Autistic people may be distinguishable from non-autistic individuals in the content and modality of their thoughts. Such differences potentially underlie both psychological vulnerability and strengths, motivating the need to better understand autistic thought patterns. In non-clinical undergraduates, a recent study found that autistic traits were associated with thinking more in words than images.

The mind is embodied, and this is relevant to mental health and psychiatric illness. Interoception is the body-to-brain axis of sensory information flow and its representation at the neural and psychological levels. Interoception is the purported basis for motivation and emotion, and as an inescapable stream of information about the health and functioning of the whole organism, it is proposed to be the foundation to the conscious unitary sense of self.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how schizophrenia (SZ) affects the sense of agency (SoA) by examining the role of cardiac interoception, which is the brain's awareness of internal bodily signals.
  • Forty-two individuals with SZ and twenty-nine healthy controls performed a task measuring SoA while their heartbeats were recorded, revealing that cardiac signals affected SoA differently between the groups.
  • Results showed that cardiac systole decreased SoA in those with SZ, especially in patients with severe hallucinations, indicating that impaired integration of bodily signals may worsen symptoms and disrupt self-representation.

Background: Rates of loneliness are substantially higher among autistic compared with nonautistic individuals. This observation refutes the persistent stereotype that autistic individuals are not motivated to seek meaningful social relationships. More plausibly, social environments systematically exclude people with higher levels of sensory differences, impeding on opportunities for autistic individuals to form meaningful relationships.

  • Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women, often leading to surgery for persistent pain, but symptoms frequently recur post-operation, creating uncertainty about the most effective hormonal treatments.
  • A study was conducted across 34 UK hospitals to compare the effectiveness of long-acting progestogen therapy with the combined oral contraceptive pill in preventing pain recurrence and improving quality of life after surgery.
  • Results showed both treatment options reduced pain compared to pre-surgery levels, but no significant difference in effectiveness was found between the two, although fewer follow-up procedures were needed for those on long-acting progestogen.

Context: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is common and debilitating, but the precise endometrial mechanisms causing increased menstrual blood loss (MBL) remain undefined. We have previously identified a role for hypoxia in endometrial repair following progesterone withdrawal.

Objective: As hypoxia inducible factor 2 alpha (HIF2A) is known to alter vascular function in other tissues, we hypothesised that endometrial HIF2A is involved in pre-menstrual optimisation of endometrial function during the secretory phase to limit MBL.

Emotional feelings are putatively ascribed to central representation of bodily states in the context of expectation and uncertainty in both internal state and external world. Neurodivergent people are more likely to experience co-occurring mental health challenges, although mechanistic insights underpinning this association are scarce. We therefore undertook a study to test whether imprecise processing of proprioceptive error signals may underlie the connection between neurodivergence and emotional dysregulation.

Ordinary sensations from inside the body are important causes and consequences of our affective states and behaviour, yet the roles of neurotransmitters in interoceptive processing have been unclear. With a within-subjects design, this experiment tested the impacts of acute increases of endogenous extracellular serotonin on the neural processing of attended internal sensations and the links of these effects to anxiety using a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) (20 mg CITALOPRAM) and a PLACEBO. Twenty-one healthy volunteers (fourteen female, mean age 23.

The question of whether physical pain and vicarious pain have some shared neural substrates is unresolved. Recent research has argued that physical and vicarious pain are represented by dissociable multivariate brain patterns by creating biomarkers for physical pain (Neurologic Pain Signature, NPS) and vicarious pain (Vicarious Pain Signature, VPS), respectively. In the current research, the NPS and two versions of the VPS were applied to three fMRI datasets (one new, two published) relating to vicarious pain which focused on between-subject differences in vicarious pain (Datasets 1 and 3) and within-subject manipulations of perspective taking (Dataset 2).

The Access Consortium New Active Substance Work-Sharing Initiative, or "Access" for simplicity, allows regulatory authorities (RAs) of the Access Consortium countries to jointly review applications for the registration of new active substances or for new indications. Using a survey developed by the pharmaceutical industry trade associations of the five Access Consortium countries-Australia, Canada, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom (UK)-this study gathered insights into the perceptions and experiences of the Access pathway held by affiliates of pharmaceutical companies. Understanding industry perceptions of Access is important for the success of the initiative, as participation is voluntary.

A redundancy gain occurs when perceptually identical stimuli are presented together, resulting in quicker categorization of these paired stimuli than lone stimuli. Similar effects have been reported for paired stimuli within the same conceptual category, particularly if the category is self-related. We recruited 528 individuals across three related studies to investigate whether, during perceptual and conceptual redundancy, such self-bias effects on foreground stimuli are modulated by natural versus urban backgrounds.

Attention bias modification training aims to alter attentional deployment to symptom-relevant emotionally salient stimuli. Such training has therapeutic applications in the management of disorders including anxiety, depression, addiction and chronic pain. In emotional reactions, attentional biases interact with autonomically-mediated changes in bodily arousal putatively underpinning affective feeling states.

  • High Ventilation Breathwork (HVB) is a breathing technique used historically to alleviate psychological distress and may have clinical applications for psychiatric disorders.
  • The paper examines the effects of HVB on both subjective experiences and the workings of the central and autonomic nervous systems, identifying its potential therapeutic mechanisms and safety.
  • Preliminary evidence suggests HVB might be beneficial for conditions like trauma and mood disorders, highlighting the need for more research to fully understand its mechanisms and to conduct clinical trials.

Article Synopsis
  • Theoretical perspectives in the affective sciences have increased in variety rather than converging due to differing beliefs about the nature and function of human emotions.
  • A teleological principle is proposed to create a unified approach by viewing human affective phenomena as algorithms that adapt to comfort or monitor these adaptations.
  • This framework aims to organize existing theories and inspire new research in the field, leading to a more integrated understanding of human affectivity through the concept of the Human Affectome.

Depression and heart failure frequently occur together, symptoms overlap and the prognosis is worsened. Both conditions share biopsychosocial risk factors and are accompanied by behavioural/lifestyle, neurohormonal, inflammatory and autonomic changes that are implicated aetiologically. Depression has been conceptualized as a decompensated response to allostatic overload, wherein adaptive psychological, behavioural and physiological responses to chronic and/or severe stress, become unsustainable.

Many people with Tourette syndrome are able to volitionally suppress tics, under certain circumstances. To understand better the neural mechanisms that underlie this ability, we used functional magnetic resonance neuroimaging to track regional brain activity during performance of an intentional inhibition task. On some trials, Tourette syndrome and comparison participants internally chose to make or withhold a motor action (a button press), while on other trials, they followed 'Go' and 'NoGo' instructions to make or withhold the same action.

Objective: Although interoceptive abnormality in patients with functional seizure (FSs) has been demonstrated using explicit tasks, implicit measurements of interoception such as the effect of interoception on perceptual brain processes have not been investigated. It has been shown that perception is normally modulated by interoceptive signals related to the different phases (systole vs diastole) of the cardiac cycle (cardiac modulation effect). Given our previous findings using explicit measures of interoception, we hypothesized that cardiac modulation would be impaired in FSs.

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is common, often debilitating, and may affect over 50% of reproductive-aged women and girls. Whereas AUB is a collection of symptoms that include intermenstrual bleeding and abnormalities in period duration, cycle length, and regularity, it is heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) that is most contributory to iron deficiency and related anemia. It is apparent that AUB, in general, and HMB, in particular, remain underrecognized and underreported.

Study Question: Does application of an unbiased method for analysis of magnetic resonance (MR) images reveal any effect on uterine or fibroid volume from treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) with three 12-week courses of the selective progesterone receptor modulator ulipristal acetate (SPRM-UPA)?

Summary Answer: Application of an unbiased method for analysis of MR images showed that treatment of HMB with SPRM-UPA was not associated with a significant reduction in the volume of the uterus or in the volume of uterine fibroids.

What Is Known Already: SPRM-UPA shows therapeutic efficacy for treating HMB. However, the mechanism of action (MoA) is not well understood and there have been mixed reports, using potentially biased methodology, regarding whether SPRM-UPA has an effect on the volume of the uterus and fibroids.
