Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated the link between Doppler indices of the ophthalmic artery and negative outcomes for newborns in pregnant women with preeclampsia (PE) using data collected from 110 patients in southeastern Brazil.
  • - Researchers measured various ophthalmic parameters and tracked multiple neonatal outcomes, such as neonatal death and low birth weight, but found no significant relationship between Doppler results and these outcomes.
  • - The findings suggest that while ophthalmic artery Doppler can help assess maternal health, it does not independently predict adverse outcomes for newborns in cases of severe preeclampsia.

The role of wound protectors in laparoscopic surgeries is highly controversial in the literature. Some studies demonstrate their benefit in reducing the rate of surgical site infections; however, these results are not reproducible across all procedures. In addition to protecting the operative wound, these devices can be used at sites of surgical specimen extraction in laparoscopic procedures.

Aquatic contaminants and infectious diseases are among the major drivers of global amphibian declines. However, the interaction of these factors is poorly explored and could better explain the amphibian crisis. We exposed males and females of the Brazilian Cururu Toad, Rhinella icterica, to an environmentally relevant concentration of the estrogen 17-alpha-ethinylestradiol (an emerging contaminant) and to the chytrid infection (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis), in their combined and isolated forms, and the ecotoxicity was determined by multiple biomarkers: cutaneous, hematological, cardiac, hepatic, and gonadal analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • EGFL7 is a significant gene linked to angiogenesis and cancer growth, particularly in colorectal cancer (CRC), prompting research into its role and potential as a therapeutic target.
  • A study involving 463 CRC patients assessed EGFL7 expression through immunohistochemistry and found that 77.7% had low EGFL7 levels, correlating with increased lymph node spread and vessel invasion but no direct impact on overall survival.
  • In silico analysis identified associations between low EGFL7 expression and higher levels of VEGFR2, along with involvement in critical pathways like VEGF, Rap-1, MAPK, and PI3K/Akt, suggesting that EGFL7 could influence tumor invasiveness and recurrence risk.

In the last decades, the growth of world agricultural activity has significantly contributed to the increased presence of emerging pollutants such as atrazine (ATZ) in aquatic ecosystems. Due to its high stability to the natural or artificial degradation processes, the ATZ environmental remediation by adsorption has been investigated. In this study, a graphitic-porous-carbon- (GPC) based material with magnetic domains was applied to remove ATZ from aqueous solution.

Amphibians have been facing a pandemic caused by the deadly fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Although studies have elucidated cutaneous and homeostatic disturbances, it is still unknown if the hepatic function can be affected or if hepatic effects differ among host species. Thus, we evaluated the effects of an experimental Bd infection on the liver (histopathology and the hepatosomatic index) of 2 anuran species (Xenopus laevis and Physalaemus albonotatus) with different susceptibilities to Bd infection and compared them to uninfected controls.
