The connections between sarcopenia and various chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes (T2DM), metabolic syndrome (MetS), and liver disease have been highlighted recently. There is also a high occurrence of sarcopenia in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) patients, who are often disregarded. Both experimental and clinical findings suggest a complex, bidirectional relationship between MASLD and sarcopenia.

In this paper, we study the well-posedness properties of a stochastic rotating shallow water system. An inviscid version of this model has first been derived in Holm (Proc R Soc A 471:20140963, 2015) and the noise is chosen according to the Stochastic Advection by Lie Transport theory presented in Holm (Proc R Soc A 471:20140963, 2015). The system is perturbed by noise modulated by a function that is not Lipschitz in the norm where the well-posedness is sought.

Among many iron-based superconductors, isovalently substituted BaFe(AsP) displays, for ≈ 0.3, apart from the quite usual Second Magnetization Peak (SMP) in the field dependence of the critical current density, an unusual peak effect in the temperature dependence of the critical current density in the constant field, which is related to the rhombic-to-square (RST) structural transition of the Bragg vortex glass (BVG). By using multi-harmonic AC susceptibility investigations in three different cooling regimes-field cooling, zero-field cooling, and field cooling with measurements during warming up-we have discovered the existence of a temperature region in which there is a pronounced magnetic memory effect, which we attributed to the direction of the structural transition.

Article Synopsis
  • - PRAME immunohistochemistry is effective for differentiating between malignant thin melanomas and benign melanocytic nevi, with specific staining patterns observed in each.
  • - In the study, 26% of melanomas exhibited strong PRAME staining (4+), while none of the nevi reached this level, indicating a clear distinction in PRAME expression.
  • - Lowering the positivity threshold for PRAME staining can enhance sensitivity for detecting thin melanomas without significantly compromising specificity, suggesting a more nuanced approach may be beneficial.

Background And Aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a significant public health issue, with an increasing incidence and prevalence and a high incidence-to-mortality ratio. The prognosis of HCC depends on two competing factors, tumor burden and underlying liver disease severity, encompassed in the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) classification. To assess HCC staging and the way staging affects eligibility for treatment at the time of the first diagnosis in Romania in the setting of opportunistic diagnosis, in the absence of a national HCC screening policy.

More than half of patients hospitalized with liver cirrhosis are dealing with an episode of acute kidney injury; the most severe pattern is hepatorenal syndrome due to its negative prognosis. The main physiopathology mechanisms involve renal vasoconstriction and systemic inflammation. During the last decade, the definition of hepatorenal syndrome changed, but the validated criteria of diagnosis are still based on the serum creatinine level, which is a biomarker with multiple limitations.

The tumor microenvironment (TME), a complex assembly of cellular and extracellular matrix (ECM) components, plays a crucial role in driving tumor progression, shaping treatment responses, and influencing metastasis. This narrative review focuses on the cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) tumor stroma, highlighting its key constituents and their dynamic contributions. We examine how significant changes within the cSCC ECM-specifically, alterations in fibronectin, hyaluronic acid, laminins, proteoglycans, and collagens-promote cancer progression, metastasis, and drug resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • - Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) and pleomorphic dermal sarcoma (PDS) are rare tumors that require careful differentiation, as PDS can spread while AFX does not infiltrate beyond the dermis.
  • - A study involving 13 patients found that preoperative sonography accurately distinguished between AFX and PDS in all cases, even changing the diagnosis in 3 patients, which was confirmed post-surgery.
  • - Using ultrasound can enhance the clinical diagnosis, speed up treatment, and improve patient care, as AFX can be treated with micrographic surgery while PDS requires more extensive surgical approaches and lymph node evaluation.

Ultrasound and high-frequency ultrasound assessment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer in the pre-therapeutical setting is becoming increasingly popular in the field of dermatosurgery and dermatooncology, as it can provide clinicians with relevant, "in vivo" parameters regarding tumor lateral and depth extension as well as potential locoregional spread, cancelling the need of more extensive imaging methods and avoiding a delay in diagnosis. Furthermore, preoperative sonography and color Doppler can aid in orienting the clinical diagnosis, being able in numerous situations to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions, which require a different therapeutic approach. This preoperative knowledge is of paramount importance for planning an individualized treatment regimen.

Heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is an increasingly frequent form and is estimated to be the dominant form of HF. On the other hand, HFpEF is a syndrome with systemic involvement, and it is characterized by multiple cardiac and extracardiac pathophysiological alterations. The increasing prevalence is currently reaching epidemic levels, thereby making HFpEF one of the greatest challenges facing cardiovascular medicine today.
