Cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) is a critical contributor to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) mortality. Thus, there is an urgent need for new strategies to mitigate PDAC-associated cachexia; and the exploration of dietary interventions is a critical component. We previously observed that a ketogenic diet (KD) combined with gemcitabine enhances overall survival in the autochthonous LSL-KrasG12D/+; LSL-Trp53 R172H/+; Pdx1-Cre (KPC) mouse model.

Background: Faecal incontinence significantly affects a patient's quality of life, and limited research has been conducted into effective interventions that are specific to residential aged care. Australian and New Zealand prevalence data indicate a general faecal incontinence rate of 12-13% in older adults and up to 50% in residential aged care.

Objective: The objective of this article is to describe the suggested initial investigation and management of faecal incontinence in older adults residing in residential aged care.

Background: Short-term medical missions (STMMs) are a well-established means of providing health care to the developing world. Despite over 250 million dollars and thousands of volunteer hours dedicated to STMMs, there is a lack of standardized evaluation to assess patient safety, quality control, and mission impact. The objective of this project is to design and implement an assessment tool that defines objective parameters of quality of care as identified by STMMs.

Flat medicine? Exploring trends in the globalization of health care.

Trailing nearly every other industry, health care is finally globalizing. Highly trained and experienced expatriate health care professionals are returning to their home countries from training in the West or are staying home to work in newly developed corporate health care delivery systems that can compete quite favorably with less-than-perfect providers in Europe and North America. In turn, these health care systems are attracting patients from around the world who are interested in exploring high-quality, lower-cost health care alternatives.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy: a case report.

We present the case of a 49-year-old Caucasian woman exhibiting symptoms of an acute coronary syndrome while hospitalized for alcohol withdrawal. Echocardiography demonstrated an unusual pattern of left ventricular dysfunction in which all segments except the base become akinetic, known as takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

Privately funded quality health care in India: a sustainable and equitable model.

Explaining oropharyngeal dysphagia after unilateral hemispheric stroke.

Background: Oropharyngeal dysphagia occurs in up to a third of patients presenting with a unilateral hemiplegic stroke, yet its neurophysiological basis remains unknown. To explore the relation between cortical motor function of swallowing and oropharyngeal dysphagia, mylohyoid, pharyngeal, and thenar electromyographic responses to stimulation of affected and unaffected hemispheres were recorded in dysphagic and non-dysphagic patients.

Methods: The 20 patients studied had unilateral hemispheric stroke confirmed by computed tomography.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is still a relatively new technology that has recently achieved recognition after initial clinical disappointment in the late 1970s. At present, it is considered standard therapy for the full-term infant with PPHN who fails CMV and extraordinary, heroic therapy for older children and adults with ARF or cardiac failure, or both. Currently, the emphasis is on developing new technologies for increasing safety and effectiveness.

Cardiotoxicity during treatment of severe childhood asthma.

We prospectively evaluated 20 patient admissions for severe exacerbation of childhood asthma at The Children's Hospital, Boston, to detect evidence of cardiotoxicity. Evidence of cardiotoxicity was found in all six patient admissions for which isoproterenol infusion was utilized. This included marked elevation of serum creatine phosphokinase isoenzyme (CPK-MB) levels and electrocardiogram abnormalities consistent with transient myocardial ischemia.
