Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluates barriers to care for patients with orofacial clefts by surveying Florida orthodontists and families, and analyzing the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database for age-related factors in alveolar bone grafting (ABG).
  • - Results show that a significant number of orthodontists treat cleft patients, but financial issues like poor reimbursement and reliance on Medicaid create barriers to care, with many patients facing out-of-pocket costs.
  • - The average age for ABG is found to be 10.3 years, with certain funding and residency factors contributing to delays in the procedure, highlighting ongoing challenges in accessing orthodontic care despite legal insurance requirements.

Exposure to gas-phase isocyanic acid (HNCO) has been previously shown to be associated with the development of atherosclerosis, cataracts and rheumatoid arthritis. As such, accurate emission inventories for HNCO are critical for modeling the spatial and temporal distribution of HNCO on a regional and global scale. To date, HNCO emission rates from light duty gasoline vehicles, operated under driving conditions, have not been determined.

Purpose: Pressure algometry (PA) may provide an objective and standardised tool in assessing palpation pain over the tibia. The purpose of this study was to analyse the intra-rater repeatability of PA and to determine whether tibial tenderness in healthy runners differ from runners with medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS).

Methods: Pressure algometry was performed on 20 asymptomatic runners (40 legs) and 9 MTSS patients (14 symptomatic legs) at standardised locations along the medial border of the tibia.

The magnitude and sources of chlorine atoms in marine air remain highly uncertain but have potentially important consequences for air quality in polluted coastal regions. We made continuous measurements of ambient ClNO(2) and Cl(2) concentrations from May 15 to June 8 aboard the Research Vessel Atlantis during the CalNex 2010 field study. In the Los Angeles region, ClNO(2) was more ubiquitous than Cl(2) during most nights of the study period.

Peripheral neuropathies increase with aging, and reactive oxygen species contribute to the symptomatology of neuropathic pain disorders. In this study, we examined age-related differences in the therapeutic efficacy of pre- or post-treatments of the amino-steroidal antioxidant 16-desmethyltirilazad in delaying the onset and/or limiting the duration of tactile-evoked allodynia following the induction of peripheral mononeuropathies in rats. Two different models of nerve injury were utilized to induce allodynia in young and aged rats: (1) the chronic constriction injury (CCI) model of Bennett and Xie [Bennett GJ, Xie Y-K.

The effects of gender and gonadal hormones on nociceptive responses to intraplantar carrageenan in the rat were investigated. A plantar analgesic meter was used to measure carrageenan-induced changes in paw withdrawal latency (PWL) values, and von Frey monofilaments were used to assess changes in paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) values in response to tactile-evoked (mechanical) stimuli. The data revealed that PWL values were significantly greater in gonadally-intact females than in gonadally-intact males, and this response was abolished by surgical gonadectomies.

The effects of aging on the behavioral manifestations of neuropathic and inflammatory pain were investigated using two models of peripheral nerve injury. The left sciatic nerve of young and aged Fischer 344 FBNF1 hybrid rats (4-6 and 24-26 months old, respectively) was ligated using either the chronic constriction injury (CCI) model of Bennett and Xie or the partial sciatic nerve ligation (PSNL) model of Seltzer et al. A plantar analgesic meter was used to assess age-related differences in CCI- or PSNL-induced thermal hyperalgesia, and nerve injury-induced tactile-evoked allodynia was assessed with von Frey filaments.

Substance P (SP) levels in the spinal cords of very old rats are less than the levels in younger rats (Bergman et al., 1996). After injury to a peripheral nerve in young rats, immunoreactivity (ir) to the SP receptor, NK-1 (neurokinin-1), increases in the spinal cord ipsilateral to the injury and the increases are correlated with the development of thermal hyperalgesia (Goff et al.

We used the Bennett and Xie (1988) model of chronic neuropathic pain to study the effect of age on thermal and tactile sensitivity and on astrocytic activation in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord after nerve injury. Fischer 344 FBNF1 hybrid rats in three age groups, 4-6, 14-16, and 24-26 months, were studied. Rats were either unligated (day 0, control) or the left sciatic nerve was loosely ligated to cause a chronic constriction injury (CCI).

A model of peripheral nerve injury was used to study gender differences in the development and progression of chronic constriction injury (CCI)-induced hyperalgesia and allodynia in male and female Fischer 344 FBNF1 hybrid rats. Rats were randomly assigned to one of the following treatment groups: (1) gonadally intact unligated males (male); (2) gonadally intact ligated males (male (CCI)); (3) castrated ligated males (male (CAS/CCI)); (4) gonadally intact unligated females (female); (5) gonadally intact ligated females (female (CCI)); and (6) ovariectomized ligated females (female (OVX/CCI)). A plantar analgesia meter and calibrated von Frey pressure filaments were used as the analgesiometric assays.
