Bladder cancer is among the most common form of cancer worldwide and is predicted to increase in incidence and mortality over the next decade. Squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder is a rare histological variant typically associated with schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, a parasitic infection caused by flatworms called schistosomes or blood flukes, and is generally seen in underdeveloped nations. Influenza A virus (FLUAV) infects a wide range of hosts and human-to-swine spillover events are frequently reported. However, only a few of these human viruses have become established in pigs and the host barriers and molecular mechanisms driving adaptation to the swine host remain poorly understood. Cognitive impairment (CI) is an issue that needs to be at the forefront of unmet healthcare needs in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) as it can negatively impact quality of life during long-term care. CI in patients with prostate cancer is thought to be influenced by treatment, androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), and novel androgen receptor (AR) pathway inhibitors in particular; however, current understanding is limited on how treatment affects cognition. We have found that generalizing the definition of allosteric effector to include entire proteins and expanding the meaning of binding site to include the interface of a transcription factor with its DNA to be useful in understanding the modulation of protein activity.

We investigate whether adult marijuana use in Washington responds to increased local access as measured by drive time to the nearest legal marijuana retailer as well as measures of retail density. Using survey data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we find that as retailers open closer to where they live, more individuals use marijuana and more frequently. These effects are concentrated among young adults (ages 18-26), women, and rural residents.
