Purpose: To describe the application of the light adjustable lens (LAL) using an intrascleral haptic fixation (ISHF) technique for the correction of aphakia and post-operative refractive error.

Observation: The LAL was placed using a modified trocar-based ISHF technique for visual rehabilitation following removal of bilateral cataracts in a patient with ectopia lentis. She ultimately obtained an excellent refractive outcome after adjustment with micro-monovision.

Purpose: To evaluate clinical outcomes 1 year after implantation of an extended depth of focus intraocular lens (IOL) in a large series of patients.

Methods: Outcomes of patients who underwent refractive lens exchange or cataract surgery with the implantation of the AT LARA 829MP IOL (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG) were retrospectively reviewed. The near (40 cm), intermediate (66 cm), and distance visual acuity, refractive outcomes, and cumulative rate of adverse events and secondary procedures were evaluated at 12 months postoperatively.

Fatigue is a well-known hazard in aviation. In military fighter communities, policies have evolved to allow for in-flight use of pharmacological vigilance aids to counteract the negative effects of fatigue. With limited objective evidence supporting the role of these medications in continuous flight operations, the present study seeks to evaluate whether use of modafinil is associated with pilot aircraft carrier landing performance.

Purpose: To provide an initial retrospective evaluation of the effectiveness of a thermal pulsation system to treat intractable patient-reported dye eye symptoms following laser vision correction.

Methods: A total of 109 eyes of 57 patients underwent thermal pulsation therapy (LipiFlow; TearScience, Morrisville, NC) for the treatment of dry eye symptoms following laser vision correction. A standardized dry eye questionnaire, the Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED II), was administered to all patients before and after thermal pulsation therapy.

Background And Purpose: Multidrug resistant (MDR) uropathogens are increasing in prevalence and may contribute to significant morbidity after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). We investigate the presence of MDR bacteriuria and occurrence of postoperative infectious complications in patients who underwent PCNL at our institution.

Methods: Retrospective review was performed of 81 patients undergoing PCNL by a single surgeon (RLS) between 2009 and 2013.

Background: Emerging literature has supported the safety of nonoperative management of uncomplicated appendicitis.

Study Design: Patients with emergent, uncomplicated appendicitis were identified by appropriate ICD-9 diagnosis codes in the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development database from 1997 to 2008. Rates of treatment failure, recurrence, and perforation after nonsurgical management were calculated.

Object: There is limited information on the relationship between patient age and the clinical benefit of resection in patients with glioblastoma. The purpose of this study was to use a population-based database to determine whether patient age influences the frequency that gross-total resection (GTR) is performed, and also whether GTR is associated with survival difference in different age groups.

Methods: The authors identified 20,705 adult patients with glioblastoma in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry (1998-2009).
