The Southern Center for Maternal Health Equity (SCMHE): a multisector multifaceted community-based approach to reduce disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality in the Gulf South.

Introduction: The maternal mortality crisis in the United States disproportionately affects women who are Black, especially those living in the Gulf South. These disparities result from a confluence of healthcare, policy, and social factors that systematically place Black women at greater risk of maternal morbidities and mortality. This study protocol describes the Southern Center for Maternal Health Equity (SCMHE), a research center funded by the National Institutes of Health in 2023 to reduce preventable causes of maternal morbidity and mortality while improving health equity.

Educational intervention in first aid for early childhood education professional: a quasi-experimental study.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of a first aid educational intervention on the aptitude, knowledge, and practices of professionals in early childhood education.

Method: Quasi-experimental study of the pre and post-test type carried out in the brazilian municipality of Três Lagoas, MS. It was developed in three stages: 1) application of an online instrument to assess aptitude, knowledge, and practices about situations that require first aid; 2) educational intervention, with four theoretical meetings online and a face-to-face meeting with practical training; 3) reapplying the questionnaire.

Clinical performance of an ormocer-based single-shade resin composite for the restoration of non-carious cervical lesions: 18-month randomized clinical trial.

Objective: This double-blind, split-mouth, randomized equivalence clinical trial aimed to evaluate the 18-month clinical performance of an ormocer-based single-shade resin composite compared with an ormocer-based multi-shade resin composite in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs).

Methods: One hundred and twenty restorations were performed on NCCLs with two restorative materials (n = 60): Admira Fusion X-tra resin composite (ormocer-based single-shade), and Admira Fusion resin composite (ormocer-based multi-shade). After rubber dam isolation, a universal adhesive was applied in the selective enamel etching strategy.

Prediction based on machine learning of tooth sensitivity for in-office dental bleaching.

Objective: To develop a supervised machine learning model to predict the occurrence and intensity of tooth sensitivity (TS) in patients undergoing in-office dental bleaching testing various algorithm models.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective data from 458 patients were analyzed, including variables such as the occurrence and intensity of TS, basal tooth color, bleaching material characteristics (concentration and pH), intervention details (number and duration of applications), and patient age. Classification and regression models were evaluated using 5-fold cross-validation and assessed based on various performance parameters.

Proteases are also essential for the propagation of many viruses due to their role in cleavage of the viral polyprotein.

Response of Guiana dolphins to the construction of a bridge in Ilhéus, Northeastern Brazil.

This study aimed to investigate whether the use of space and movements of Guiana dolphins were altered during the construction of a cable-stayed bridge at the mouth of the Cachoeira River estuary in Ilhéus, Brazil. We described and compared the visitation rate, use of space, and movements of the Guiana dolphins across two periods: before the construction began (2015-2016) and during the construction of the bridge (2017-2020). A theodolite and a total station were used to observe and record the trajectories of the dolphins.

Tooth sensitivity in different arches post in-office dental bleaching: A multicenter randomized controlled trial.

Objective: To compare the risk and intensity of tooth sensitivity (TS) and gingival irritation (GI), as well as bleaching efficacy (BE) in the maxillary and mandibular arches after in-office dental bleaching.

Materials And Methods: 90 participants were randomly into two groups according to the arch (maxillary or mandibular) in which the patient will first receive a 35 % hydrogen peroxide gel (2 sessions; 1 × 30 min; 1 week apart). TS and GI were recorded immediately after, up to 1 h, 24 h and 48 h after bleaching, using the 0-10 Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).

Examining the role and graduate preparation of bilingual school psychologists in early childhood settings.

Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) comprise nearly a third of children enrolled in early childhood classrooms across the United States. Unfortunately, EB populations are often met with barriers that limit their opportunity to thrive in the school setting. Bilingual school psychologists (BSPs) are uniquely positioned to provide culturally and linguistically responsive academic and behavioral services to these young students.

Systematic review of culturally adapted SEL interventions for racially and ethnically minoritized preschool children.

Social-emotional skills are a growing area of focus for early childhood educators due to their contributions to young children's school readiness and long-term positive outcomes. Current research also highlights the need to confront biases leading to the overestimation of challenging behaviors in racially and ethnically minoritized children. When enacted into policy and practices, biases and overestimation of challenging behaviors result in disproportional, exclusionary disciplinary practices towards children from racially minoritized and economically marginalized backgrounds in early childhood educational settings.

Stability and Optoelectronic Properties of Two-Dimensional Gallium Phosphide.

Using first-principles calculations, density functional theory, and the tight-binding method, we investigate the optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional gallium phosphide (2D GaP). Our investigation covers electronic properties, such as band structure and electronic band gap, and optical properties, including absorption spectra, refractive index, and reflectivity, considering excitonic effects. Using the Knowledge to Action framework to improve housing and support for people with Multiple Sclerosis.

Background People with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) have unique housing and support needs that are essential for maintaining independence at home; however, there is limited research to guide the design of community living options for this population. The aim of this study was to examine housing and support needs and preferences of people with MS with the intention to inform the planning of a co-designed intervention based on the study's findings. Methods Using the Knowledge to Action (KTA) framework, quantitative (n =79) and qualitative (n =6) data from people with MS were extracted and integrated from projects completed by the research team that explored the housing and support needs and preferences of people with disability.

Fibropapillomatosis: A Review of the Disease with Attention to the Situation Northern Coast of Brazil.

Fibropapillomatosis in sea turtles is a potentially debilitating and fatal disease for which there is still a lack of knowledge, especially for specific regions of Brazil. The diagnosis is made through the observation of clinical manifestations, and despite its association with Chelonid Alphaherpesvirus 5 (ChHV5) as the etiological agent, the expression of the disease may also be related to immunological and environmental factors caused by anthropic degradation of the environment. Thus, this review aims to elucidate what is known about this disease globally, and especially in various regions of Brazil, promoting a better understanding of its evolution, spatiotemporal prevalence, and relationship with human activities.

The porcine skin microbiome exhibits broad fungal antagonism.

The skin and its microbiome function to protect the host from pathogen colonization and environmental stressors. In this study, using the Wisconsin Miniature Swine™ model, we characterize the porcine skin fungal and bacterial microbiomes, identify bacterial isolates displaying antifungal activity, and use whole-genome sequencing to identify biosynthetic gene clusters encoding for secondary metabolites that may be responsible for the antagonistic effects on fungi. Through this comprehensive approach of paired microbiome sequencing with culturomics, we report the discovery of novel species of Corynebacterium and Rothia.

Antifungal susceptibility and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) of Cryptococcus neoformans complex from HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis patients in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil.

Cryptococcus neoformans is primarily responsible for cases of cryptococcal meningitis in individuals with HIV/AIDS. This study evaluated the susceptibility of C. neoformans obtained from individuals with cryptococcal meningitis associated with HIV/AIDS in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, against the action of the antifungals amphotericin B, flucytosine, fluconazole, itraconazole and posaconazole and analyzed it using Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) in order to identify the Sequence Types (STs).

Miniaturized Near-Infrared spectrophotometers in forensic analytical science - a critical review.

The advent of miniaturized NIR instruments, also known as compact, portable, or handheld, is revolutionizing how technology can be employed in forensics. In-field analysis becomes feasible and affordable with these new instruments, and a series of methods has been developed to provide the police and official agents with objective, easy-to-use, tailored, and accurate qualitative and quantitative forensic results. This work discusses the main aspects and presents a comprehensive and critical review of compact NIR spectrophotometers associated with analytical protocols to produce information on forensic matters.

Multicenter, phase 1 study of etavopivat (FT-4202) treatment for up to 12 weeks in patients with sickle cell disease.

Etavopivat is an investigational, once daily, oral, selective erythrocyte pyruvate kinase (PKR) activator. A multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, 3-part, phase 1 study was conducted to characterize the safety and clinical activity of etavopivat. Thirty-six patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) were enrolled into 4 cohorts: 1 single-dose, 2 multiple ascending doses, and 1 open-label (OL).

Family involvement in rehabilitation programmes for children and adolescents with acquired brain injury: A scoping literature review.

Paediatric acquired brain injury (ABI) can adversely impact families, and it is widely accepted that families should be involved in the rehabilitation of children/adolescents with ABI. However, there is limited guidance about how to best involve families in paediatric ABI rehabilitation. Several programmes involving the families of children/adolescents with ABI have been developed, but there are no published reviews outlining their characteristics.
