Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio at diagnosis predicts colonoscopic activity in pediatric inflammatory bowel diseases (pIBD).

Background: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a novel biomarker studied in several autoimmune diseases including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in adults, but poorly characterized in pediatric IBD (pIBD). We aimed to primarily investigate the relationship between NLR and pIBD endoscopic disease severity. We also examined whether NLR predicted hospitalization, surgery, and therapy response by 52 weeks.

Pediatric Scleral Lenses: 21-Year Retrospective Review.

Purpose: Retrospective study to review scleral lens outcomes in the pediatric population over a 21-year period, at a single clinical center.

Results: A total of 209 pediatric eyes (108 males and 101 females), distributed between 97 right and 112 left eyes, of which 147 eyes had ocular surface disease and 62 eyes had irregular cornea/refractive conditions, were treated with scleral lenses over a 21-year period. The mean age at the time of treatment initiation was 10.

Heterogeneity of definition of upper gastrointestinal tract in different guidelines of Crohn's disease: A scoping review.

Crohn's Disease (CD) can affect any part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the upper GI tract (UGIT). However, the definitions and classifications of upper GI CD (UGICD) vary. We conducted a scoping review to explore how UGIT and UGICD are defined and to assess the heterogeneity of these definitions in published CD guidelines, aiming to inform future initiatives for harmonizing definitions.

Background: Shared decision-making (SDM) has yet to be successfully adopted into routine use in psychiatric settings amongst people living with severe mental illnesses. Objectives: In an era of increasing paediatric obesity and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), this study evaluates the disease phenotype and clinical course of Crohn's disease (CD) in paediatric patients who are obese or overweight.

Methods: This is a retrospective, single-center, descriptive observational study from January 2010 to May 2020. Participants were included if they were: aged 2 to 18 years at the time of diagnosis, had a confirmed diagnosis of CD, and met WHO criteria for overweight or obesity at the time of diagnosis or within one year before diagnosis.

Accelerating Progress Towards the 2030 Neglected Tropical Diseases Targets: How Can Quantitative Modeling Support Programmatic Decisions?

Over the past decade, considerable progress has been made in the control, elimination, and eradication of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Despite these advances, most NTD programs have recently experienced important setbacks; for example, NTD interventions were some of the most frequently and severely impacted by service disruptions due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Mathematical modeling can help inform selection of interventions to meet the targets set out in the NTD road map 2021-2030, and such studies should prioritize questions that are relevant for decision-makers, especially those designing, implementing, and evaluating national and subnational programs.

Operating Properties of Disease Activity Indices in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review.

Background: Accurate, reliable, and responsive disease activity indices are important to streamline drug approval and treatment modalities for pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (pIBD). We aimed to identify all scoring indices used in pIBD randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and to evaluate their operating properties.

Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CENTRAL were searched on December 6, 2022, to identify studies evaluating clinical, endoscopic, imaging, or patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in pIBD including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).

Home-based fecal calprotectin utilization in a general pediatric gastroenterology clinic.

Objective: Remote investigation and monitoring have gained importance in ambulatory practice. A home-based fecal calprotectin (FC) test has been developed where the sample is processed and analyzed at home through a smartphone application. We aimed to assess the use of standard ELISA (sFC) versus home-based (hFC) FC testing in a general pediatric gastroenterology clinic.

Perspectives of the Friedreich ataxia community on gene therapy clinical trials.

Gene therapy is a potential treatment for Friedreich ataxia, with multiple programs on the horizon. The purpose of this study was to collect opinions about gene therapy from individuals 14 years or older with Friedreich ataxia or parents/caregivers of Friedreich ataxia patients who were diagnosed as children 17 or younger. Participants were asked to complete a survey after reading brief educational materials regarding gene therapy.
