Unlabelled: The scourge of food waste (FW) is a significant global challenge, impacting climate change, food security, and the sustainability of agrifood systems. The objective of this paper is to identify, analyze, and understand the factors influencing household consumer behaviors in Romania regarding the reduction of FW. Three primary research objectives were established to assess food consumption behaviors within households, to explore attitudes toward FW, and to understand the motivations for reducing FW along with the measures implemented by households to address this issue.

Shiga Toxin-Producing Strains from Romania: A Whole Genome-Based Description.

The zoonotic Shiga toxin-producing (STEC) group is unanimously regarded as exceptionally hazardous for humans. This study aimed to provide a genomic perspective on the STEC recovered sporadically from humans and have a foundation of internationally comparable data. Fifty clinical STEC isolates, representing the culture-confirmed infections reported by the STEC Reference Laboratory between 2016 and 2023, were subjected to whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis and sequences were interpreted using both commercial and public free bioinformatics tools.

Dynamics of RAS Mutations in Liquid Biopsies in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Patients-Case Series and Literature Review.

Liquid biopsies can accurately identify molecular alterations in patients with colorectal cancer with high concordance with tissue analysis and shorter turnaround times. Circulating tumor (ct) DNA analysis can be used for diagnosing and monitoring tumor evolution in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who are treated with EGFR inhibitors. In this article, we reported three clinical cases to illustrate the relevance of RAS mutations identified in ctDNA samples of patients with wild-type metastatic colorectal cancer who received an EGFR inhibitor plus chemotherapy as first-line treatment.

Serum Caspase-3 Levels as a Predictive Molecular Biomarker for Acute Ischemic Stroke.

Caspases are key players in the apoptotic process and have been found to contribute to the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases, including neurological disorders such as ischemic stroke. This study aimed to investigate the serum levels of Caspase-3 in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and in control patients without ischemic events. Moreover, we explored any potential associations with the clinical outcomes of AIS.

Despite these efforts, vaccines continue to be the safest and most effective means of combating such viruses. Yet, vaccine hesitancy persists, posing a significant public health concern, particularly with the emergence of new COVID-19 variants.

Multimodal Treatment of Metastatic Rectal Cancer in a Young Patient: Case Report and Literature Review.

Metastatic colorectal cancer requires a multidisciplinary and individualized approach. Herein, we reported the case of a young woman diagnosed with metastatic rectal cancer who received an individualized multimodal treatment strategy that resulted in a remarkable survival. There were several particular aspects of this case, such as the early onset of the disease, the successful use of conversion therapy, the application of liquid biopsy to guide treatment, and the specific nature of the bone metastasis.

Novel Photothermal Graphene-Based Hydrogels in Biomedical Applications.

In the last decade, photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted tremendous attention because it is non-invasive, shows high efficiency and antibacterial activity, and minimizes drug side effects. Previous studies demonstrated that PTT can effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria and promotes cell proliferation, accelerating wound healing and tissue regeneration. Among different NIR-responsive biomaterials, graphene-based hydrogels with photothermal properties are considered as the best candidates for biomedical applications, due to their excellent properties.

Madelung's Disease Evolving to Liposarcoma: An Uncommon Encounter.

(1) Background: Madelung's disease-known also as Benign Symmetric Adenolipomatosis (BSA) or Multiple Symmetric Lipomatosis (MSL), is a rare subcutaneous tissue disease characterized by the proliferation of non-encapsulated fat tissue with mature adipocytes. Patients develop symmetrical fatty deposits of varying sizes, (located particularly around the neck, shoulders, upper and middle back, arms, abdomen, and thighs), having clinical, esthetic, and psychiatric repercussions. (2) Methods: We report a case diagnosed with BSA upon admission to the Neurological and Internal Medicine Departments of the Emergency Clinical Hospital of Galati.

Prognostic Value of Circulating Cell-Free DNA Concentration and Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio in Patients with Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Circulating cell-free DNA (ccfDNA) quantity correlates with the clinical characteristics and prognosis of various cancer types. We investigated whether ccfDNA levels and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) have prognostic value in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Peripheral blood was collected from 82 patients with PDAC prior to any diagnostic procedure or the administration of chemotherapy.

Thrombomodulin Serum Levels-A Predictable Biomarker for the Acute Onset of Ischemic Stroke.

The early diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) can be challenging in cases presenting with a scarcity of clinical signs, normal cerebral imaging in early stages and a lack of specific serum markers. Thrombomodulin has been shown to be associated with cerebrovascular ischemic events and can be considered an important biomarker for the acute onset of ischemic stroke. In our study, we compared the serum levels of thrombomodulin (sTM) between a relevant patient group of 70 AIS patients and a control group of patients without AIS admitted into the neurology department between June 2022 and May 2023.

Development of gallic acid-loaded ethylcellulose fibers as a potential wound dressing material.

In this study, novel fibers were designed based on ethylcellulose (EC), loaded with different concentrations of gallic acid (GA) using the electrospinning technique, in order to investigate the potential of these materials as wound dressings. The chemical structure and morphology, along with the antimicrobial and biocompatibility tests of the EC_GA fibers were investigated. To observe the chemical interactions between the components, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used.

The aim of the present study was to obtain antimicrobial dressings from bacterial cellulose loaded with nutmeg and of fir needle essential oils. The attractive properties of BC, such as biocompatibility, good physicochemical and mechanical stability, and high water absorption, led to the choice of this material to be used as a support. Essential oils have been added to provide antimicrobial properties to these dressings.

The Survival Benefit of Repetitive Ultrasound-Guided Liver Resections in the Absence of Chemotherapy for Multiple Colorectal Recurrent Liver Metastases.

We present the case of a 54-year-old female patient, diagnosed with stage IV rectal cancer, with multiple (12) synchronous liver metastases, the largest of 10 cm in diameter, bilobar distributed. The operative management consisted in simultaneous ultra-low robotic anterior resection with coloanal anastomosis (protected by ileostomy) and multiple ultrasound-guided non-anatomical liver resections (in open approach). The patient was unable to follow neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy due to the systemic side effects.

Real-Life Results of Palliative Chemotherapy in Metastatic Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of FOLFIRINOX(FFX), gemcitabine-based regimens (GB), and gemcitabine monotherapy (Gem) in patients with metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (mPDAC).

Methods: This is a retrospective study that included 83 patients with mPDAC treated with first-line chemotherapy (L1) with either FFX, GB or Gem between 2015 and 2017. Interactions of the protein tyrosine phosphatase PTPN3 with viral and cellular partners through its PDZ domain: insights into structural determinants and phosphatase activity.

The human protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 3 (PTPN3) is a phosphatase containing a PDZ (PSD-95/Dlg/ZO-1) domain that has been found to play both tumor-suppressive and tumor-promoting roles in various cancers, despite limited knowledge of its cellular partners and signaling functions. Notably, the high-risk genital human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18 and the hepatitis B virus (HBV) target the PDZ domain of PTPN3 through PDZ-binding motifs (PBMs) in their E6 and HBc proteins respectively. It is clinically defined by headaches, consciousness disorders, seizures and visual disturbances. Early recognition (clinical and imaging) can lead to appropriate general measures to correct the underlying cause of PRES.

Anxiety and depression in patients with inactive inflammatory bowel disease: The role of fatigue and health-related quality of life.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic conditions characterized by a remitting-relapsing course. Patients with IBD have an impaired quality of life and are more often affected by anxiety and depression. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and severity of anxiety and depression in patients with inactive IBD, and to identify factors associated with them.
