Background: Childhood trauma history has frequently been linked to eating disorders (EDs); nevertheless, the scientific literature calls for extending knowledge regarding mediators between EDs and childhood trauma. This study explored whether ED symptoms and early maladaptive schemas were more severe in ED patients with severe childhood trauma than in ED patients with no/mild childhood trauma and whether early maladaptive schemas mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and ED symptom severity.

Methods: Data were extracted from the Regional Centre for Eating Disorders registry at the University Hospital of Verona.

Migrant mental health is a pressing public health issue with wide-ranging implications. Many randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been conducted in this population to assess the effects of psychosocial interventions. However, the available evidence is characterized by controversy and fragmentation, with studies focusing on different migrant populations, interventions, outcomes, delivery modalities and settings.

Objectives: Fatigue is a common comorbidity in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), often reported also by those in clinical remission or with moderate disease activity. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of fatigue in patients with axSPA, and to investigate possible non-disease-related determinants, with a special focus on depression.

Methods: Patients with axSpA were assessed using the Chalder's Fatigue Questionnaire (CFQ) for fatigue, and the depression subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-D) for depression.

Article Synopsis
  • Some people with schizophrenia and first-episode psychosis have low levels of vitamin D, but it's unclear if this is due to their illness or their lifestyle choices.
  • This study looked at how a genetic score related to vitamin D levels impacts the symptoms in people with first-episode psychosis.
  • The results showed that lower vitamin D may lead to less motivation and social interaction, suggesting that getting outside and being social could help improve symptoms for these individuals.

Psychosocial interventions play a key role in addressing mental health and substance use needs for children and adolescents living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While research efforts have primarily focused on their effectiveness, implementation outcomes also require examining. We conducted a systematic review of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods studies (PROSPERO: CRD42022335997) to synthesize the literature on implementation outcomes for psychosocial interventions for children and adolescents in LMICs.

Serotonergic and dopaminergic systems are involved in the regulation of mood and reactivity to psychological stress. This study explores, in a sample of first episode psychosis (FEP) patients, whether more severe depressive symptoms were found in those who: (1) experienced a major stressful event in the 6 months preceding illness onset; and (2) were homozygous for the COMT Val158 allele or carrying the S allele of 5-HTTLPR. A total of 186 FEP patients recruited were assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD) for depressive symptoms.

Purpose: The correct placement of people with mental disorders in psychiatric residential facilities (PRF) and the monitoring of their progress in these facilities is a critical issue that has not been fully settled in the Italian system. To overcome this problem, some validated instruments are used, which mostly assess the patient's functioning/disability, while no instruments have been set up to assess functional autonomy in patients with a psychiatric disorder residents in RFs. The Verona Department of Mental Health has created the Monitoring of the Path of Rehabilitation (MPR) Form with the aim of assessing the functional autonomy of patients to admit and monitor them adequately in their residential pathways.

Language production has often been described as impaired in psychiatric diseases such as in psychosis. Nevertheless, little is known about the characteristics of linguistic difficulties and their relation with other cognitive domains in patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP), either affective or non-affective. To deepen our comprehension of linguistic profile in FEP, 133 patients with FEP (95 non-affective, FEP-NA; 38 affective, FEP-A) and 133 healthy controls (HC) were assessed with a narrative discourse task.

Objectives: Few data are available on the role of emotional distress as a possible mediator of the relationship between coping strategies and the Patient Global Assessment (PGA). This study aims to investigate, in a large cohort of patients affected by RA, the relationship between specific copying strategies and PGA, and the role of emotional distress as a mediator.

Methods: A total of 490 patients with RA completed a set of standardized assessments including the self-reported PGA, the Coping Orientation to the Problems Experienced (COPE-NVI) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).

Background: People with mental disorders are far more likely to be unemployed than the general population. Two internationally recognized, evidence-based models of interventions for employment for people with severe mental health problems are Individual Placement Support and the Clubhouse. In Italy, a common model is the 'social enterprise' (SE), which is a programme run by non-profit organisations that help individuals with disabilities to be employed.

Understanding and improving the outcomes of psychosis remains a major challenge for clinical research. Obstetric complications (OCs) as a risk factor for schizophrenia (SZ) have been investigated as a potential predictor of outcomes in relation to illness severity and poorer treatment outcome, but there are less reports on first episode psychosis (FEP) patients. We test whether OCs, collected in a cohort of FEP patients, can predict illness course and psychopathology severity after 2 years from the onset.

Background: Depression is common in people with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory conditions. The co-existence of depression and NCDs may affect health behaviours, compliance with treatment, physiological factors, and quality of life. This in turn is associated with worse outcomes for both conditions.
