The limited but recurrent outbreaks of the zoonotic Nipah virus (NiV) infection in humans, its high fatality rate, and the potential virus transmission from human to human make NiV a concerning threat with pandemic potential. There are no licensed vaccines to prevent infection and disease. A recombinant Hendra virus soluble G glycoprotein vaccine (HeV-sG-V) candidate was recently tested in a Phase I clinical trial.

Cardiac rehabilitation, a multi-component intervention designed to mitigate the impact of cardiovascular disease, often underutilises low-intensity resistance exercise despite its potential benefits. This narrative review critically examines the mechanistic and clinical evidence supporting the incorporation of low-intensity resistance exercise into cardiac rehabilitation programmes. Research indicates that low-intensity resistance exercise induces hypertrophic adaptations by maximising muscle fibre activation through the size principle, effectively recruiting larger motor units as it approaches maximal effort.

People living with HIV (PLWH) can achieve VS through timely HIV care continuum (HCC) engagement (ie, diagnosis, linkage to HIV care, retention in care and adherence to prescribed treatment regimens). Black populations have poorer VS, suboptimal HCC engagement and higher levels of racism-related mistrust. This paper assessed the state of the evidence linking sub-optimal HCC engagement to racism among US Black populations.

Purpose: The SORG-MLA was developed to predict 90-day and 1-year postoperative survival in patients with spinal metastatic disease who underwent surgery between 2000 and 2016. Due to the constant changes in treatment methods, it is essential to perform temporal validation with a recent patient population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to validate the Skeletal Oncology Research Group machine learning algorithms (SORG-MLA) using a contemporary patient cohort.

Background: Heterotopic ossification (HO) can form after amputation and may cause pain and functional impairment. We aimed to describe the prevalence of HO in a civilian population of transtibial amputees. We hypothesized that the decreased rate of symptomatic neuroma following active nerve surgery (Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) or Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI)) may subsequently lead to a lower prevalence of HO compared to passive nerve surgery (i.

Marburg virus (MARV) has caused sporadic outbreaks of severe hemorrhagic fever in Africa in humans and nonhuman primates (NHPs) and has the potential to be used as a biological weapon. Currently, there are no licensed vaccines or therapeutics to respond to outbreaks or deliberate misuse. Vaccine and therapeutic efficacy testing against MARV requires animal models that accurately mimic human disease.

Filoviruses, including Ebola and Marburg viruses, have caused periodic outbreaks of severe hemorrhagic disease in humans and nonhuman primates (NHP), resulting in major public health emergencies primarily in endemic areas. Filovirus disease has also been exported to developed nations, where it has been equally disruptive. There are four ebolaviruses (Ebola virus, Sudan virus, Bundibugyo virus, and Taï Forest virus) and two marburgviruses [Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus] known to cause disease in humans, yet vaccines and therapeutics have only been approved for Ebola virus.

Various animal models have been established to gain a better understanding of the pathogenesis of Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus (RAVV), and to develop medical countermeasures (MCMs) against them. Of these models, which range from rodents to nonhuman primates (NHPs), the macaque model most closely mimics the severe disease displayed in humans. Nevertheless, rodent models mirror many key aspects of human infection and are frequently used for the initial assessment of experimental vaccines and treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to determine the prevalence of distal biceps tendinopathy (DBT) in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients who underwent elbow MRIs.
  • Out of 1,180 MRIs analyzed, 23% showed signal changes, but only 10% were diagnosed with tendinopathy, with many being incidental findings.
  • While the prevalence of DBT tendinopathy increases with age, there's no significant link between age and incidental cases, suggesting that older adults may experience more symptomatic issues rather than just incidental findings.

Background: Surveillance for heart transplant rejection by endomyocardial biopsy is invasive and may yield false negatives. T1 and T2 mapping from cardiac magnetic resonance can demonstrate elevations with rejection. We sought to evaluate longitudinal changes in T1 and T2 mapping in pediatric patients with heart transplant.

Background And Aims: Acute severe ulcerative colitis (UC) (ASUC) requiring hospitalization affects up to 1 in 4 patients with UC. There is a paucity of prospective and multicenter clinical cohorts to study treatment trends and predictors of disease outcomes. Here, we conduct a US-based multicenter prospective clinical cohort of ASUC to study predictors of the need for medical rescue therapy and colectomy.

Background: Children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may have diminished serologic response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination and increased risk for subsequent severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. We sought to describe outcomes among those who developed SARS-CoV-2 infection following vaccination, characterize SARS-CoV-2 antibodies 1 year post-vaccination, and identify factors associated with durable serologic response.

Methods: We recruited children with IBD who received ≥2 doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and prospectively collected data on (1) demographics, IBD characteristics, and therapy and (2) SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, testing, and infection symptoms.

How phenotypic diversity originates and persists within populations are classic puzzles in evolutionary biology. While balanced polymorphisms segregate within many species, it remains rare for both the genetic basis and the selective forces to be known, leading to an incomplete understanding of many classes of traits under balancing selection. Here, we uncover the genetic architecture of a balanced sexual mimicry polymorphism and identify behavioral mechanisms that may be involved in its maintenance in the swordtail fish Xiphophorus birchmanni.

In an era of growing environmental, socioeconomic, and market uncertainties, understanding the adaptive strategies of smallholder farmers is paramount for sustainable agricultural productivity and environmental management efforts. We adopted a mixed-methods approach to investigate the adaptive strategies of smallholders in Northwest Cambodia. Our methodology included downscaled climate projections to project future climate conditions and scenarios, household surveys to collect detailed demographic and socioeconomic data, crop monitoring and record-keeping to gather data on productivity and profitability, and semi-structured interviews to obtain qualitative insights on constraints and adaptation.

Purpose: This pilot study investigated the functional outcomes after ischemic preconditioning (IPC) in high-level para-athletes with spinal-cord injury.

Methods: Nine athletes completed 2 handgrip exercise trials (an isometric hold to failure at 60% maximal voluntary contraction [ISO] and a progressive, intermittent handgrip to failure [INT]), preceded by either IPC (220 mm Hg) or sham (20 mm Hg) for six 5-minute periods, in a repeated-measures, crossover design.

Results: Although small performance improvements in time to task failure were observed in the ISO (∼5%) and INT (∼8%) IPC conditions, which are similar to those reported elsewhere, no statistical influence was observed (ISO-IPC, 74.

We report the first double-differential neutrino-argon cross section measurement made simultaneously for final states with and without protons for the inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interaction channel. The proton kinematics of this channel are further explored with a differential cross section measurement as a function of the leading proton's kinetic energy that extends across the detection threshold. These measurements use data collected with the MicroBooNE detector from 6.

Background: High-grade gliomas including glioblastoma (GBM) and diffuse midline gliomas (DMG) represent the most lethal and aggressive brain cancers where current treatment modalities offer limited efficacy. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapies have emerged as a promising strategy, boasting tumor-specific targeting and the unique ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. However, the effective clinical application hinges on the optimal choice of antigen, with a limited number, currently under investigation.

Natural kinesin motors are tethered to their cargoes via short C-terminal or N-terminal linkers, whose docking against the core motor domain generates directional force. It remains unclear whether linker docking is the only process contributing directional force or whether linker docking is coupled to and amplifies an underlying, more fundamental force-generating mechanical cycle of the kinesin motor domain. Here, we show that kinesin motor domains tethered via double-stranded DNAs (dsDNAs) attached to surface loops drive robust microtubule (MT) gliding.

Evidence supports that people identifying as a sexual or gender minority (SGMs) experience minority-related stress resulting from discrimination or expectations of prejudice, and that this is associated with increased mental and physical health problems compared to cisgender heterosexuals. However, the biological mechanisms driving minority-related stress impacts remain unknown, including the role of the gut microbiome. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the relationship between SGM status and gut microbiome health among young adults attending a 4-year university.
