Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary liver tumor, with 905 677 diagnosed cases and 830 180 deaths, in 2020 worldwide. In Argentina, it accounts for the 9th cause of death for cancer in men and the 10th in women. Unlike other highly-prevalent tumors, scientific evidence for most therapeutic options is limited mainly to small cohorts and retrospective studies.

Venous thromboembolic disease is the most common preventable cause of hospital death. Despite the existence of evidence of the usefulness of thromboprophylaxis and recommendations, adherence by physicians to them is highly variable, and frequently suboptimal. The objective was to evaluate the change in the adequacy of thromboprophylaxis before and after an intervention on thromboprophylaxis with multifaceted strategies for physicians.

Stress-induced hyperglycemia is a phenomenon that occurs typically in patients hospitalized for acute disease and resolves spontaneously after regression of the acute illness. However, it can also occur in diabetes patients, a fact that is sometimes overlooked. It is thus important to make a proper diabetes diagnosis if hospitalized patients with episodes of hyperglycemia with and without diabetes are studied.

Background: Intracranial aneurysms are acquired abnormal vascular dilations. The most dangerous complication of a cerebral aneurysm is its rupture, with a high rate of mortality. This study aimed to determine whether there is an association between anatomic variations in the circle of Willis and ruptured aneurysms in the anterior and posterior communicating arteries.

Introduction: Hip fracture in the elderly is a frequent problem. Chronic treatment with anticoagulants is common in these patients, and may delay surgery.

Objectives: To compare time to surgery, hospital stay, in-hospital and 90 days complications between anticoagulated (A) and non-anticoagulated (NA) groups.

Introduction: Hospitalization represents a major factor that may precipitate the loss of functional status and the cascade into dependence. The main objective of our study was to determine the effect of functional status measured before hospital admission on survival at one year after hospitalization in elderly patients.

Methods: Prospective cohort study of adult patients (over 65 years of age) admitted to either the general ward or intensive Care units (ICU) of a tertiary teaching hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Background: Non-attendance to scheduled medical appointments in outpatient clinics is a problem that affects patient health and health-care systems.

Objective: Evaluate association of non-attendance to scheduled appointments in outpatient clinics and Emergency Department (ED) visits, hospitalizations and mortality.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of outpatients enrolled in 2015 to 2016 in the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires HMO with over five scheduled appointments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the rates of diabetes and mortality among hospitalized patients after discharge, distinguishing between those with stress hyperglycemia (SH) and normal glucose levels (NG).
  • Out of 4,865 non-diabetic adults, 884 had SH and 3,981 had NG, with a follow-up period averaging 1.83 years.
  • Results showed a significantly higher yearly incidence of diabetes in SH patients (7.39%) compared to NG patients (1.59%), while mortality rates were similar, suggesting that death influences the likelihood of developing diabetes.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute calculous cholecystitis (ACC) is a problem caused by gallstones that can make people very sick, and the best treatment is often surgery called laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC).
  • The CHART study tested whether giving antibiotics after surgery helped prevent infections, with some patients getting the medicine and others getting a placebo (fake medicine).
  • The results showed that there was no big difference in infection rates after surgery between those who got antibiotics and those who didn't, suggesting that antibiotics might not be needed after this kind of surgery.

Background: Adult liver recipients (ALR) differ from the general population with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) as they exhibit: reconstructed biliary anatomy, recurrent hospitalizations, poor clinical condition and are subjected to immunosuppression. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors associated with PLA in ALR and to analyze the management experience of these patients.

Methods: Between 1996 and 2016, 879 adult patients underwent liver transplantation (LT), 26 of whom developed PLA.

Background: Crowding in Emergency Departments (ED), results from the imbalance between the simultaneous demand for health care and the ability of the system to respond. The NEDOCS scale (National Emergency Department Crowding Scale) measures the degree of crowding in an ED.

Aim: To describe ED Crowding characteristics, using the NEDOCS scale, in an Argentinean hospital.

Instrumental activities scales allow the assessment of the functional status of the elderly; however, those currently used have gender bias and insufficient cross-cultural validation. The main objectives of this study were to perform the cross-cultural validation of the modified "VIDA: Daily living of the elderly questionnaire", created in Spain, into the Spanish spoken language in the City of Buenos Aires, and to evaluate its telephonic reliability. The secondary objective was to assess the concurrent validity of the modified VIDA questionnaire with the Lawton and Brody scale.

Background: Intra-articular corticosteroid injection is a common therapy for adhesive capsulitis, but there is a lack of prospective randomized controlled studies analyzing the efficacy of single injections applied blindly to accelerate improvement in pain and function.

Hypothesis: In patients with adhesive capsulitis, a single intra-articular corticosteroid injection without image control applied before the beginning of a physical therapy program will accelerate pain relief and recovery of function compared with oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and physical therapy.

Study Design: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1.
