Article Synopsis
  • The study compares the effectiveness of guided self-help and 10-session cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-T) against other psychological therapies for treating non-underweight binge/purge eating disorders in emerging adults.
  • Data from 1,097 participants at 54 eating disorder services showed no significant differences in baseline symptoms across treatment types, but all treatments led to significant symptom improvements over time.
  • The findings suggest that guided self-help and CBT-T are effective options and highlight the need for further research on their utilization in early intervention settings.

Background Ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous (USGPIV) placement is more successful, comfortable, and longer lasting than traditional landmark-based IVs. While many hospitals have protocols for becoming credentialed in this skill, there is little information available about the USGPIV success rate during and after training. Objectives This pilot study aimed to quantify USGPIV attempts by emergency nurses undergoing USGPIV training and to determine if 10 successful USGPIVs predicted success in the next USGPIV.

Background: Electronic health records (EHRs) have the potential to be used to produce detailed disease burden estimates. In this study we created disease estimates using national EHR for three high burden conditions, compared estimates between linked and unlinked datasets and produced stratified estimates by age, sex, ethnicity, socio-economic deprivation and geographical region.

Methods: EHRs containing primary care (Clinical Practice Research Datalink), secondary care (Hospital Episode Statistics) and mortality records (Office for National Statistics) were used.

There have been at least 7 separate randomised controlled trials published between 2011 and 2023 that have examined primary care for nonspecific low back pain informed by the STarT Back approach to stratified care based on risk prediction, compared with care not informed by this approach. The results, across 4 countries, have been contrasting-some demonstrating effectiveness and/or efficiency of this approach, others finding no benefits over comparison interventions. This review considers possible explanations for the differences, particularly whether this is related to poor predictive performance of the STarT Back risk-prediction tool or to variable degrees of success in implementing the whole STarT Back approach (subgrouping and matching treatments to predicted risk of poor outcomes) in different healthcare systems.

Purpose: Social challenges are common in patients with eating disorders (ED). The presence of autistic characteristics often exacerbates social difficulties within this group, potentially affecting treatment outcomes. This study investigates the communication preferences, challenges, dislikes, and support needs of patients with ED, both with and without autistic traits, using a communication passport in a national inpatient ED service.

Purpose: Purpose:There are a variety of commercially made ultrasound training phantoms available for educational purposes. A new concept in phantoms is presented that utilises a low-cost method to create a reusable phantom.

Methods: A closed electric circuit was combined with insulating material to create a novel phantom that can be used to practise needle tracking under ultrasound guidance on repeated occasions.

Background: Social isolation, loneliness and difficulties in relationships are often described as a core feature of eating disorders. Based on the experimental research, we have designed one-off workshops for patients in inpatients and day care services and evaluated its acceptability and effectiveness using feedback questionnaires.

Methods: This naturalistic project is an evaluation of multiple positive communication workshops.

This study used cluster analysis to explore clinically relevant subgroups of adult patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). Patients were clustered based on their body mass index (BMI), eating disorder symptomatology, anxiety and depression symptoms and autistic characteristics. The difference between clusters in work and social functioning, duration of illness, bingeing and purging behaviour, previous hospitalisations and number of comorbidities was also investigated.

As electric vehicles become more widely used, there is a higher demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and hence a greater incentive to find better ways to recycle these at their end-of-life (EOL). This work focuses on the process of reclamation and re-use of cathode material from LIBs. Black mass containing mixed LiMnO and NiCoAlO from a Nissan Leaf pouch cell are recovered via two different recycling routes, shredding or disassembly.

Objectives: The serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) is an ultrasound-guided compartment block; limited data suggest that it can decrease pain in patients with rib fractures or chest wall pain. We sought to determine the effect of SAPB on pain and incentive spirometry (IS) maximal vital capacity in adult patients with rib fractures.

Methods: We enrolled a prospective sample of adult patients with at least two unilateral rib fractures who were being admitted for pain control.

As point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) invades medical specialties, more students covet earlier ultrasound (US) training programs in medical school. Determining the optimal placement and format in the curriculum remains a challenge. This study uses student perceptions and confidence in interpreting and acquiring images to evaluate the effectiveness of an US curriculum and assesses their performance on US content.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the most diagnosed gynecological cancers in women. Due to the lack of effective early stage screening, women are more often diagnosed at an advanced stage; therefore, it is associated with poor patient outcomes. There are a lack of tools to identify patients at the highest risk of developing this cancer.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) represent an important component of the tumour microenvironment and are implicated in disease progression. Two outstanding questions in cancer biology are how CAFs arise and how they might be targeted therapeutically. The calcium signal also has an important role in tumorigenesis.

The heterogeneity of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) is not well characterized in brain metastasis. To address this, we performed a targeted analysis of immune-cell subsets in brain metastasis tissues to test immunosuppressive routes involved in brain metastasis. We performed multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF), using commercially available validated antibodies on formalin-fixed paraffin embedded whole sections.

Background And Purpose: The objectives were to assess the feasibility and validity of using markers of dementia-related health as indicators of dementia progression in primary care, by assessing the frequency with which they are recorded and by testing the hypothesis that they are associated with recognised outcomes of dementia. The markers, in 13 domains, were derived previously through literature review, expert consensus, and analysis of regional primary care records.

Methods: The study population consisted of patients with a recorded dementia diagnosis in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, a UK primary care database linked to secondary care records.
