Understanding Women's Awareness and Access to Preconception Health Care in a Rural Population: A Cross Sectional Study.

Despite evidence of the benefits of preconception health care (PCHC), little is known about awareness and access to PCHC for rural, reproductive-aged women. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of PCHC conversations between rural reproductive-age women and health care providers, PCHC interventions received in the past year, and ascertain predictors of PCHC conversations and interventions. Women (n = 868; 18-45 years) completed a questionnaire including reproductive history, health care services utilization, and interest in PCHC.

Evaluation of school tobacco-free policies in a rural Northern Plains state.

Background: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has called for tobacco-free school (TFS) policies. In South Dakota (SD), a rural state with a large American Indian population, collaboration between state agencies focused on development and dissemination of a model TFS policy in 2008. This study explored the current status of TFS policies in statewide SD school districts.

Evaluation of a student-led interprofessional innovative health promotion model for an underserved population with diabetes: a pilot project.

Interprofessional education seeks to encourage different health professions to interact and learn together during their training process which will eventually lead to collaborative healthcare practices and improved care for patients. This study determined whether student understanding of diabetes management and the role of health professionals in diabetes care improved after the implementation of an interprofessional health promotion program. Sixty-three students from five health professions led six educational sessions concentrating on critical components of diabetes management.

Maternal-perinatal morbidity and mortality associated with adolescent pregnancy in Latin America: Cross-sectional study.

Objective: This study was undertaken to determine whether adolescent pregnancy is associated with increased risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Study Design: We studied 854,377 Latin American women who were younger than 25 years during 1985 through 2003 using information recorded in the Perinatal Information System database of the Latin American Center for Perinatology and Human Development, Montevideo, Uruguay. Adjusted odds ratios were obtained through logistic regression analysis.
