Methods: The authors offered a surgery residency prep course to graduating medical students. We used an anonymous survey to assess the perceived confidence in medical knowledge, clinical skills and surgical skills pre-course, post-course, and at six months into residency.

Background: Variation in size of the internal mammary artery has been demonstrated in ethnic groups, but not reported in Aboriginal patients. We hypothesised that the left internal mammary artery is smaller in Aboriginal patients compared to non-Aboriginal patients and aimed to determine the impact on survival following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

We present a case of a 68-year-old man who presents with worsening cough and dyspnoea 12 months after undergoing radiofrequency ablation therapy for atrial fibrillation. He underwent a stage surgical resection with the first stage being a left lower lobectomy for the non-viable lobe followed by a repair of the left upper pulmonary vein via anastomosis with the left atrial appendage.

Background: Due to the nature of border closures and quarantine requirements in Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic, the feasibility of interstate travel for organ retrieval created complex logistics. An organ procurement service in South Australia, to procure heart and lungs of local donors, was commenced to mitigate the impact of the travel restrictions imposed due to COVID-19. The purpose of this review was to examine the initial data and feasibility of the service.

Clinical predictors of poor outcomes in patients with sickle cell disease and COVID-19 infection.

We aimed to identify predictors of outcomes and survival in patients living in 4 major metropolitan areas who had sickle cell disease (SCD) and COVID-19 to inform best approaches to prevention and care. Data were collected at baseline and during the clinical course in SCD patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in four COVID-19 epicenters. Patients were followed up posthospital discharge for up to 3 months.

The Sydney AFF Score: A Simple Tool to Distinguish Females Presenting With Atypical Femur Fractures Versus Typical Femur Fractures.

Atypical femur fractures (AFF) are a rare but serious complication of long-term bisphosphonate use. Although clearly defined by ASBMR criteria, a proportion of patients with AFFs may go unrecognized and the use of qualitative fracture criteria may lead to uncertainty in AFF diagnosis, with significant therapeutic implications. A score that rapidly and accurately identifies AFFs among subtrochanteric femur fractures using quantitative, measurable parameters is needed.

A challenging diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma with osteosarcomatous differentiation metastasizing to bone.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an insidious primary neoplasm of the pleura that can be challenging to diagnose and is commonly considered to be only locally invasive. We present the case of a 74-year-old male who presented with clinical features of MPM but from whom pleural fluid and biopsies initially suggested benign pathology. He later developed diffuse bony metastases and re-examination of pleural biopsies using modern immunohistochemistry and molecular testing revealed a diagnosis of sarcomatoid and desmoplastic MPM with heterologous osteosarcomatous differentiation.
