Purpose: Myopia, a leading cause of correctable visual impairment, is projected to affect nearly 50% of the global population by 2050, posing a significant public health challenge. Understanding its prevalence and associated factors, particularly in children, is crucial for devising prevention and intervention strategies. This study aims to determine the proportion of myopia in school-aged children in Portugal and to examine the correlation between myopia occurrence and various environmental and genetic factors.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAge-related hearing loss (ARHL) or Presbycusis is the most frequent sensory deficiency in older adults and is associated with comorbidities, such as falls, cognitive decline, and frailty. Frailty is related to poor health outcomes in old age. Recent research suggested that ARHL may be a potentially modifiable risk factor for frailty, although inconclusive.

This study aims to determine the levels of secretory IgA against the S1 domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike (SIgA-S1) in older people living in nursing homes (NH) and to investigate the differences in baseline characteristics, severity of COVID-19, duration of symptoms, 30-day mortality, and reinfection according to the levels of SIgA-S1.
Methods: In this multicentre longitudinal study, conducted in two NHs attended in coordination with a hospital-based Geriatric team, 305 residents (87.
Background: Xenoestrogens are synthetic or naturally occurring chemicals capable of altering the endocrine system of humans and animals owing to their molecular similarity to endogenous hormones. There is limited data regarding their effects on women´s health. Chronic exposure to xenoestrogens can promote the development of estrogen-related diseases.

The clinical benefits of a boost with high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) after conventional fractionation is supported by a large body of evidence. However, few studies have described its outcomes after a hypofractionated scheme.

This study aims to evaluate the short-term efficacy of a new design of ophthalmic lens with asymmetric myopic peripheral defocus (MPDL) on myopia progression in children compared to a control group wearing a single-vision lens (SVL).
Methods: Children aged 5 to 12 with myopia up to -0.
Post-COVID-19 interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a new entity that frequently causes pulmonary fibrosis and can become chronic. We performed a single-center parallel-group open-label pilot randomized clinical trial to investigate the efficacy and safety of cyclosporine A (CsA) in the development of ILD in the medium term among patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia. Patients were randomized 1:1 to receive CsA plus standard of care or standard of care alone.

Noteworthy advances in AI algorithms and large language models (LLM) have led to the development of natural generative language (NGL) systems such as ChatGPT. Although these LLM can simulate human conversations and generate content in real time, they face challenges related to the topicality and accuracy of the information they generate.

The risk of herpes zoster reactivation is increased in immunocompromised patients, especially in those with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) on Janus kinase inhibitor (JAKi) treatment. The recombinant subunit herpes zoster vaccine (RZV) is a non-live vaccine, recently approved for this subgroup of patients, which shows high rates of vaccine effectiveness, with few adverse effects reported in clinical trials.

Background: Many therapies are available to treat low-risk superficial basal cell carcinoma (lr-sBCC), which may complicate the shared decision-making (SDM) process.
Objective: To assess the SDM process of patients and physicians when deciding lr-sBCC therapy as well as the factors that may influence the SDM process.
Methods: A prospective, multicenter cohort study was conducted over 18 months, from October 2018 to April 2020, in 3 tertiary university hospitals and 1 private hospital.
Aim: To translate and culturally adapt the FRAIL scale into Spanish and perform a preliminary test of diagnostic accuracy in patients admitted to intensive care units.
Design: Cross-sectional diagnostic study.
Methods: Five intensive care units (ICU) in Spain were participated.
Background And Objectives: Orthogeriatric management with clinical pathways (CP) in hip fracture (HF) has been shown to be superior to other models. We studied whether updating the CP, through prioritization of admission and surgery, improvement in the prevention and treatment of delirium, management of anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents and the use of perioperative peripheral nerve block, modifies surgical delay, stay, readmissions, mortality, suffering delirium and functional status at discharge.
Material And Method: A retrospective observational study of unicenter cohorts of 468 patients with HF, 220 from 2016 (old VC) and 248 from 2019 (new VC).
This study sought to examine the correlation between left ventricular (LV) myocardial feature tracking (FT) and deep learning-based strain (DLS) analysis in the diagnostic (CMRd) and follow-up (CMRf) cardiac magnetic resonance imaging of patients with acute myocarditis. The retrospective study included 17 patients with acute myocarditis and 20 healthy controls. The CMRd took place within 14 days of symptom onset, while the CMRf took place at least 2 months after the event.

This study aimed to assess the occurrence of blood parasites in nocturnal raptors (Strigiformes order) and their effect on hematological parameters. A total of 134 blood samples were collected during a four-year period for hematological analysis and hemoparasite detection and quantification by microscopical examination of the samples.

Methods: We performed an observational cohort study of all consecutive adult patients with brain injury admitted to ICU in 8 years. To estimate the optimal cut-off point of the age associated with unfavorable outcomes (mRS 3-6), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were used.
A systematic review was conducted to assess the cost of ketosis in dairy cattle, and to elucidate how ketosis cost is estimated in each of the studies. Scientific papers addressing the economic impact of ketosis in dairy cows were identified through a search in 4 databases (Medline, ISI Web of Science, CAB Abstracts, and Agricola). The literature search was conducted with no restrictions on the date of study publication, publication type, or language.

Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted in patients ≥ 70 years admitted to the acute care setting (ACS). Feasibility and prevalence of frailty were assessed by FRAIL, Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS), hand grip strength (HGS) and the Spanish Frailty-VIG.
Background: Lymphopenia is a major concern in MS patients treated with dimethyl-fumarate (DMF) as it increases the risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. A pronounced reduction in absolute lymphocyte counts (ALCs) early after treatment initiation has been suggested to be associated with the occurrence of lymphopenia thereafter.
Objectives: To identify risk factors for DMF-induced lymphopenia and evaluate whether the degree of decrease in the ALCs three months after initiation of DMF treatment is a predictor of the subsequent development of lymphopenia.

Myopia is a public health problem, with estimations that 50% of the world population will be myopic by 2050. Some environmental factors, such as time spent outdoors, doing near work, and using digital devices, influence the development of myopia in children. Home confinement in Spain has increased these risk factors, so this study aims to investigate the impact of home confinement during the COVID-19 outbreak in the vision of school-aged children; Methods: A cross-sectional study in children between 5 and 7 years old that completed a visual screening and a questionnaire about their lifestyles at opticians in Spain in September and October of 2019 and 2020.
