Among the most-used fish species in aquaculture is the Nile tilapia, due to its rapid growth rate and its adaptation to a wide range of farming conditions. A careful description of the morphology of the digestive tract, particularly the esophagus and stomach, allows a better understanding of the relationship between structure and function. Cigarette butts (CBs) are the most common litter item on Earth but no long-term studies evaluate their fate and ecological effects. Here, the role of nitrogen (N) availability and microbiome composition on CBs decomposition were investigated by a 5-years experiment carried out without soil, in park grassland and sand dune. Olive mill waste (OMW), a byproduct from the extraction of olive oil, causes serious environmental problems for its disposal, and extensive efforts have been made to find cost-effective solutions for its management. Biochars produced from OMW were applied as soil amendment and found in many cases to successfully increase plant productivity and suppress diseases. This work aims to characterize biochars obtained by pyrolysis of OMW at 300 °C to 1000 °C using 13C NMR spectroscopy, LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy).

Recently it has been stated that antibacterial, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant properties of lactoferrin are increased when this protein is surface-linked to biomimetic hydroxyapatite nanocrystals.

A staining procedure used for simultaneously determining three different fibre types in single sections bovine, porcine or ovine skeletal muscle was modified for use with ostrich skeletal muscle. The muscle fibres of gastrocnemius pars externa, tibialis cranialis caput tibiale, tibialis cranialis caput femorale and fibularis longus tendo caudalis were studied. The histochemical results revealed the presence of three types of fibre only in the gastrocnemius pars externa muscle: fast-twitch glycolytic fibres (FG), fast-twitch oxidative glycolytic fibres (FOG) and slow-twitch oxidative fibres (SO), while in the other muscles the FG fibres were absent.

Three muscles were analyzed, Longissimus dorsi, Semimembranosus and Caput longum Tricipitis brachii taken from nine cow buffaloes, by examining the histochemical and morphometrical characteristics of different muscle fibres types and their distribution inside the examined muscles. Cross sectional area, perimeter, maximum and minimum diameter of about 200 fibres were measured for each muscle, and fast-twitch glycolytic fibres (FG), fast-twitch oxidative-glycolytic fibres (FOG), slow-twitch oxidative fibres (SO) were histochemically differentiated. A mixed culture of fungi, enriched from degraded polymeric materials, formed biofilms on coupons of fiber-reinforced polymeric composites (FRPCs). They grew actively in aqueous extracts of the composites under ambient conditions. The data indicate that the fungi utilized the resins or fiber chemical sizing as carbon and energy sources.

As described in a previous report, a fungal consortium isolated from degraded polymeric materials was capable of growth on presterilized coupons of five composites, resulting in deep penetration into the interior of all materials within five weeks. Data describing the utilization of composite constituents as nutrients for the microflora are described in this article. Increased microbial growth was observed when composite extract was incubated with the fungal inoculum at ambient temperatures.

The lingual and papillary mucosa innervation has been studied in the buffalo by histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques and by gold impregnation method of Ruffini. In lingual mucosa the presence of ganglionic structures has been noticed in which there are numerous cellular bodies and bundles of fibres variously directed. Particularly in the vallate papillae, the papillary stroma contains myelinic and unmyelinated fibres and terminal nerve corpuscles.

Seasonal plasma testosterone and androstenedione levels were determined by radioimmunoassay in the Gentile di Puglia ram. Androstenedione remains steady throughout the years, while testosterone shows seasonal changes. The plasmatic profiles of androgens, estradiol, and progesterone, together with gonads and SSC modifications, have been followed, throughout the post-reproductive period in two Rana esculenta populations, inhabiting, respectively, a mountain pond (Colfiorito) and a sea level lagoon (Lesina). Testosterone and progesterone progressively decrease in the blood until July, while estradiol shows, in both sexes, an increase in the same month. Testosterone depletion accounts for thumb pad atrophy in the male and probably, in both sexes, for the summer interruption of sexual behavior.

The behavior of the ERS was studied in water buffalo of both sexes from one week to nine years of age. A progressive and considerable increase in the values of the ERS, with a respective increase in the animal's age, was noted. Concerning the factors conditioning such peculiarities, the authors attribute importance to the following items: the number of erythrocytes, the plasmatic viscosity, and the total proteinemia (especially in the region of the gamma-globulins that, among those taken in the study, exhibited the greatest variations).

Plasma progesterone levels were determined three days after weaning in 151 sows Landrace x Large White. Furthermore, the influence of bromocriptine (Parlodel, Sandoz) was studied on the resumption of ovarian activity in 19 sows during the hot season. In the male New Zealand rabbit, esterases and phosphatases of several sex accessory organs undergo some modifications at the beginning of the puberal period. The esterases show, by electrofocusing, a certain degree of multiplicity and therefore give rise to different bands whose number and relative activity change in relation to puberty in the epididymis, prostate and prepuce skin. High enzyme multiplicity is also shown by the perineal and the anal glands.
