submillimeter diameter vessels. This technique requires precise hand movements and superb eye-hand coordination, making continuous training necessary. Biological in vivo and ex vivo models have been described for this purpose, the latter being more accessible and cost-effective.

Young adults perinatally infected with HIV perform more poorly on measures of executive functioning and motor speed than ethnically matched healthy controls.

Perinatal HIV is associated with significant neurocognitive morbidities, but few studies have examined cognitive impact of early HIV infection on patients surviving to adulthood. The purpose of this study was to evaluate neurocognitive outcomes among a cohort of perinatally infected young adults. Individuals between the ages of 18 and 24 with perinatal infection were recruited for this cross-sectional study along with similarly aged healthy controls.

Previous studies have indicated that hyperactivity of brain prorenin receptors (PRR) is implicated in neurogenic hypertension. However, the role of brain PRR in regulating arterial blood pressure (ABP) is not well understood. Here, we test the hypothesis that PRR activation in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) contributes to increased sympathetic nerve activity (SNA).
