Calafate is a native barberry of Patagonia, used in culinary and medicinal practices since ancient times. The aim of this work was to analyze the ability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from calafate fruits and flowers, to increase the phenolic compound concentration and antioxidant capacity as well as to inhibit metabolic-related enzymes in fermented calafate juices. The sensory attributes of the selected fermented juice were also analyzed.

The method was downscaled from a 10 ml glass tube to 2 ml microcentrifuge tube format, resulting in a fivefold increase in throughput while concurrently reducing the overall cost and manual labor required for the analysis. Comparison with established colorimetric assays and gas chromatography validates the modified protocol, demonstrating its superior repeatability, rapidity, and simplicity.

Conditioned drug cues can evoke brief drug-like responses. In this report we show that using brief test sessions, contextual cues can induce conditioned hyperlocomotion and ERK responses equivalent to morphine induced responses. Common across countries, the education advantage in total life expectancy is larger for males but the education advantage in (fewer) unhealthy years is larger for females. Counterfactual decompositions show that these results arise because the education advantage in conditional survival rates is relatively more important for males, while the education advantage in better health transitions is relatively more important for females.

Background: Refractory celiac disease type II (RCD-II) is a very rare yet severe complication of celiac disease (CD) with a 50% rate of progression to Enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL). Timely diagnosis and treatment of RCD-II is of the essence and requires the identification of a population of frequently clonal, phenotypically aberrant intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs). Flow Cytometry of intestinal IELs is the recommended method to identify the aberrant surface CD3-negative (sCD3-) intracytoplasmic CD3-positive (icCD3ε+) IELs, and a proportion of >20% is diagnostic of RCD-II.
