Article Synopsis
  • There is a critical need for mathematical models to enhance surveillance and management of transboundary pest invasions, specifically targeting desert locusts, which pose a significant threat to smallholder farmers.
  • The proposed integrated modeling framework predicts locust populations by incorporating various life stages and their movement patterns in search of suitable environments for breeding and feeding.
  • This framework combines epidemiological modeling, weather data, and atmospheric transport models, aiming to serve as a practical tool for predicting locust swarm movements during future upsurges.

Article Synopsis
  • Tidal wetlands can absorb greenhouse gases, but methane emissions can vary due to environmental factors and human activities.
  • Land managers require detailed maps of methane properties in these wetlands for effective restoration and greenhouse gas inventories, yet current sampling methods don't align well with broader mapping products.
  • Research involved sampling 27 tidal wetlands, revealing that sulfate concentration is the strongest predictor of methane levels, while salinity also plays a significant role; future studies should focus on understanding local environmental influences on methane variation.

Along the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) coast, natural resource managers continually struggle with managing coastal uplands due to front-end costs, prolonged maintenance, and habitat-specific ecological needs. Prescribed fire, mechanical removal, and chemical treatments are common habitat management techniques used to remove invasive species, clear understory, and achieve other management goals. However, rapid development and changing climate exacerbate the difficulty in using these techniques.

Much uncertainty exists about the vulnerability of valuable tidal marsh ecosystems to relative sea level rise. Previous assessments of resilience to sea level rise, to which marshes can adjust by sediment accretion and elevation gain, revealed contrasting results, depending on contemporary or Holocene geological data. By analyzing globally distributed contemporary data, we found that marsh sediment accretion increases in parity with sea level rise, seemingly confirming previously claimed marsh resilience.

Desert locust outbreak in East Africa is threatening livelihoods, food security, environment, and economic development in the region. The current magnitude of the desert locust invasion in East Africa is unprecedented and has not been witnessed for more than 70 years. Identifying the potential breeding sites of the pest is essential to carry out cost-effective and timely preventive measures before it inflicts significant damage.

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) of Karenia brevis have been documented along coastal waters of every state bordering the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Some Gulf Coast locations, such as Florida and Texas, suffer from recurrent intense and spatially large blooms, while others such as Mississippi seem to rarely observe them. The main objective of this work is to understand the dynamics that led to the K.

Purpose: Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNET) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms with increasing incidence and unpredictable behavior. Whole-exome sequencing has identified recurrent mutations in the genes DAXX and ATRX, which correlate with loss of protein expression and alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT). Both ALT and DAXX/ATRX loss were initially reported to be associated with a favorable prognosis; however, recent studies suggest the contrary.

Previously regarded as a rare neoplasm, the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma has risen rapidly in recent decades. It is often discovered late in the disease process and has a dismal prognosis. Current prognostic markers including clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic findings have limited utility and do not consider the biology of this deadly disease.

Solid-pseudopapillary neoplasms are rare, but are distinctive pancreatic tumors of low-malignant potential. While the histogenesis of these tumors is unclear, they are often associated with gain-of-function mutations in the catenin (cadherin-associated protein), beta 1 (88 kDa), or CTNNB1 gene, resulting in nuclear accumulation of CTNNB1. CTNNB1 is a central component of the Wnt signaling pathway and mediates gene expression through the lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1 (LEF1) /T-cell factor transcription complex.

The BRAF V600E mutation occurs in 15% of colorectal carcinomas (CRCs) and has important genetic, prognostic, and therapeutic implications. A monoclonal antibody (VE1) targeting the BRAF V600E mutant protein has become available with variable efficacy in literature reports. We investigated the utility of the VE1 antibody in detecting BRAF V600E mutant protein in two cohorts: (1) a retrospectively accrued series of 103 resected CRCs with (N = 57) and without (N = 46) known BRAF V600E mutation status by PCR and (2) a prospective series of 25 CRCs requiring BRAF analysis during routine screening for Lynch syndrome.

Adults' level of Eriksonian generativity in midlife has been shown to predict variations in parenting, but there has been less research on its relation to inter generational processes in the three-generational family. As part of a larger study, a sample of 35 Canadian mothers and fathers described a particular, salient child-rearing problem with grandparents when their first-born children were 8 years old. Descriptions were rated for severity of the problem, anger/irritation, optimism about solution, and forgiveness of the grandparent's behavior.

Theory and research suggests that cultural norms for appearance present unrealistic standards of beauty which may contribute to women's body dissatisfaction. In Study 1, women described their appearance more negatively than men and made more upward social comparisons about their bodies, but not about other domains. Women also compared more than men with unrealistic targets (e.
