: (I) to verify if there are sex differences in respiratory function, respiratory muscle strength, and effort limitation in individuals recovered from severe acute COVID-19 30 months after the initial infection, and (II) to evaluate the influence of length of stay on cardiorespiratory capacity among men and women. : Cross-sectional observational multicentric study with participants from five Brazilian states (São Paulo, Amazonas, Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Brasília). We assessed lung function and respiratory muscle strength by maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximum expiratory pressure (MEP), and cardiorespiratory fitness by cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET).

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined COVID-19 deaths among children and adolescents in Brazil, analyzing data from over 2.8 million symptomatic cases between February 2020 and February 2023.
  • Of the pediatric patients, 4,740 died, with higher fatality rates linked to hospitalization and lack of advanced support, while vaccination was shown to provide significant protection.
  • Key risk factors for increased death rates included younger age, certain ethnicities, specific regions, and existing health conditions, highlighting how social inequities affected outcomes.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the agreement between established tools, such as the Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) and Brazilian version of the Supportive and Palliative Care Indicators Tool (SPICT-BR), and the subjective assessment of palliative care (PC) need using the Surprise Question (SQ) administered by resident physicians. This assessment was conducted among hospitalized patients, with and without cancer, to determine the efficacy of these tools in indicating the need for PC.

Methods: A six-month cross-sectional study in 2019 of medical records of patients hospitalized in a single center in IAMSPE-Brazil.

Background: Central Illustration : Prediction of Peak Oxygen Consumption in Patients with Heart Disease Based on Performance on the Timed Up and Go Test CPET: cardiopulmonary exercise test; TUG: timed up and go test; VO2peak: peak oxygen consumption.

Background: The use of the timed up and go (TUG) test to assess cardiorespiratory fitness in patients with heart disease has not been well defined in the literature.

Objectives: Test the association between TUG and peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), construct an equation based on TUG to predict VO2peak, and determine a cutoff point to estimate VO2peak ≥ 20 mL/kg/min.

Objective: We aimed to describe the action, impact on quality of life, and side effects of perianal nonablative radiofrequency (RF) application in the treatment of anal incontinence (AI) in women.

Methods: This was a pilot, randomized clinical trial conducted between January and October 2016. We enrolled women who consecutively attended the Attention Center of the Pelvic Floor (CAAP) with complaints of AI for more than six months.

We report the long-term outcomes of a case of prenatal gastroschisis repair using a fully percutaneous fetoscopic approach with partial carbon dioxide insufflation. Surgery was performed as an experimental procedure before the scheduled elective birth. The fetal intestines were successfully returned to the abdominal cavity without any fetal or maternal complications.

Background: Flexibility is crucial to the harmonious execution of joint movements. While skeletal muscle dysfunction in patients with HTLV-1 can interfere with mobility, it is unclear whether these patients experience reduced flexibility.

Objective: To evaluate the differences in flexibility between HTLV-1-infected individuals with and without myelopathy compared with uninfected controls.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) corresponds to episodes of complete or partial upper airway obstruction during sleep. The gold standard for diagnosing OSA is polysomnography; however, metabolomics is an innovative and highly sensitive method that seeks to identify and quantify small molecules in biological systems. Identify the metabolites most frequently associated with obstructive sleep apnea in adults.

Introduction: Urinary CD80 has been shown to have good specificity for minimal change disease (MCD) in children. However, the investigation of circulating factors such as soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) as biomarkers of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is quite controversial. The objective of this study was to determine whether urinary CD80 and serum suPAR can be used for the diagnosis of MCD and FSGS, respectively, in the adult population of Brazil.

In 2012, the number of people infected with human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was estimated to be 10 million worldwide. Prevalence varies according to geographic location, ethnic factors, sex, age, populations exposed to risk factors, income, and education, reaching countries with the worst socioeconomic scenarios. There is a need to determine the current global prevalence of HTLV-1 and examine its association with countries' human development index (HDI) to provide data for global health policy.

Introduction: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder in elderly. Although the HIV-positive population have a similar life expectancy when compared to the general population, some factors may interact with immunity conditions and therefore contribute to a worse prognosis.

Objective: This is a review of literature that aims to identify prevalence of insomnia in older HIV-positive patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated acute kidney injury (AKI) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, focusing on predicting the need for kidney replacement therapy (KRT) as a measure of disease severity.
  • - Researchers used a large cohort of 5212 adult patients, employing statistical methods like generalized additive models and LASSO regression to develop a prognostic score named MMCD, identifying four key predictors for KRT.
  • - The MMCD score demonstrated high accuracy in predicting KRT requirements across various cohorts and is accessible via an online risk calculator, potentially aiding healthcare professionals in managing COVID-19 patients.

Brazil is home to the highest absolute number of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1)-infected individuals worldwide; the city of Salvador, Bahia, has the highest prevalence of HTLV-1 infection in Brazil. Due to the complex nature of several diseases associated with this retrovirus, a multidisciplinary health care approach is necessary to care for people living with HTLV-1. The Bahia School of Medicine and Public Health's Integrative Multidisciplinary HTLV Center (CHTLV) has been providing support to people living with HTLV and their families since 2002, striving to ensure physical and mental well-being by addressing biopsychosocial aspects, providing clinical care and follow-up, including to pregnant/postpartum women, as well as comprehensive laboratory diagnostics, psychological therapy, and counseling to family members.

  • Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN) is a serious condition that leads to quick deterioration of kidney function, with vasculitis being a common cause linked to antibodies called ANCA.
  • A 35-year-old woman developed methimazole-induced ANCA-associated vasculitis after being treated for Graves' disease, presenting with severe symptoms including weight loss, fatigue, and alveolar hemorrhage.
  • Following a kidney biopsy that revealed significant damage, she was treated by stopping methimazole and starting immunosuppressive therapy; four years later, her kidney function has significantly improved.

Background: The grading of urinary tract dilatation (UTD) on postnatal sonography is a fundamental step to establish rational management for infants with antenatal hydronephrosis (ANH). The aim of this study was to compare the prediction accuracy of UTD grading systems for relevant clinical outcomes. In addition, we propose a refinement of the UTD classification by adding quantitative measurements and evaluate its impact on accuracy.

Delayed sleep-wake phase disorder (DSWPD) is characterized by sleep onset times, beyond the usual schedules and social conveniences, which potentially impacts on health as well as on school and professional performance. The most common treatment for DSWPD is the light administration (light therapy), through light devices, with or without behavioral instructions. Since there is no consensus in the literature about its efficacy and how it should be processed, this study aims to evaluate the light therapy effectiveness in the delayed sleep-wake phase disorder therapeutics.
