Nurses play an active role in fostering engagement of oncological patients, and, therefore, adopting effective communication and interpersonal skills is crucial. However, the nurse-patient relationship and communication strategies are frequently undervalued. This scoping review aims to address this gap with a twofold objective: (1) to explore the existing literature to identify communication strategies and relational styles employed by nurses to promote patient engagement in non-pediatric oncology patients; (2) to assess current knowledge on this topic to determine the need for future research.

Rational: Critically ill surgical patients pose one of the greatest challenges in achieving nutritional goals. Several published papers have demonstrated clear benefits when nutrition support (NS) is managed by a multidisciplinary nutrition support team (NST). We hypothesized that implementing a NST in a surgical intensive care unit (ICU) would increase the number of patients achieving their nutritional goals.

Pregnant patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS) and chronic intestinal failure (CIF) can successfully reach to term their pregnancies while on parenteral nutrition (PN) but with high rates of complications. The combination of rehabilitation surgery, combined with the use of novel treatment with enterohormones, especially semisynthetic glucagon-like peptide 2 (sGLP-2), has increased the chances to achieve intestinal sufficiency. Here, we report the case of a 33-year-old female with SBS/CIF (anatomy type 2), weaned off PN using sGLP-2 for 3.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the aging rates and longevity of ectothermic tetrapods, specifically nonavian reptiles and amphibians, using data from 107 wild populations across 77 species.
  • It investigates how factors like thermoregulatory methods, environmental temperature, and life history strategies influence demographic aging among these animals.
  • The findings reveal that ectotherms exhibit more diverse aging rates than endotherms and show instances of negligible aging, highlighting the importance of studying these species to better understand the evolution of aging.

Background And Aims: The case-mix of patients with intestinal failure due to short bowel syndrome (SBS-IF) can differ among centres and may also be affected by the timeframe of data collection. Therefore, the ESPEN international multicenter cross-sectional survey was analyzed to compare the characteristics of SBS-IF cohorts collected within the same timeframe in different countries.

Methods: The study included 1880 adult SBS-IF patients collected in 2015 by 65 centres from 22 countries.

Background: Teduglutide, a semisynthetic analogue of glucagon-like peptide-2 (sGLP-2), increases intestinal absorption of fluids and nutrients, reducing the need for parenteral nutrition (PN). This report aims to describe our experience with sGLP-2 in a cohort of adult patients with short-bowel syndrome.

Methods: This is a prospective observational study on adult patients initially evaluated in our specialized intestinal rehabilitation program that received sGLP-2 from June 2014 to March 2020.

The differences in life-history traits and processes between organisms living in the same or different populations contribute to their ecological and evolutionary dynamics. We developed mixed-effect model formulations of the popular size-at-age von Bertalanffy and Gompertz growth functions to estimate individual and group variation in body growth, using as a model system four freshwater fish populations, where tagged individuals were sampled for more than 10 years. We used the software Template Model Builder to estimate the parameters of the mixed-effect growth models.

Background And Aim: No marker to categorise the severity of chronic intestinal failure (CIF) has been developed. A 1-year international survey was carried out to investigate whether the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism clinical classification of CIF, based on the type and volume of the intravenous supplementation (IVS), could be an indicator of CIF severity.

Methods: At baseline, participating home parenteral nutrition (HPN) centres enrolled all adults with ongoing CIF due to non-malignant disease; demographic data, body mass index, CIF mechanism, underlying disease, HPN duration and IVS category were recorded for each patient.

Intraspecific trait variability (ITV) maintains functional diversity in populations and communities, and plays a crucial role in ecological and evolutionary processes such as trophic cascades or speciation. Furthermore, functional variation within a species and its populations can help buffer against harmful environmental changes. Trait variability within species can be observed from differences among populations, and between- and within individuals.

Background: Short-bowel syndrome remains the primary cause of intestinal failure (IF) in adult patients. We aim to report the long-term results of medical and surgical rehabilitation in a cohort of patients with type III IF (III-IF) and develop a formula to predict parenteral nutrition (PN) independency.

Methods: We used a retrospective analysis of a prospective database for III-IF patients undergoing autologous gastrointestinal reconstruction surgery (AGIRS) from March 2006 to August 2018.

The hypothesis that the effects of heterozygosity vary with environmental conditions was tested using six populations of marble trout Salmo marmoratus from western Slovenia as a model system. The hypotheses tested were: stronger effects of heterozygosity on survival in populations characterized by low average survival; no effects of heterozygosity on probability of surviving flash floods owing to their largely non-selective effects across traits; stronger effects of heterozygosity on survival for fish born after floods than fish born before. A significant effect of heterozygosity on survival was found in populations characterized by low average survival.
