Although conventional HIV therapy with nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) leads to regression of PAH, highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART; two NRTI plus a protease inhibitor) increases the incidence of HIV-associated PAH as much as twofold.
