A synovial cell count greater than 50,000/mm is the threshold most commonly used to diagnose septic arthritis. This lab value may be nonspecific in the setting of crystalline arthropathy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of diagnosing septic arthritis using a synovial cell count cut-off of 50,000/mm in the setting of crystalline arthropathy.

Dysregulation of gallbladder ion and water absorption and/or secretion has been linked to cholesterol crystal and gallstone formation. We have recently demonstrated that obese, leptin-deficient (Lep(ob)) mice have enlarged gallbladder volumes and decreased gallbladder contractility and that leptin administration to these mice normalizes gallbladder function. However, the effect of leptin on gallbladder absorption/secretion is not known.

-The present study examined free cholesterol (FC) crystallization in macrophage foam cells. Model foam cells (J774 or mouse peritoneal macrophages [MPMs]) were incubated with acetylated low density lipoprotein and FC/phospholipid dispersions for 48 hours, resulting in the deposition of large stores of cytoplasmic cholesteryl esters (CEs). The model foam cells were then incubated for up to 5 days with an acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) inhibitor (CP-113,818) in the absence of an extracellular FC acceptor to allow intracellular accumulation of FC.
