The standardization of preoperative imaging in primary hyperparathyroidism is one of the current challenges of endocrine surgery. A correct localization of the hypersecretory gland by neck ultrasound and 99mTc-sestamibi (MIBI) scintigraphy are not sufficiently sensitive in some cases. In recent years, CT-4D, 18F-Fluorocholine PET/CT, and radio-guided parathyroidectomy have come into common use.

ASD tends to run in families, and twin studies suggest a strong genetic basis for the disorder. However, the definition of a genetic profile that indicates a risk for ASD remains unclear.

Bipolar disorder (BPD) affects approximately 2% of the global population. Its clinical course is highly variable and current treatments are not always effective for all patients. Genetic factors play a significant role in BPD and its treatment, although the genetic background appear to be highly heterogeneous.

A method was developed for the determination of tropane alkaloids (TAs), including atropine, scopolamine, anisodamine and homatropine in buckwheat and related products. This work presents an optimised methodology based on QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) extraction procedure followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry for the determination of TAs (atropine, scopolamine, anisodamine and homatropine) in buckwheat samples. The analytical methodology was successfully validated, demonstrating good linearity, low limit of quantification, repeatability (RSD < 15%), inter-day precision (RSD < 19%) and recovery (74-113%).

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are recommended in initial and follow-up patient evaluations yet are imperfect predictors of disease progression. The cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is another potentially useful monitoring tool, although previous studies report conflicting findings regarding which variables are altered by the disease.

Multiple impairments in bottom-up sensory processing and top-down perceptual modulation are implicated in the pathophysiology of these phenomena. In healthy individuals, visual illusions are elicited by illusory figures through parametric manipulations of geometrical configurations, contrast, color, or spatial relationships between stimuli.

The surgical treatment, which involves the debridement and removal of whole infected and necrotic tissue is the standard of care, although it is sometimes unachievable. This may occur, for instance, when the infectious-inflammatory process invades the anterior mediastinum and tenaciously incorporates one or more of vital anatomical structures.

However, the presence of plant toxins, such as tropane alkaloids, constitutes a recent health concern for herbal infusions. Background: There is evidence suggesting a link between weight-related disorders and bipolar disorder (BD). The pathophysiology of the association includes psychological, social and psychotropic treatment-related variables, together with psychiatric comorbidity. Weight changes during BD may influence compliance to the treatment, quality of life and prognosis, and can modulate risk of death associated with, for example, diabetes or cardiovascular disorders.

Polymorphisms in cytochrome P450 genes (CYP450) were demonstrated to play a significant role in antidepressant response and side effects, but their effect in real-world clinical practice is poorly known. We determined the metabolic status of CYP2C19 based on the combination of *1, *2, *3 and *17 alleles extracted from genome-wide data in 1239 patients with MDD, pharmacologically treated in a naturalistic setting.

As a secondary endpoint, we evaluated F-FACBC PET/CT's impact on patients management. Clinical records of 81 patients submitted to F-FACBC PET/CT due to PC BCR in two Italian Nuclear Medicine Units were retrospectively assessed.

Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG-PET) has recently proved to be an important diagnostic tool in this condition since it may highlight brain metabolism abnormalities in a very early stage of the disease. Two main 18F-FDG-PET patterns have been described: the mixed hypermetabolic/hypometabolic and the neurodegenerative one.

Although the underlying causes of ASD are not well described, literature data strongly suggests a genetic component, with a complex inheritance pattern. It has recently been observed that CNVs (copy number variation) may play an important role in ASD manifestation and partially explain the complex heritability of this tract.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that includes a number of neurodevelopmental mental disorders. Recent genetic/genomic investigations have reported an increased prevalence of copy number variations (CNVs) in individuals with autism. Despite the extensive evidence of a genetic component, the genes involved are not known and the background is heterogeneous among subjects.

Despite the efforts, MDD pathogenesis and the mechanisms of antidepressant action are only partially understood. In the last few years, the need of rethinking the classification of depressive disorders and psychiatric disorders, in general, has been suggested, in order to provide a nosology that reflects more closely the biological background associated with disease pathogenesis and its role/significance in treatment.
