Calafate is a native barberry of Patagonia, used in culinary and medicinal practices since ancient times. The aim of this work was to analyze the ability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from calafate fruits and flowers, to increase the phenolic compound concentration and antioxidant capacity as well as to inhibit metabolic-related enzymes in fermented calafate juices. The sensory attributes of the selected fermented juice were also analyzed.

New findings of terrestrial arthropods from the Azorean Islands.

The knowledge on taxonomic diversity of arthropods is key to better understanding the biodiversity patterns and processes and guiding sustainable conservation strategies and practices. In the Azores, terrestrial arthropods are relatively well-inventoried following the publication of comprehensive checklists that have been regularly updated. Nevertheless, every year, new species are found as a result of new arrivals to the Archipelago and from addressing specific taxonomic lacunae.

The biological chemistry of hydrogen sulfide (HS) with physiologically important heme proteins is in the focus of redox biology research. In this study, we investigated the interactions of lactoperoxidase (LPO) with HS in the presence and absence of molecular dioxygen (O) or hydrogen peroxide (HO). Under anaerobic conditions, native LPO forms no heme-HS complex upon sulfide exposure.

Efficient arabinoxylan assay for wheat: Exploring variability and molecular marker associations in Wholemeal and refined flour.

In this study, we present a modified high throughput phloroglucinol colorimetric assay for the quantification of arabinoxylans (AX) in wheat named PentoQuant. The method was downscaled from a 10 ml glass tube to 2 ml microcentrifuge tube format, resulting in a fivefold increase in throughput while concurrently reducing the overall cost and manual labor required for the analysis. Comparison with established colorimetric assays and gas chromatography validates the modified protocol, demonstrating its superior repeatability, rapidity, and simplicity.

Intraepithelial Lymphogram in the Diagnosis of Celiac Disease in Adult Patients: A Validation Cohort.

Background: Celiac disease is a gluten-related pathology, highly prevalent and heterogeneous in its clinical presentation, which leads to delays in diagnosis and misdiagnosis. The analysis of duodenal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) by flow cytometry (lymphogram) is emerging as a discriminative tool in the diagnosis of various forms of celiac disease (CD).

Aims: The aim of this study was to validate IEL lymphogram performance in the largest adult series to our knowledge, in support of its use as a diagnostic tool and as a biomarker of the dynamic celiac process.

Standardised inventories of spiders (Arachnida, Araneae) of Macaronesia III: dry habitats of Cabo Verde Archipelago (São Vicente and Santo Antão).

Background: With this publication, we contribute to the knowledge of the arachnofauna of Cabo Verde, focusing specifically on the Islands of Santo Antão and São Vicente. Data were obtained from samples collected as part of the project "Macaronesian Islands as a testing ground to assess biodiversity drivers at multiple scales" (FCT - MACDIV, 2015-2018). This project aimed to identify the factors influencing community assembly in Macaronesian islands.

Selecting and mating parents in conventional phenotypic and genomic selection are crucial. Plant breeding programs aim to improve the economic value of crops, considering multiple traits simultaneously. When traits are negatively correlated and/or when there are missing records in some traits, selection becomes more complex.

Improving the Diagnosis of Dermatitis Herpetiformis Using the Intraepithelial Lymphogram.

Dermatitis herpetiformis is a cutaneous manifestation of celiac disease. Phenotyping of intraepithelial lymphocytes in the small bowel mucosa can strengthen the diagnosis of celiac disease when it is not clear-cut. We aim to evaluate the usefulness of the intraepithelial lymphogram to confirm dermatitis herpetiformis in equivocal cases.

Disentangling the impact of Atlantic Niño on sea-air CO flux.

Atlantic Niño is a major tropical interannual climate variability mode of the sea surface temperature (SST) that occurs during boreal summer and shares many similarities with the tropical Pacific El Niño. Although the tropical Atlantic is an important source of CO to the atmosphere, the impact of Atlantic Niño on the sea-air CO exchange is not well understood. Here we show that the Atlantic Niño enhances (weakens) CO outgassing in the central (western) tropical Atlantic.

An updated checklist of Azorean arthropods (Arthropoda).

Background: The Azores is a remote oceanic archipelago of nine islands which belongs to the Macaronesia biogeographical region hosting a unique biodiversity. The present Azorean landscape is strongly modified by the presence of man and only in small areas, where the soil or climate was too rough, have primitive conditions remained unchanged. Despite the fact that most of the Azorean native habitats are now lost, a large number of endemic species are still present and need urgent conservation.

Is Cortical Theta-Gamma Phase-Amplitude Coupling Memory-Specific?

One of the proposed neural mechanisms involved in working memory is coupling between the theta phase and gamma amplitude. For example, evidence from intracranial recordings shows that coupling between hippocampal theta and cortical gamma oscillations increases selectively during working memory tasks. Theta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling can also be measured non-invasively through scalp EEG; however, EEG can only assess coupling within cortical areas, and it is not yet clear if this cortical-only coupling is truly memory-specific, or a more general phenomenon.

Impact of Radiation Quality on Microdosimetry and Chromosome Aberrations for High-Energy (>250 MeV/n) Ions.

Studying energy deposition by space radiation at the cellular scale provides insights on health risks to astronauts. Using the Monte Carlo track structure code RITRACKS, and the chromosome aberrations code RITCARD, we performed a modeling study of single-ion energy deposition spectra and chromosome aberrations for high-energy (>250 MeV/n) ion beams with linear energy transfer (LET) varying from 0.22 to 149.

Island hoppers: Integrative taxonomic revision of wolf spiders (Araneae, Lycosidae) endemic to the Madeira islands with description of a new species.

Because of their ability for aerial dispersal using silk and preference for open habitats, many wolf spiders are formidable colonisers. Pioneering arachnologists were already aware of the large and colourful wolf spiders in the Madeira archipelago, currently included in the genus Simon, 1885. The origins were investigated and species boundaries of Madeiran examined by integrating target-gene and morphological information.

Context evoked morphine conditioned effects can be equivalent to morphine induced drug effects in terms of behavioral response and ERK activation in reward associated subcortical brain structures.

Conditioned drug cues can evoke brief drug-like responses. In this report we show that using brief test sessions, contextual cues can induce conditioned hyperlocomotion and ERK responses equivalent to morphine induced responses. To assess acute unconditioned effects, rats that received morphine (MOR-1) or vehicle (VEH-1) were immediately placed onto an arena for a 5-min locomotion recording session after which ERK was measured in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and nucleus accumbens (NAc).

Bayesian multitrait kernel methods improve multienvironment genome-based prediction.

When multitrait data are available, the preferred models are those that are able to account for correlations between phenotypic traits because when the degree of correlation is moderate or large, this increases the genomic prediction accuracy. For this reason, in this article, we explore Bayesian multitrait kernel methods for genomic prediction and we illustrate the power of these models with three-real datasets. The kernels under study were the linear, Gaussian, polynomial, and sigmoid kernels; they were compared with the conventional Ridge regression and GBLUP multitrait models.

Multi-trait genomic-enabled prediction enhances accuracy in multi-year wheat breeding trials.

Implementing genomic-based prediction models in genomic selection requires an understanding of the measures for evaluating prediction accuracy from different models and methods using multi-trait data. In this study, we compared prediction accuracy using six large multi-trait wheat data sets (quality and grain yield). The data were used to predict 1 year (testing) from the previous year (training) to assess prediction accuracy using four different prediction models.

Inequality in life expectancies across Europe and the US.

We use harmonized household panel data from Europe and the US and a three-state survival model to provide comparable measurements of education and gender inequalities in total, healthy, and unhealthy life expectancies at age 50. Common across countries, the education advantage in total life expectancy is larger for males but the education advantage in (fewer) unhealthy years is larger for females. Counterfactual decompositions show that these results arise because the education advantage in conditional survival rates is relatively more important for males, while the education advantage in better health transitions is relatively more important for females.

Gamma delta intraepithelial lymphocytes and coeliac lymphogram in a diagnostic approach to coeliac disease in patients with seronegative villous atrophy.

Background: The causes of seronegative villous atrophy can be grouped as coeliac or noncoeliac related. There is no consensus on how to approach subjects with seronegative coeliac disease.

Aim: To evaluate the accuracy of both an increase in CD3 T-cell receptor gamma delta (TCRγδ ) intraepithelial lymphocytes and coeliac lymphogram for the diagnosis of coeliac disease in patients with seronegative villous atrophy.

The Intracellular Intensity of CD3 on Aberrant Intraepithelial Lymphocytes Is a Prognostic Factor of the Progression to Overt Lymphoma in Refractory Celiac Disease Type II (Pre-Enteropathy-Associated T Cell Lymphoma).

Background: Refractory celiac disease type II (RCD-II) is a very rare yet severe complication of celiac disease (CD) with a 50% rate of progression to Enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL). Timely diagnosis and treatment of RCD-II is of the essence and requires the identification of a population of frequently clonal, phenotypically aberrant intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs). Flow Cytometry of intestinal IELs is the recommended method to identify the aberrant surface CD3-negative (sCD3-) intracytoplasmic CD3-positive (icCD3ε+) IELs, and a proportion of >20% is diagnostic of RCD-II.

Standardised inventories of spiders (Arachnida, Araneae) of Macaronesia II: The native forests and dry habitats of Madeira archipelago (Madeira and Porto Santo islands).

Background: Here we present the data obtained from the samples collected as part of a large research project (MACDIV) which aims at understanding the drivers of spider (Araneae) community assembly in Macaronesian islands. To obtain the data, we applied the sampling protocol COBRA (Conservation Oriented Biodiversity Rapid Assessment), in twelve 50 m x 50 m native forest plots and five dry habitat plots on the island of Madeiraand in 5 dry habitat plots on the island of Porto Santo. Through this publication, we contribute to the knowledge of the arachnofauna of the Madeiran archipelago.

Self-Regulation Mitigates the Association between Household Chaos and Children's Behavior Problems.

Given the potential negative effects that early childhood behavioral problems have on later development, it is important to elucidate risk and protective factors. This study examined household chaos as a predictor of externalizing and internalizing problems among young children from low-income families. Additionally, self-regulation was examined as a moderator of the association between chaos and behavior problems.

Smaller visual arrays are harder to integrate in schizophrenia: Evidence for impaired lateral connections in early vision.

Long-range horizontal connections in early vision undergird a well-studied "collinear facilitation" effect, wherein a central low-contrast target becomes more detectable when flanked by collinear elements. Collinear facilitation is weaker in schizophrenia. Might lateral connections be responsible? To consider the possibility, we had 38 schizophrenia patients and 49 well-matched healthy controls judge the presence of a central low-contrast element flanked by collinear or orthogonal high-contrast elements.
