Climate change is one of the main challenges that human societies are currently facing. Given that forests represent major natural carbon sinks in terrestrial ecosystems, administrations worldwide are launching broad-scale programs to promote forests, including stands of non-native trees. Yet, non-native trees may have profound impacts on the functions and services of forest ecosystems, including the carbon cycle, as they may differ widely from native trees in structural and functional characteristics.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and neuropathological hallmarks, including β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques, Tau tangles, synaptic dysfunction and neurodegeneration. Emerging evidence suggests that abnormal iron (Fe) metabolism plays a role in AD pathogenesis, but the precise spatial distribution of the Fe and its transporters, such as ferroportin (FPN), within affected brain regions remains poorly understood. This study investigates the distribution of Fe and FPN in the CA1 region of the human hippocampus in AD patients with a micrometer lateral resolution using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).

Non-native trees may have significant impacts on the carbon sink capacity of forested lands. However, large-scale patterns of the relative capacity of native and non-native forests to uptake and store carbon remain poorly described in the literature, and this information is urgently needed to support management decisions. In this study, we analyzed 17,065 plots from the Spanish Forest Inventory (covering c.

Climate and forest structure are considered major drivers of forest demography and productivity. However, recent evidence suggests that the relationships between climate and tree growth are generally non-stationary (i.e.

The authors describe the use of platinum nanoclusters (PtNCs) as bimodal labels in a competitive immunoassay for immunoglobulin E (IgE). Both fluorometry and inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) are used. Optimization of the PtNCs synthesis using lipoic acid as ligand was carried out.

Silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) were investigated as labels for the development of a fluoroimmunoassay for the complement factor H (CFH). The reductive one-pot synthesis of AgNCs using lipoic acid as a ligand was optimized by varying the concentration of NaBH, the temperature and the reaction time. The average diameter and crystal structure of the AgNCs (which display red fluorescence) were determined by HR-TEM.

Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is proposed for a better understanding of metals and proteins distribution in micrometre structures of human brain tissues. Simultaneous absolute quantitative imaging of Fe and ferroportin (FPN), in 5 µm thick tissue sections of the stratum pyramidale of hippocampus CA1 region, was carried out for Alzheimer disease (AD) patients and healthy controls (HC). For the imaging of FPN by LA-ICP-MS, antibodies were labelled via carbodiimide crosslinking with fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) of 2.

Laser ablation (LA) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a versatile tool for direct trace elemental and isotopic analysis of solids. The development of new strategies for quantitative elemental mapping of biological tissues is one of the growing research areas in LA-ICP-MS. On the other hand, the latest advances are related to obtaining not only the elemental distribution of heteroatoms but also molecular information.

A sensitive methodology using antibody-conjugated gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) was developed for the quantitative bioimaging of specific proteins in biological tissues by laser ablation (LA) coupled to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Determination of metallothioneins (MT1/2 protein isoforms) images in human retina tissue sections was carried out as a proof of concept. AuNCs used as label were conjugated to the selected antibody through carbodiimide coupling.

In this research, quasi-spherical-shaped zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were synthesized by a simple cost-competitive aqueous precipitation method. The engineered NPs were characterized using several validation methodologies: UV–Vis spectroscopy, diffuse reflection UV–Vis, spectrofluorometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection (ATR). A procedure was established to coat a landrace of red maize using gelatinized maize starch.

An immunohistochemical method is described to visualize the distribution of metallothioneins 1/2 (MT 1/2) and metallothionein 3 (MT 3) in human ocular tissue. It is making use of (a) antibodies conjugated to gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) acting as labels, and (b) laser ablation (LA) coupled to inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Water-soluble fluorescent AuNCs (with an average size of 2.

Background: The features in a clinical history from a patient with suspected primary immunodeficiency (PID) direct the differential diagnosis through pattern recognition. PIDs are a heterogeneous group of more than 250 congenital diseases with increased susceptibility to infection, inflammation, autoimmunity, allergy and malignancy. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a multivariate supervised classification method to sort objects of study into groups by finding linear combinations of a number of variables.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 12-week strength training program on movement time (MT) on fencers of national level. Twelve male fencers were randomly divided into 2 groups: the control group (CG: N = 6; age, 22.3 ± 8.

Because the service lives of nuclear power plants are limited to a certain number of years, the need for the management of quite a large volume of radioactive contaminated concrete arises, which, in most cases, was not taken into account when the capacities of the low and medium activity repositories were designed. Therefore, the decontamination of these structures would be of great interest in order to declassify the wastes as radioactive and manage them as conventional ones. This research studies the reliability of the application of electrical fields to decontaminate radioactive contaminated concrete.
