Fibroblasts cultured from venous ulcers demonstrate phenotypic characteristics of cellular senescence including slow growth, altered morphology, upregulation of fibronectin, and increased senescence-associated beta-galactosidase activity. In senescent cells, arrest of cell replication is related to overexpression of p21 and underexpression of phosphorylated tumor-suppressor protein retinoblastoma (ppRb). The regulatory mechanisms for cell proliferation in venous ulcer fibroblasts are unknown.

Although intravascular ultrasound measurements may be reliable, they require an invasive procedure. Therefore, helical computed tomography (hCT) has become the most commonly used modality for obtaining preprocedure arterial diameter measurements.

bFGF-induced alterations in cellular markers of senescence in growth-rescued fibroblasts from chronic venous ulcer and venous reflux patients.

Fibroblasts cultured from the distal lower extremity of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) patients exhibit characteristics of cellular senescence. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) has been shown to improve growth rates in these fibroblasts. In bFGF-treated fibroblasts, levels of fibronectin and matrix metaloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), known to be up-regulated in senescence, were examined to determine whether bFGF induces changes in these markers of senescence with rescue of cellular proliferation.

Bovine pericardium vs dacron for patch angioplasty after carotid endarterectomy: a prospective randomized study.

Hypothesis: Bovine pericardium (BP) demonstrates improved intraoperative hemostasis and equivalent perioperative morbidity compared with Dacron when used as patch material for angioplasty following carotid endarterectomy.

Objective: To prospectively compare BP and Dacron patch angioplasty after carotid endarterectomy in a randomized fashion.

Introduction: Lower extremity revascularization is indicated for limb salvage and incapacitating leg claudication. Many risk factors (age, hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use, dyslipidemia, etc) have been associated with atherosclerosis and the development of peripheral arterial occlusive disease. However, whether these risk factors or the surgical indication (claudication or limb salvage) influences the extent and location of infrainguinal disease and hence the target artery (distal anastomosis) is unclear.
