Calcification of the ridge between the sinus of Valsalva and the tubular segments of the ascending aorta has been documented at autopsy, but no echocardiographic description has yet been published. We describe the two-dimensional echocardiographic appearances in 33 men (mean age, 69 years). Sinotubular ridge calcification manifested as a dense small echo projecting into the aortic lumen, precisely at the junction of the sinus of Valsalva and tubular aortic segments.

Memory model-based expectancy studies have shed light on the process by which expectancies may influence drinking but have not related changes in expectancy activation to drinking changes. In the present study, 38 undergraduates completed a drinking measure and factor-based and memory model-based expectancy measures, before and after an expectancy challenge intervention designed to alter expectancies. Expectancies were mapped into memory network format with individual differences scaling and likely paths of activation were modeled with preference mapping.

This report provides a morphological description of atypical and unusual mitral and submitral calcifications in patients with end-stage renal disease. The use of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) with enhanced image quality and resolution has made possible a detailed evaluation of the distribution and echocardiographic morphology of mitral calcification in end-stage renal disease. To our knowledge, there has been no such prior report with TEE.

The karyotype of Chelonus insularis (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Cheloninae) is described. The males show an haploid number of seven chromosomes and the females a diploid number of fourteen chromosomes, confirming haplo-diploid sex determination. Comparisons of these results with karyotypes of other species of the same family were done and a possible mechanism involved in the karyotype evolution of this species is discussed.

The effects of dyadic satisfaction and conflict have not been well defined in the hemodialysis (HD) population. The aim of this study was to determine whether the perception of decreased dyadic satisfaction was associated with mortality in patients treated with HD, and if so, whether there were different relationships between risk factors, and differential outcomes in men and women. A total of 174 HD patients, primarily African-Americans, involved in dyadic relationships for more than 6 mo had indices of dyadic satisfaction, depression, perception of illness effects, social support, behavioral compliance with the dialysis prescription, and plasma interleukin-1 (IL-1) and beta-endorphin levels measured.

p53 is a tumour suppressor gene encoding a protein whose function is impaired in a very large proportion of human cancers. The objectives of this study were to determine the natural history of p53 alterations during stages of oral carcinogenesis, by comparing p53 immunoexpression in oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs), their non-malignant adjacent mucosa, and respective metastases; and to define the potential practical consequences for clinical management of p53 staining in the non-malignant adjacent mucosa. Forty-two samples of non-malignant mucosa adjacent to OSCCs, the respective carcinomas, and six lymph node metastases derived from six of the OSCCs were investigated for p53 protein expression by immunohistochemistry.

Background: The medical risk factors associated with increased mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients are well known, but the psychosocial factors that may affect outcome have not been clearly defined. One key psychosocial factor, depression, has been considered a predictor of mortality, but previous studies have provided equivocal results regarding the association. We sought to determine whether depressive affect is associated with mortality in a longitudinal study of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients treated with HD, using multiple assessments over time.

The coronary sinus (CS) is a small tubular structure just above the posterior left atrioventricular junction. The CS can be imaged in several different echocardiographic views. Using zoom M-mode recordings of the CS in apical two-chamber view, CS caliber can be sharply imaged and easily measured during different phases of the cardiac cycle.

Reports on the association of EBV with oral squamous-cell carcinomas (OSCCs) are scarce and inconclusive. To determine the potential role of EBV in oral carcinogenesis, we investigated 36 EBV DNA PCR-positive OSCCs for the expression of EBV transcripts and proteins. From these EBV DNA-positive OSCCs, 13 were analysed for the presence of EBV products, either at RNA and/or protein level.

Background: Medical mortality determinants in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients treated with hemodialysis (HD) are well known. More recently, associations have been established between the dose of dialysis administered and patient survival. We showed in a prospective study that both dialyzer type and patient compliance with the dialysis prescription were independently associated with survival.

Twenty healthy subjects and 39 Chronic Renal Failure patients (CRF-patients) maintained on chronic hemodialysis were used in this investigation to study the changes in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity of red blood cells (RBCs). The CRF-patients were all undergoing hemodialysis treatment. AChE activity from the CRF-patients was determined before and after dialysis.

The LH and FSH responses post GnRH, and the sex steroid hormone responses post hCG stimulation were evaluated in a group of 41 adolescents (mean age 15.09 +/- 2.27) with unilateral varicocele to study the relation between the pituitary gonadotropin and sex steroid hormone responses to the patients' age and pubertal stages.

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and natural killer (NK) cells use the secretory pathway of perforin/granzymes to kill their target cells. In contrast to NK cells, CTL responses are MHC class I restricted. In this study we analysed the relative activation of CTL and NK cells in relation with MHC class I expression on oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs).

Background: Taenia solium neurocysticercosis (NCC) has been documented as one of the major causes of epilepsy in developing countries. However, methodological limitations have hindered the evaluation of the epidemiological relationship between cysticercosis and epilepsy at the community level.

Methods: We used the WHO protocol for epidemiological evaluation of neurological disorders to conduct a door-to-door survey among 2723 residents of San Pablo del Lago, an Ecuadorean rural community in which T.

Taenia solium neurocysticercosis (NCC) has been documented to be an underlying cause of epilepsy, intractable headaches, hydrocephalus, dementia and other serious neurological conditions in many countries of Central and South America. However, methodological limitations had prevented the assessment of the true prevalence of this condition at the community level. We conducted a house-to-house neuroepidemiological survey of 6,118 residents of an Andean community.

M-mode echography of the coronary sinus in the apical 2-chamber view enabled us to measure coronary sinus caliber at specific phases of the cardiac cycle. Coronary sinus narrowing occurs consistently during atrial contraction, but is always absent in atrial fibrillation; in patients with congestive heart failure and systemic venous congestion, this narrowing is significantly attenuated.

To determine the possible changes in semen quality of Venezuelan men from 1981 to 1995, a retrospective analysis of semen volume and sperm concentrations was carried out for 2313 men from infertile couples. According to the sperm counts the sample was categorized in four groups: A, 0 sperm; B, <20 x 10(6) sperm/mL; C, 20-200 x 10(6) sperm/mL; D, 2200 x 10(6) sperm/mL. The percentage of men in each group was 9.

Biological detectors such as the human nose or an insect antenna represent extremely attractive detectors for gas chromatography (GC) since they are specifically tuned to perceive biologically relevant compounds. However, these detectors are nonlinear, noisy and often perform poorly under standard GC conditions since they are adapted to detect transient rather than long-lasting stimuli. These drawbacks can be overcome if the chemical stimulus, delivered by the gas chromatograph, is re-shaped (modulated) before reaching the biological detector.

Our multisystem approach addressed the recruitment of African American families with a chronically, physically ill member. The approach focused on the social transactions between the family, the healthcare team, and the research staff, and the influence of these transactions on family recruitment. This multisystem approach included three core strategies: defining the membership of families in a culturally appropriate fashion and engaging those members; engaging the healthcare team; and building and maintaining the skills and morale of the research staff.
