Article Synopsis
  • Acute lobar nephritis (ALN) is an inflammatory bacterial infection of the kidneys that usually affects one or more lobes and falls between uncomplicated pyelonephritis and intrarenal abscess in severity.
  • ALN can be tricky to diagnose due to vague symptoms and lab results, leading to it being likely underdiagnosed.
  • The gold standard for diagnosing ALN is a CT scan, although MRI can be used to reduce radiation; the treatment includes at least three weeks of intravenous antibiotics.
