The switch between planktonic and biofilm lifestyle correlates with intracellular concentration of the second messenger bis-(3'-5')-cyclic dimeric guanosine monophosphate (c-di-GMP). While bacteria possess cyclase and phosphodiesterase enzymes to catalyse formation or hydrolysis of c-di-GMP, both enzymatic domains often occur in a single protein. It is tacitly assumed that one of the two enzymatic activities is dominant, and that additional domains and protein interactions enable responses to environmental conditions and control activity.

Article Synopsis
  • Resistance exercise training (RET) boosts muscle mass and strength, and combining it with protein intake, like dairy milk, can enhance muscle protein synthesis, but dairy isn't suitable for everyone due to allergies and lactose intolerance.
  • This study compared the effects of dairy milk and soy milk on sex hormone levels after RET in six male participants through a double-blinded, randomized crossover method.
  • Results showed no significant differences in hormone levels (testosterone, estrogen, progesterone) between dairy and soy milk, indicating both have similar effects after RET, although more research with larger sample sizes is recommended for confirmation.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a significant public health challenge for which effective lifestyle interventions are needed. A growing body of evidence supports the use of both plant-based eating patterns and early time-restricted eating (eTRE) for the prevention and treatment of T2D, but research has not yet explored the potential of these dietary strategies in combination. In this narrative review, we assessed the evidence by which plant-based diets, in conjunction with eTRE, could support T2D care.

While matched related donor (MRD) allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative option for transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia (TDT), the use of alternative sources has increased, resulting in the exploration of novel transplant-conditioning regimens to reduce the contribution of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and graft failure (GF) to transplant-related morbidity and mortality. Alemtuzumab is a CD52 monoclonal antibody that has been successfully incorporated into myeloablative conditioning regimens for other hematologic conditions, yet there have been limited studies regarding the use of alemtuzumab in HSCT for TDT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate engraftment, incidence of GVHD, and transplant related morbidity and mortality in patients with TDT who received alemtuzumab in addition to standard busulfan-based conditioning.

Aim: Male dietitians are under-represented in the global dietetics workforce, including in Australia. This study explores Australian males' experiences as dietitians in the Australian workforce, with the aim to identify influences that initially attracted them to dietetics, as well as barriers that may affect their decision to stay in or leave the profession.

Methods: A cross-sectional, semi-quantitative web-based survey was distributed to male dietitians using purposive, snowball sampling.

Blinatumomab, a bispecific T cell engager that binds CD19 in leukemic cells and CD3 in cytotoxic T cells and leads to leukemic blast lysis, is often used in pediatric patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) prior to allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT). Concerns about the potential risk of blinatumomab-related immune-mediated toxicities after allo-HCT have not been adequately addressed. These include graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), delayed engraftment, and graft failure or rejection.

Prostate cancer is driven by acquired genetic alterations, including those impacting the epigenetic machinery. With African ancestry as a significant risk factor for aggressive disease, we hypothesize that dysregulation among the roughly 656 epigenetic genes may contribute to prostate cancer health disparities. Investigating prostate tumor genomic data from 109 men of southern African and 56 men of European Australian ancestry, we found that African-derived tumors present with a longer tail of epigenetic driver gene candidates (72 versus 10).

Vegan dietary patterns are increasingly being adopted by endurance athletes, yet research examining the influence of this dietary pattern on exercise-related physiology is limited. This pilot study, therefore, aimed to explore nutrient status, diet quality and cardiovascular and inflammatory responses in aerobically trained adult males following vegan and omnivorous dietary patterns during aerobic exercise. An incremental ramp running test was used to assess peak oxygen consumption (VO ) in males aged 18-55 years, engaging in >4 h training/week.

Introduction: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) significantly reduces the risk of HIV acquisition. However, studies have demonstrated discordance between self-reported measures and biomedical benchmarks of PrEP adherence. We estimated the correlation between self-reported PrEP adherence and PrEP biomarkers and explored factors associated with adherence among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Nigeria.

The most common causes of death in Western countries today are preventable diseases mainly attributed to daily behavior. It has been well documented that genetics are influential but not the deciding factor for developing non-communicable diseases. Ideally, the public should be educated to perform methods of optimal health and wellbeing independently, meaning that individuals should be in control of their health without relying on others.

American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was once the most economically and ecologically important hardwood species in the eastern United States. In the first half of the 20th century, an exotic fungal pathogen-Cryphonectria parasitica-decimated the species, killing billions of chestnut trees. Two approaches to developing blight-resistant American chestnut populations show promise, but both will require introduction of adaptive genomic diversity from wild germplasm to produce diverse, locally adapted restoration populations.

While high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) leads to improved disease-free survival (DFS) for children and adults with relapsed/refractory Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), relapse remains the most frequent cause of mortality post-transplant. Rituximab has been successfully incorporated into regimens for other B-cell lymphomas, yet there have been limited studies of rituximab in HL patients. We hypothesized that adding rituximab to BEAM (carmustine, etoposide, cytarabine, melphalan) conditioning would reduce relapse risk in HL patients post-transplant.
