The atmospheres of gaseous giant exoplanets orbiting close to their parent stars (hot Jupiters) have been probed for nearly two decades. They allow us to investigate the chemical and physical properties of planetary atmospheres under extreme irradiation conditions. Previous observations of hot Jupiters as they transit in front of their host stars have revealed the frequent presence of water vapour and carbon monoxide in their atmospheres; this has been studied in terms of scaled solar composition under the usual assumption of chemical equilibrium.

Material And Methods: Two-hundred-sixteen consecutive patients (150 males and 66 females) who underwent AVS+AAR from June 2009 to April 2018 at a single center were retrospectively analyzed.
Heart rate variability (HRV) refers to the variations between consecutive heartbeats, which depend on the continuous modulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system. HRV has been shown to be effective as a predictor of risk after myocardial infarction and an early warning sign of diabetic neuropathy, and in the cardiology setting is now recognized to be a useful tool for risk-stratification after hospital admission and after discharge. Recent evidences suggest that HRV analysis might predict complications even in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, and the present review summarizes the importance of HRV analysis in adult cardiac surgery and the perspectives for HRV use in current clinical practice.

Cardiotoxicity is determined by cardiac exposure to anthracyclines and to more toxic secondary alcohol metabolites that are formed inside cardiomyocytes or diffuse from the bloodstream. Concerns exist that HF might be caused by cumulative anthracycline doses that were thought to be safe.

However, recent reports from the cerebrovascular and pharmacological literature are insinuating concerns about a potential increase in the haemorrhagic risk among statin users. The effect of statins in postoperative bleeding should be carefully investigated in major cardiac surgery that exposes per se to risk of bleeding.

Lowering the cumulative dose of DOX proved useful to minimize HF risk, and, yet, there is a growing concern that HF might occur after doses that were thought to be safe. Clinical trials that prospectively address such concerns are lacking.

Objectives: This study sought to investigate the benefit of papillary muscle surgery on long-term clinical outcomes of patients with ischemic MR.
Antitumor drugs have long been known to introduce a measurable risk of cardiovascular events. Cardio-Oncology is the discipline that builds on collaboration between cardiologists and oncologists and aims at screening, preventing or minimizing such a risk. Overt concern about "possible" cardiovascular toxicity might expose cancer patients to the risk of tumor undertreatment and poor oncologic outcome.

This heterogeneity causes a low success rate of single procedures of ablation and a high incidence of recurrence. Surgical ablation through bilateral thoracotomy demonstrates better results after a single procedure.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of atrial natriuretic peptide on ischemic myocardium through the induction of heat-shock protein 72.
Methods: 30 isolated rabbit hearts perfused on isolated heart apparatus were randomly assigned to receive either warm Krebs-Henseleit solution with 1 µmol L(-1) atrial natriuretic peptide (n = 15) or warm Krebs-Henseleit solution without atrial natriuretic peptide (n = 15) in preischemic, ischemic, and postischemic conditions. In all rabbit hearts, global ischemia was produced by clamping the aortic and atrial inflow lines.

Background: use of a prosthetic ring is an integral part of any mitral valve repair and can influence the long-term stability of the results. We evaluated the long-term results of the AnnuloFlex ring implanted as an open flexible band in patients affected by degenerative mitral disease.
Methods: between 2001 and 2010, 82 patients (52 women, 30 men) with a mean age of 62 years, underwent repair of a prolapsing mitral valve with an AnnuloFlex band.
Background: Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) and its receptors (RAGEs) are heterogeneous signaling proteins associated to diabetes and responsible of endothelial alterations leading to atherosclerosis progression and graft failure. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of statin in reducing AGEs related endothelial damage.
Methods: Endothelial cell(EC) obtained from leftovers of saphenous vein grafts of non-diabetic patients were incubated with AGEs (2 and 20 μM) and subsequently treated with Simvastatin.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) remains the main predictor of restenosis rates and cardiovascular events following successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) despite the use of drug-eluting stents (DES). HbA1c <6.0% is considered an index of optimized metabolic control in patients with DM, but several studies are downsizing its role in the clinical management of these patients.

Cardiotoxicity may first manifest during salvage therapy with other drugs, such as the anthracenedione mitoxantrone.

In vitro electrostimulation of non-stem and stem cells induces myogenic predifferentiation and may be a powerful tool to generate cells with the capacity to respond to local areas of injury. We evaluated the effects of in vivo electrostimulation on infarcted myocardium using a miniaturized multiparameter implantable stimulator in rats.

Clinical care of this complication impacts heavily on health-care costs, length of hospital stay, and the time to full recovery and return to regular work activity. There are various surgical approaches to sternal resynthesis, but they are often unsuccessful.

We reported that in an ex vivo human myocardial strip model, 3 or 10 μM amrubicin [(7S,9S)-9-acetyl-9-amino-7-[(2-deoxy-β-D-erythro-pentopyranosyl)oxy]-7,8,9,10-tetrahydro-6,11-dihydroxy-5,12-napthacenedione hydrochloride] accumulated to a lower level compared with equimolar doxorubicin or epirubicin (J Pharmacol Exp Ther 341:464-473, 2012). We have characterized how amrubicin converted to ROS or secondary alcohol metabolite in comparison with doxorubicin (that formed both toxic species) or epirubicin (that lacked ROS formation and showed an impaired conversion to alcohol metabolite).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAntitumor anthracyclines such as doxorubicin and epirubicin are known to cause cardiotoxicity that correlates with anthracycline accumulation in the heart. The anthracycline amrubicin [(7S,9S)-9-acetyl-9-amino-7-[(2-deoxy-β-d-erythro-pentopyranosyl)oxy]-7,8,9,10-tetrahydro-6,11-dihydroxy-5,12-napthacenedione hydrochloride] has not shown cardiotoxicity in laboratory animals or patients in approved or investigational settings; therefore, we conducted preclinical work to characterize whether amrubicin attained lower levels than doxorubicin or epirubicin in the heart. Anthracyclines were evaluated in ex vivo human myocardial strips incubated in plasma to which anthracycline concentrations of 3 or 10 μM were added.

Previous studies have evaluated the effect of ECC on inner ear with contrasting results. The aim of this study is to evaluate possible modifications of the outer hair cells (OHC) function after open heart surgery (OHS) under ECC with transient evoked (TEOAEs) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs).
