In this work, we describe a simple and portable lock-in amplifier designed to be used in photoacoustic measurements. The device was used to measure the thermal effusivity of eight different liquid samples (distilled water, glycerol, acetone, ethanol, 2-propanol, chloroform, hexane, and methanol), as well as the effusivity of acetone in aqueous solution at distinct concentrations, giving good results.

Due to the fact that the light modulation frequency f used in the photoacoustic experiments was so low that the thermal diffusion length of the TiO2 (mu = 100 microm) is always larger than the thickness of the studied films, the PAS turns out to be complementary to RS over the entire range. The presence of multiple reflection interference effects makes difficult a direct evaluation of the TiO2 band gap from the PAS signal.

The effect of different variables in the elaboration of these films, such as starch and glycerol concentrations and pH, were evaluated through the response surface methodology. Thermal properties of water containing bimetallic nanoparticles with different nominal compositions (Au/Pd = 12/1, 5/1, 1/1, 1/5) were measured using the mode mismatched dual-beam thermal lens technique to determine the effect of particle composition on the thermal diffusivity of the nanofluids. The characteristic time constant of the transient thermal lens was estimated by fitting the experimental data to the theoretical expression for transient thermal lens.
