Sex determination (SD) shows huge variation among fish and a high evolutionary rate, as illustrated by the Pleuronectiformes (flatfishes). This order is characterized by its adaptation to demersal life, compact genomes and diversity of SD mechanisms. Here, we assembled the Solea senegalensis genome, a flatfish of great commercial value, into 82 contigs (614 Mb) combining long- and short-read sequencing, which were next scaffolded using a highly dense genetic map (28,838 markers, 21 linkage groups), representing 98.

Dementia caregiver burdens predict overnight hospitalization and hospice utilization.

Objectives: To determine sociodemographics and caregiver burdens associated with overnight hospitalization, hospice utilization, and hospitalization frequency among persons with dementia (PWD).

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of PWD ( = 899) of the National Health and Aging Trends Study linked to the National Study of Caregiving. Logistic and proportional odds regression determined the effects of caregiver burdens on overnight hospitalization, hospice use, and hospitalization frequency.

COVID-19 Experiences of Relatives of Nursing Home Residents.

Nursing home residents comprise a disproportionate share of coronavirus-related deaths in the United States. Additionally, lockdown restrictions disrupted residents' relationships with their family members to an unknown extent. This study explored family members' perceived family role and interactions with nursing home residents and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Improving Student Perceptions of Simulation Effectiveness With Co-Facilitation From Prebriefing Through Debriefing.

Co-facilitation (combining presence and expertise of clinical faculty and simulationists during all stages of simulation) presents an opportunity to improve student perceptions of effectiveness. Using a retrospective before and after comparison, data on students' perceptions were collected from baccalaureate nursing students in clinical courses after each simulation experience. Mean differences in Simulation Effectiveness Tool-Modified scores for pre- and post-implementation were compared, as well as scores between levels of students.

Family Planning Research in African Immigrant and Refugee Women: A Scoping Review.

Introduction: African immigrants are a vulnerable population who are seldom seen in the literature, however, the scant research available reports that they experience increased challenges when making family planning decisions. A robust understanding of their specific family planning practices is imperative to providing appropriate, culturally congruent care. Considering this disparity, a scoping review was conducted to synthesize empirical knowledge and identify gaps in the literature around family planning in African immigrant populations in the United States.

Development of a Longitudinal Dataset of Persons With Dementia and Their Caregivers Through End-of-Life: A Statistical Analysis System Algorithm for Joining National Health and Aging Trends Study/National Study of Caregiving.

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) are terminal conditions impacting families and caregivers, particularly at end-of-life. Longitudinal, secondary data analyses present opportunities for insight into dementia caregiving and decision-making over time; however, joining complex datasets and preparing them for analysis poses many challenges. To describe an approach to linking national survey data of older adults with their primary caregivers to build a prospective, longitudinal dataset, and to share the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) coding statement algorithms with other researchers.

Binding modes of L35 to alpha- and beta-semihemoglobins: structural insights into the inequivalence of alpha- and beta-subunits of hemoglobin.

It has been thought for several years that the greatly lowered oxygen affinity, high cooperativity, and heterotropic modulation displayed by tetrameric human hemoglobin (Hb) was an exclusive result of the assembly of high affinity alpha(1)beta(1) dimers into alpha(2)beta(2) tetramers. However, in recent times, it has been shown that alpha- and beta-semihemoglobins, namely alpha(heme)beta(apo) and alpha(apo)beta(heme), which are dimers of Hb characterized by a high affinity for oxygen and lack of cooperativity do respond to effectors such as 2-[4-(3,5-dichlorophenylureido) phenoxy]-2-methylpropionic acid (L35), a bezafibrate (BZF) related compound, by decreasing the ligand affinity to a considerable extent (between 60- and 130-fold). In order to shed some light on the structural basis of this phenomenon, we have developed a binding mode of L35 to semihemoglobins through docking analysis using the program GRID.

Structure, function and molecular adaptations of haemoglobins of the polar cartilaginous fish Bathyraja eatonii and Raja hyperborea.

Cartilaginous fish are very ancient organisms. In the Antarctic sea, the modern chondrichthyan genera are poorly represented, with only three species of sharks and eight species of skates; the paucity of chondrichthyans is probably an ecological consequence of unusual trophic or habitat conditions in the Southern Ocean. In the Arctic, there are 26 species belonging to the class Chondrichthyes.

Structure and function of the Gondwanian hemoglobin of Pseudaphritis urvillii, a primitive notothenioid fish of temperate latitudes.

The suborder Notothenioidei dominates the Antarctic ichthyofauna. The non-Antarctic monotypic family Pseudaphritidae is one of the most primitive families. The characterization of the oxygen-transport system of euryhaline Pseudaphritis urvillii is herewith reported.

From the Arctic to fetal life: physiological importance and structural basis of an 'additional' chloride-binding site in haemoglobin.

Haemoglobins from mammals of sub-Arctic and Arctic species, as well as fetal human Hb, are all characterized by a significantly lower Delta H of oxygenation compared with the majority of mammalian haemoglobins from temperate species (exceptions are represented by some cold-resistant species, such as cow, horse and pig). This has been interpreted as an adaptive mechanism of great importance from a physiological point of view. To date, the molecular basis of this thermodynamic characteristic is still not known.

The effect of anions on azide binding to myoglobin: an unusual functional modulation.

The effect of increasing concentrations of several anions on the azide (N(-)(3)) binding properties of sperm whale and horse ferric myoglobin has been studied. Surprisingly, a number of anions may act as heterotropic effectors, decreasing the affinity of myoglobins for N(-)(3), in the following order: ClO(-)(4)=I(-)>Br(-)>Cl(-) and SO(2-)(4), which mirrors the increase in their charge density. The largest effects were measured using ClO(-)(4) and I(-), which produce a 4-fold and 8-fold reduction of the N(-)(3) binding affinity in horse and sperm whale myoglobins, respectively.
