Staphylococcal enterotoxins are one of the most important causative agents of food poisoning. These molecules function as both gastrointestinal toxins and superantigens (SAgs) which can simultaneously bind MHC-II and T cell receptor leading to a non-specific polyclonal T cell activation and massive proinflammatory cytokine release. Common symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea; however, in more severe cases, systemic dissemination may result in toxic shock syndrome and can be lethal in a few hours.

We studied the degradation of mixtures of o-cresol, m-cresol, and p-cresol, by Pseudomonas putida isolated from natural sources, and the application of this degradation to the depuration and detoxification of synthetic and industrial wastewater. Biodegradation assays were performed in batch and continuous-flow fixed-bed aerobic reactors. Biodegradation was evaluated by cresol determination using micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography, UV spectrophotometry, and chemical oxygen demand (COD).

The use of solid-phase extraction coupled on-line to capillary electrophoresis using electrospray mass spectrometry detection (SPE-CE-ESI-MS) is described for the analysis of peptides in dilute solutions. A SPE microcartridge or analyte concentrator containing C(18) derivatized silica particles as the extraction sorbent was easily constructed near the inlet of the separation capillary using commercially available materials. The reversed-phase sorbent selectively retained the target peptides, enabling large volumes of the sample to be introduced (>100muL).
