Objective: To assess the morbidity profile and identify factors associated with frailty syndrome in post-COVID-19 elderly patients treated at the only Reference Center for Elderly Health Care in northern Minas Gerais.

Methods: This is a case series study, utilizing the Clinical-Functional Vulnerability Index-20 (CFVI-20) and Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) to characterize and evaluate the health condition of the group. To define the variables associated with frailty, a multivariate analysis was conducted.

A lab-made screen-printed electrode based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate modified with a hybrid film containing gold nanoparticles-decorated graphene (AuNPs-GRA/PET-SPE) was employed for the voltammetric determination of Roxarsone (ROX) in chicken purge and river water samples. The electrode exhibited an increased electroactive area and enhanced charge transfer due to the nanostructured matrix. The electrochemical determination involved a preconcentration approach with a reduction step of ROX at a constant potential of -0.

The ability of plants to recover after stressful events is crucial for resuming growth and development and is a key trait when studying stress tolerance. However, there is a lack of information on the physiological responses and the time required to restore homeostasis after the stress experience. This study aimed to (i) enhance understanding of soybean photosynthesis performance during saline waterlogging and (ii) investigate the effects of this combined stress during the reoxygenation and recovery period.

Article Synopsis
  • Population aging increases the prevalence of cognitive disorders like dementia and Alzheimer's, creating urgent needs for effective therapies to combat these issues.
  • A study on nanoencapsulated ferulic acid (FA-Nc) showed it improved memory and reduced anxiety in rats experiencing cognitive impairments due to induced oxidative stress.
  • Nanoencapsulation enhances drug delivery to the brain, potentially allowing lower doses of medication to be used, which may reduce side effects while boosting therapeutic effects against neurodegenerative diseases.

A rare disease is that with a low prevalence in the population. However, it is estimated that there are between 6,000 and 8,000 different types of rare diseases in the world and, generally, they are incurable and deadly. Machado-Joseph's disease (MJD) is one of these cases; of genetic origin, autosomal dominant, with a high chance of transmission between generations and without curative treatment.

Priming enables plants to respond more promptly, minimise damage, and survive subsequent stress events. Here, we aimed to assess the efficacy of priming and cross-priming in mitigating the stress caused by waterlogging and/or dehydration in soybeans (Glycine max ). Soybean plants were cultivated in a greenhouse in plastic pots in which soil moisture was maintained at pot capacity through irrigation.

Objective: This study evaluated the influence of melatonin supplementation on tissue's response of endodontic sealers in Wistar rats.

Methodology: Forty-eight rats received subcutaneous implants of four polyethylene tubes: one empty (control) and three filled with endodontic sealers (AH Plus, Endofill and Sealapex). Half of the animals were supplemented with melatonin (ME) and the remaining treated with water (WA) for 15 days before the implantation until euthanasia, forming the groups: control-WA, AH Plus-WA, Endofill-WA, Sealapex-WA, Control-ME, AH Plus-ME, Endofill-ME and Sealapex-ME.

Soil waterlogging and drought correspond to contrasting water extremes resulting in plant dehydration. Dehydration in response to waterlogging occurs due to impairments to root water transport, but no previous study has addressed whether limitations to water transport occur beyond this organ or whether dehydration alone can explain shoot impairments. Using common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) as a model species, we report that waterlogging also impairs water transport in leaves and stems.

Snakebite accidents, neglected tropical diseases per the WHO, pose a significant public health threat due to their severity and frequency. Envenomation by genus snakes leads to severe manifestations due to proteolytic enzymes. While the antibothropic serum produced by the Butantan Institute saves lives, its efficacy is limited as it fails to neutralize certain serine proteases.

The gut microbiota and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) affect tumor responses to anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) immune checkpoint blockade. Reprogramming TAM by either blocking or deleting the macrophage receptor triggering receptor on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) attenuates tumor growth, and lack of functional TREM2 enhances tumor elimination by anti-PD-1. Here, we found that anti-PD-1 treatment combined with TREM2 deficiency in mice induces proinflammatory programs in intestinal macrophages and a concomitant expansion of in the gut microbiota.

Background: The polymerase chain reaction of upper respiratory tract swab samples was established as the gold standard procedure for diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID pandemic. However, saliva collection has attracted attention as an alternative diagnostic collection method. The goal of this study was to compare the use of saliva and nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) samples for the detection of SARS-CoV-2.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of inhibitors of the fractalkine pathway in hyperalgesia in inflammatory and neuropathic orofacial pain in male rats and the morphological changes in microglia and satellite glial cells (SGCs). Rats were submitted to zymosan-induced arthritis of the temporomandibular joint or infraorbital nerve constriction, and treated intrathecally with a P X antagonist, a cathepsin S inhibitor or a p-38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor. Mechanical hyperalgesia was evaluated 4 and 6 h following arthritis induction or 7 and 14 days following nerve ligation.

The treatment of severe musculoskeletal injuries, such as loss of bone tissue and consolidation disorders, requires bone transplantation, and the success of this bone reconstruction depends on the grafts transplant's osteogenic, osteoconductive, and osteoinductive properties. Although the gold standard is autograft, it is limited by availability, morbidity, and infection risk. Despite their low capacity for osteoinduction and osteogenesis, decellularized bone allografts have been used in the search for alternative therapeutic strategies to improve bone regeneration.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to test the hypothesis that fluoride treatment can prevent dental erosion on fluorotic enamel of different severities. It followed a 3×2 factorial design, considering a) fluorosis severity: sound (TF0, Thylstrup-Fejerskov Index), mild (TF1-2), moderate (TF3-4); and b) fluoride treatment: 0 (negative control) and 1150ppmF. Human molars with the three fluorosis severities (n=16, each) were selected and randomly assigned to the two fluoride treatments (n=8).

Article Synopsis
  • Saline and wet environments cause significant stress to most plants, leading to decreased growth and yield due to osmotic, ionic, and oxidative challenges.
  • Halophytes are specially adapted plants that manage these stresses through mechanisms like ion regulation, energy maintenance, and antioxidants, allowing them to thrive in harsh conditions.
  • Understanding how halophytes function can help in developing resilient crops, which is essential for coping with the impacts of climate change and improving agricultural productivity in challenging environments.

Dental hard tissue conditions can be of pre- or post-eruptive nature, such as enamel fluorosis and erosive tooth wear (ETW), respectively. Dental enamel fluorosis is caused by the chronic and excessive intake of fluoride during enamel development, leading to increased fluoride concentration and increased porosity. ETW has become a common clinical condition and often impairs dental function and aesthetics.
