Article Synopsis
  • Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common issue for surgical patients that can result in cognitive problems, poorer outcomes, and higher healthcare costs, highlighting the need for strategies to reduce its occurrence.
  • Recent studies have investigated various medications, with dexmedetomidine showing the most potential in preventing POD, although its optimal dosing and timing remain unclear; other drugs like acetaminophen and melatonin also need further exploration.
  • Additionally, techniques like reducing anesthetic depth and using regional anesthesia are being considered, but they currently lack enough evidence to make strong recommendations, indicating a need for future research on these intervention strategies.

Introduction: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an important cause of myocardial infarction in patients of younger age without typical atherosclerotic risk factors and can present with ventricular arrhythmia such as ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF). Electrical storm (ES) is defined as greater than or equal to 3 episodes of VT or VF occurring within 24 hours.

Case Report: A healthy 38-year-old-male developed chest pain while exercising at the gym and presented to the emergency department unresponsive in a ventricular arrhythmia defined as ES.

Next-generation sequencing technologies have enabled many advances across diverse areas of biology, with many benefiting from increased sample size. Although the cost of running next-generation sequencing instruments has dropped substantially over time, the cost of sample preparation methods has lagged behind. To counter this, researchers have adapted library miniaturization protocols and large sample pools to maximize the number of samples that can be prepared by a certain amount of reagents and sequenced in a single run.

Venous air emboli have been reported to occur in numerous settings, including trauma, various surgical procedures, both laparoscopic and radiologically, and even idiopathically. In this case study, a liver laceration was made during a robot-assisted left colectomy and colostomy in a 69-year-old female resulting in air embolism during insufflation. A drop in end-tidal CO was noted and the patient went into immediate cardiac arrest.

Addressing burnout through well-being initiatives in anesthesiology residency training has been well described. Our intervention of in-person mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as a means of addressing burnout among anesthesiology trainees proved unfeasible given attitudinal and logistic variables. We subsequently found success with a "confessions session" model structured as a modification of the Delphi method; this led to organizational changes associated with reduced resident burnout and well-being measured through internal (GME) and external (the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)) annual anonymous surveys.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been identified as the leading cause of cervical cancer. While HPV risk factors have been well studied, less is known about those with HPV and their perceptions about health ramifications. The purposes of this study were to examine unmarried college student women's (1) HPV diagnosis status and (2) perceived risk of getting cervical cancer in the next 5 years.

Aim: Ageist views have the potential to deleteriously impact large populations of older adults in the USA and worldwide. The high levels of ageism among young adults might originate from their limited interactions with older adults (individuals aged 65 years and older). The present study examined the factors associated with ageist attitudes among college students.
