During fetal life the right valve of the sinus venosus directs oxygenated blood from the inferior vena cava to the left atrium through the foramen ovale, until the regression of the right valve which usually occurs within the 15th week of pregnancy. Incomplete regression of the right venous valve in varying degrees can lead to different types of remnants such as the Eustachian valve, the Chiari Network and Cor Triatriatum Dexter. Prenatal diagnosis of remnants of right venous valve has only rarely been reported in the literature.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the frequency of lower extremity lymphedema in patients with early-stage endometrial cancer who had laparoscopic surgery using the sentinel lymph node (SLN) approach.
  • A total of 239 patients were surveyed, revealing that those who underwent hysterectomy with SLN had a significantly lower lymphedema rate (21.4%) compared to those who had systematic lymphadenectomy (44.6%).
  • The results support the use of SLN mapping in laparoscopic surgery for endometrial cancer, as it reduces the risk of lymphatic complications while maintaining diagnostic effectiveness.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic led to several needed containment measures that conditioned the onset of depressive, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress symptoms in the population. These symptoms, especially if not diagnosed and treated, can also occur in patients undergoing medical care or surgery, with a high impact on people's lives and causing low adherence to treatment. The study evaluates whether the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worsened the onset of post-surgical distress and symptoms of anxiety and depression in a population undergoing hysterectomy for benign disease during the pandemic era, comparing it with a population with the same characteristics but recruited before COVID-19.

Background And Methods: Uterine leiomyosarcomas (uLMS) are rare malignant tumors, often incidentally discovered, with an estimated annual incidence of five cases per one million women in the United States. This study aimed to compare the oncological outcomes of two groups of patients: those with uLMS incidentally found during surgery and those who underwent surgery due to suspected or confirmed uLMS before the procedure. The study assessed patients who had undergone hysterectomy and were diagnosed with stage I uLMS at a tertiary gynecologic oncology referral center in Italy between January 2000 and December 2019.

Introduction: methylated () epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a recently defined and not well-investigated subset of neoplasms. To date, no studies have focused on the transcriptional profiles of cases, and, as a matter of fact, we still do not know if this subset of EOCs is similar, and to what extent, to mutated () cases.

Methods: We compared a group of 17 cases against 10 cases using a subset of carefully selected 17 EOCs as a control group.

The efficacy and safety of a cervical ripening balloon (CRB) in women with a previous cesarean section (CS) and unfavorable Bishop score are still controversial. A retrospective cohort study was performed across six tertiary hospitals from 2015 to 2019. Women with one previous transverse CS, singleton cephalic term pregnancy and BS < 6 were included if submitted to labor induction with a CRB.

Objectives: Laparoscopic subtotal hysterectomy (LSH) is a possible treatment for patients with benign uterine disease. Once the hysterectomy has been completed, morcellation and extraction of the corpus uteri is a crucial step of the procedure. We here present a case series to evaluate the feasibility of the in-bag transvaginal specimen retrieval following LSH.

Background: Vacuum extraction is the most common choice to assist vaginal delivery, but there are still concerns regarding the neonatal injuries it may cause. This study aimed to evaluate the rate of intracranial injuries assessed by cranial ultrasound (cUS) among infants born by vacuum extraction, and the relationship with maternal and perinatal factors.

Methods: This was a single-center retrospective study carried out in a level-3 neonatal unit.

Introduction: To date, there is no robust evidence suggesting whether transvaginal retrieval (TVSR) or port-site specimen retrieval (PSSR) after laparoscopic myomectomy (LM) may lead to better surgical outcomes. Considering this element, we aimed to compare surgical outcomes of TVSR versus PSSR after LM.

Methods: A search (PROSPERO ID: CRD42020176490) of international databases, from 1980 to 2020, in English language, was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a major cause of congenital disabilities, prompting a study to assess the rate and risk factors of congenital CMV (cCMV) infection in newborns of immune women.
  • The study involved two parts: the first part analyzed the prevalence of cCMV without any hygiene recommendations, with findings showing a cCMV rate of 0.19% among 9,661 newborns tested.
  • Results indicated that specific factors like twin pregnancies and maternal health conditions are linked to higher cCMV risks, but overall, the low cCMV rate in immune women suggests serological screening might be important to identify those at lower risk for future pregnancies.
