Introduction: Limited evidence is currently available relating to research acitivity of medical students training in regional or rural areas.
Objective: To describe medical student interest and participation in research at The University of Queensland Rural Clinical School (UQRCS).
Design: Annual student expression of interest surveys were collated with records of student research participation maintained at UQRCS from 2017-2022.
Anthropogenic chemical pollution has the potential to pose one of the largest environmental threats to humanity, but global understanding of the issue remains fragmented. This article presents a comprehensive perspective of the threat of chemical pollution to humanity, emphasising male fertility, cognitive health and food security. There are serious gaps in our understanding of the scale of the threat and the risks posed by the dispersal, mixture and recombination of chemicals in the wider environment.

Concurrently, the mechanobiology community has developed tools and methods to show that the dysregulation of biophysical properties and the biochemical mechanisms controlling those properties contribute significantly to many human diseases. Despite these advances, a complete understanding of the connection between biomechanics and disease will require advances in instrumentation that enable parallelized, high throughput assays capable of probing complex signaling pathways, studying biology in physiologically relevant conditions, and capturing specimen and mechanical heterogeneity.

Objective: To evaluate whether there is a relationship between antimicrobial therapy and the development of thrombocytosis.
Data Sources: Literature was accessed through EMBASE (1977-June 2012) and MEDLINE (1977-June 2012) using the terms thrombocytosis and antimicrobial. In addition, reference citations from publications identified were reviewed.
Increasingly, the research community applies magnetophoresis to micro and nanoscale particles for drug delivery applications and the nanoscale rheological characterization of complex biological materials. Of particular interest is the design and transport of these magnetic particles through entangled polymeric fluids commonly found in biological systems. We report the magnetophoretic transport of spherical and rod-shaped particles through viscoelastic, entangled solutions using lambda-phage DNA (λ-DNA) as a model system.

Forces play a key role in a wide range of biological phenomena from single-protein conformational dynamics to transcription and cell division, to name a few. The majority of existing microbiological force application methods can be divided into two categories: those that can apply relatively high forces through the use of a physical connection to a probe and those that apply smaller forces with a detached probe. Existing magnetic manipulators utilizing high fields and high field gradients have been able to reduce this gap in maximum applicable force, but the size of such devices has limited their use in applications where high force and high-numerical-aperture (NA) microscopy must be combined.

Consecutive isolates of Haemophilus influenzae were collected by the Public Health Laboratory, Bath between 1 June 1992 and 31 May 1993. Of 379 apparently distinct isolates, 216 originated from the respiratory tract, 102 from eyes and 61 from other sites. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of amoxycillin, amoxycillin/clavulanate, cefaclor, cefuroxime, cefotaxime and cefpodoxime were determined for each isolate.

Reluctance to use one trolley without patient transfer was probably because of concerns about excessive bacterial contamination of the theatre. In an attempt to see if these concerns were justified, air in the operating theatre was sampled for bacterial content, as were the surfaces and wheels of trolleys and the floor in the theatre, anaesthetic room and at the 'red line' in the transfer zone.
