Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve numerous physiological adaptations that enable the development and survival of the offspring. A distinct neural plasticity characterizes the female brain during this period, and dynamic structural and functional changes take place that accompany fundamental behavioral adaptations, stimulating the female to progress from an individual with self-directed needs to being responsible for the care of another life. While many animal studies detail these modifications, an emerging body of research reveals the existence of reproduction-related brain plasticity in human mothers too.

Objective: Investigate success rates of cannulating a 'virgin' papilla during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) at a tertiary referral centre; determine reasons for failure and propose learnings for consideration in future revision of success benchmarking.
Design: Review of all ERCPs recorded on Endosoft database from 2006 to 2012 (n=1862). Specifically, 'virgin' papillae, defined as those with no evidence of prior surgical intervention, stents or sphincterotomy (n=947).
The One Health Movement has been a primary advocate for collaboration across disciplinary and organizational sectors in the study of infectious diseases. There is potentially much to be gained by incorporating the interrelations of animal and human ecosystems, as well as the expertise of veterinary, medical, and public health practitioners. Too often, however, the idea rather than the realities of collaboration become valorized within One Health approaches.

Despite the extent of the problem, new drugs for tuberculosis have not been developed for over four decades, largely because tuberculosis occurs primarily among the poor in low-income regions and the market for tuberculosis drugs is not lucrative enough to warrant time and resource commitments by pharmaceutical companies. In the wake of sustained global criticism of pharmaceutical-state practices, however, new partnerships for drug development (PDPs) are forming to address critical shortages of drugs for diseases like tuberculosis that have been termed 'neglected' precisely because they have not seen new treatments for so long.

Yet 20 years into the AIDS epidemic, there is still no vaccine. Based on interviews of AIDS vaccine researchers, watchdog organizations, and ethics groups from the United States, South Africa, and Kenya conducted between August and December of 2003, this paper explores possible answers to the question of why there is no vaccine, looking in particular at contradictions between a biomedical research industry increasingly driven by market incentives and a disease that primarily affects individuals living in low-income countries with little vaccine purchasing power.

Using a sample of 927 cocaine patients enrolled in programs in three modalities included in the national Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Studies (DATOS), this investigation examined the relationship of three dimensions of treatment process on after-treatment cocaine and heavy alcohol use and predatory illegal activity. Logistic regression revealed significant reductions in all three outcomes and strong effects of treatment duration and after-treatment self-help, conditional on the modality. Results did not support the hypothesized relationship between treatment outcomes and amounts of counseling and during-treatment self-help.

This study summarizes historical changes among clients entering drug treatment in their sociodemographic characteristics and important pretreatment behaviors, such as work activity, criminal behavior, drug use, prior drug treatment, and health insurance. Data are drawn from three major studies of drug abuse treatment clients: the Drug Abuse Reporting Program (DARP), 1969-1972; the Treatment Outcome Prospective Study (TOPS), 1979-1981; and the Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Study (DATOS), 1991-1993. The mix of drug treatment clients and their interaction with the drug treatment system changed substantially over the past three decades.

We examined the effect of reversible ischemia on the transcription of prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase (PGHS-1) and c-fos mRNA in rat cerebral cortex. The level of PGHS-1 mRNA climaxed after 30 min of ischemia whereas transcription of c-fos mRNA peaked after 60 min of postischemic reperfusion. We conclude that cerebral ischemia causes early transcription of PGHS-1, without modulation by the c-fos gene or its translated product.
